Agreed with everything you said and he made them relevant, again. But...a statue for that? It's not like Bill Snyder in his remaking of KState. Absolutely no one gave a shit about KSU before Snyder.

OSU won a NC in the 40s with Lookabaugh. I don't believe OSU has anything to honor him. It'd be pretty stupid to give Gundy a statue for 1 Conf Championship and forget the guy who gave them a NC.

National Championships awarded 71 years later aren't really National Championships.

A statue for winning the B12 once? That's an awful low bar to be given a statue. But it is OSU. Maybe that's the highest mountain they'll ever climb.

Gundy would have to pay for it!

The bagman game was so much easier and cheaper in the 80's. We're not gonna see Thurman Thomas or Hart Lee Dykes around Stillwater for the foreseeable future. They've gotta develop 3-stars like they've been doing or find late bloomers, diamonds in the rough types from FCS and lower programs.

IMO, it's gonna take a high-energy young guy. Gundy was great for OSU, but he lost his edge the past couple of years. This NIL era apparently soured him on recruiting.

When OU and Texas left the conference without OSU and the portal NIL stuff opened up, Gundy knew he/they were screwed….he didn’t embrace it, he wilted.

Again, the statue won't represent achievement as much as it will be a symbolic gesture & reminder of their halcyon days. A decade from now they'll use it as part of a fundraising drive. There will be plenty of former students from those days that will fondly remember winning seasons & bowl game upsets (beating Andrew Luck's Stanford team has to be a highlight) that the admin will be keen to get on board.

Maybe he was giant asshole because he was tired of hearing about how he needed to recruit better without any funding.  The son of a bitch can coach.  He started the season 2-2 with a loss to South Alabama the year they met us in the CCG.

In the end, oSu--like every other school--will use their own criteria to justify Coach I'mAMan's being "deserving" of a statue. The admin and alumni may look on it as a deserving tribute and a source of pride, and those on the outside may laugh and scoff at their low standards. It's their money.

The outside seems badass but it’s going to be expensive to replace all that awful taste on the inside. It almost perfectly represents Gundy

aggy and tech are prime examples of shit institutions incentivizing players to locate to shitholes to play football. OSU collectively needs to start searching for coins in between sofa cushions.

Not a lot of hurricane relief funds to steal in Oklahoma.

OSU did not win a NC in 1945. They did not. This was your 1945 NC:

 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1945_Army_Cadets_football_team

Army was an all star team (literally, players were snatched from other squads, like freshman AA Bill Yeiman plucked from the Ags). Army had two Heisman winners. They shut out five opponents, two of whom were ranked in the top 10. Army was undefeated 1944-1946. Army received every single #1 vote in the final AP poll. It may be the most dominant team in a season, ever.

OSU finished #5, really good for a MVAC team. They may claim a MNC, but no rational person acknowledges it.

True, anyone who knows any history of the game considers Army has the hands down NC that year.  But okie state must still have a little aggy in them.

Gundy had been butting heads with insiders for years. It was somewhat public that he and Mike Holder did not get along and that he was not friendly with Boone Pickens in his later years. Rumors have swirled for years that he had lost the trust of some of the regents and some of the donors. After last season there was a regents meeting where Weiburg and then President Shrum clearly took up for him and left the meeting looking despondent despite saving his job. More rumors came out that he was not getting along with even his own coaching staff.

Do you know what the butting heads centered on?  I've read that Gundy's issue was that OK ST was way behind on NIL and spent a lot less than most P4 teams. Not sure if they are way behind?

I find it hard to believe he's lying about it, though. Based on the product on the field, I would agree. The athletes look outclassed the last year.

If the lack of spending is true, its hilarious (to me) to expect the same kind of results from your coach and staff as you've had in the past. Firing him isn't gonna solve that. But hey, this just an outsider viewpoint. I don't claim to know real details on the matter.

After last season there was a regents meeting where Weiburg and then President Shrum clearly took up for him and left the meeting looking despondent despite saving his job. More rumors came out that he was not getting along with even his own coaching staff. The last two abortions of games were clearly the last straw with the remaining regents and donors. Basically, it sounds like he's been sort of an ass behind closed doors for years and winning is what kept his job. The results the last two years have not been bad, they've been attrocious, completely noncompetitive. It was time to move forward with there no longer being a rift of Gundy supporters and detractors. Even those who still like him know it's time for a change. Hopefully we can start anew this offseason with everyone on the same page including the donors.

And now reading the whole thing...

The real kicker about the Portal and NIL is that a certain coaching style, where you're a complete dickhead to your athletes, "And you'll do as I say because I control your future hopes and dreams," is no longer viable.

It's why Urban Meyer has no chance of succeeding now. Total asshole.

AD Weiberg made clear we have the financial support to compete and I believe him. Mike had pissed off donors over many years, in part by refusing to meet with them (sorry coach but ass kissing for money is part of the job) and was just disagreeable to a lot of other people including regents and even his own coaching staff. Nobody will say it out loud but the impresssion I get is that we have donors willing to support NIL but not for Mike who only ever bitched about the new system. Saying that complaining fans were poor and stupid last year was probably the last straw (well second to last, being completely uncompetetive and losing to Tulsa was obviously the last straw). We'll see what financial support is available with the new coach. I don't see us being uniquely poorer in this new landscape than our Big 12 peers (Tech being the exception with Campbell). Like I said, we'll see.

I never saw it if was confirmed, but it went around that Spencer Sanders wanted to return when he wasn't getting the attention he thought he would in the portal and Mike refused. I get the sentiment, but that's just not how it works anymore. I said it before, as I fan I can complain about missing the old days, but we need a coach who embraces this stuff, is fine if players test the waters, and who will either welcome them back if they want to return, or genuinely wish them well if they leave. The players have way more power these days and as much as I hate the ramifications for mid-tier programs like OSU, I can't really find a problem with the players who are the ones putting their bodies and brains on the line for the product having more power.

That is the house BO&W would build if he won the powerball, right down to the 2-pac poster over his bunk beds.

Absolutely not! That interior is hideous. I’m more of a Victorian exterior with modern minimalist interior.
