Most times you do not need a lawyer.  Just show up.  If the cop does not show, which happens maybe 30 percent of the time, it will get dismissed.  If he does show up, just cut a deal with the prosecutor for deferred.

Whatever you spend on a lawyer is usually a waste unless they can get it dismissed.  Even then you're probably breaking even as the spend on attorney will be similar to the cost of deferred.

I don't show up.  I just call the prosecutor and ask for deferred over phone.  Usually works.  I don't want to go down to court for a traffic ticket unless I have to.

I caught an 84 in a 70 last week. Thanks Dinwiddie County, Virginia.

I got pulled over south of San Marcos by DPS for 84 in a 70 on the way to the Alamodome to watch the All-American game with Ryan Perrilloux, Mark Sanchez, Desean Jackson, etc.

Trooper let me go with a warning. Really didn’t even tell me to slow down. Nice guy. That almost never happens to me, though.

Unfortunately radar detectors are illegal in DC and Virginia. But they are legal in Texas. Thank goodness!

I know Matt Davis well.  When I was a baby lawyer my firm lent out associates to muni court to prosecute traffic citations to give us trial experience.  He wrote thousands of BS tickets per year and he and his buddies were scamming taxpayers with overtime.  I wrote about it at the time on Hornfans.

He and his buddy would write a massive amount of tickets at speed traps.  Often putting each other as witnesses.  So they would be called to court multiple times per week.  They would sign in at 8 am when court started in multiple courts.  Then give the bailiff there phone numbers.  So they would be earning OT pay starting at 8 am.  Then they would disappear to go work side security jobs, and when we would try and call them as a witness the bailiff would say they were unavailable or in another court.  In the off chance we could get them to show up, they would say they needed their other cop buddy listed on the ticket as a witness to make the case.  They would never be available.  So we would end up having to dismiss all their tickets.  These guys were fleecing the city for hundreds of thousands of dollars in OT.  Everyone in the court knew exactly what these assholes were doing.  One assistant DA reported them.  Matt Davis stalked the assistant DA and found out where he drank.  Gave him a DWI charge in retaliation. That scared most off.

It was Davis, an asian cop I cannot remember his name, and another cop named Running.  The Chronicle finally reported on them and noted they had fleeced the city out of a million in OT.  It was more than that.  Davis was writing about 10,000 tickets per month.  So many of us probably were ticketed by him.  He pulled me over on Allen Parkway once with a line of other cars with his buddies.  I was not even speeding.  You can recognize the prick because he always wore Oakley sunglasses.

Small world, my firm did the same thing. My stint was back in 2013.

It was a shock how little the actual law mattered in those trials.

Busted for a pipe, an ounce and a half of weed, and.......holding his phone?

That last bit seems odd.

Studies are routinely showing that using your phone in your hand while driving impairs your ability to drive as much as being intoxicated, so many states are passing laws making it illegal to hold your phone at any point while driving.

Now, I know some Surlyites are miffed that DUI is even a thing, but some of us are trying to drive around with kids in the car and appreciate this sort of thing.

Latest on Top247 edge Jake Kreul, as he continues to weigh each of his three finalists (Tom Loy writes an article saying nothing)

Quote

Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy Top247 edge rusher Jake Kreul continues to weigh his options, as he inches toward a final decision. The 6-3, 230-pounder is strongly considering Texas, Oklahoma, and Ole Miss down the stretch. Regarding a commitment, look for one to come before the start of his senior season.

Kreul is one of the top-ranked prospects in the class of 2026. 247Sports has him slotted as the No. 61 overall player in the country, No. 8 edge rusher nationally, and No. 7 recruit in Florida.

So, where will he end up? 247Sports has the latest.

For quite some time, the expectation was that Oklahoma was set to land Kreul. However, Texas has been surging in his recruitment and has made this a tight race. All the while, Ole Miss has been lurking in the background, making a big move.

For Texas, the Longhorns have a lot working in their favor. They, from what I've gathered, are why he remains uncommitted right now. The staff has turned up the heat, and that has really grabbed Kreul's attention. They have been relentless in their pursuit and have the entire staff recruiting him. In addition, they have development on their side. They have a great plan in place for him to come to Austin, learn from likely future first-round pick Colin Simmons, and then take over after that.

For Oklahoma, there is a lot to like about the Sooners. The fact that they have a defensive head coach in Brent Venables is a big plus. The overall defensive style and structure fits what Kreul is looking for. In addition, he has great, long-term relationships on staff and he gets along with the current players, current commits, and entire coaching staff.

For Ole Miss, it's clear that the Rebels are a serious player. Defensive coordinator Pete Golding is a big factor behind Kreul's interest in the program. The two have a close relationship and Golding's plan for Kreul has him fired up about a potential future in Oxford. In addition, Kreul is a big fan of defensive line coach Randall Joyner. Kreul believes he's "elite" when it comes to player development. In addition, he likes how head coach Lane Kiffin runs his program.

The smart money is still on the Sooners due to his ties to the program. However, the surge by the Longhorns is surely something to track. There are some people connected here who believe Texas is now the team to beat. It'll be an interesting next couple of weeks for the elite pass rusher.

Regarding a potential commitment date, IMG Academy is hosting a media day on August 2. There is a possibility that Kreul joins a few others and announces them. However, that's just speculation. Nothing is set at this time per Kreul.

I remember.

Would hate to see that happen to any of you wonderful humans, whom I hold the utmost admiration for (suppose there are a few exceptions)

so please, buckle up. Slow down. And keep thinking about how much muledick, dickbutt, and Helo’s inane posts you would miss out on if you burned or were crushed to death in an auto accident.
