Isn’t porn illegal for children under 18 already? Look. We agree- it’s harmful to kids and there’s a law against it.

This new law won’t achieve your stated policy goal, so I’m baffled why you’re defending it.

It’s obviously the digital nature of all of this that is the problem.

This law does nothing to address the thing you think is a problem. That’s his point.

That's the thing - it would be far more useful to do a huge PSA blitz, ala "Don't Mess with Texas" for parents, mentioning the child safety features already built into tablets and smartphones.  I keep hearing how parents don't know how, they are too tired to figure out their tablets or don't know much.

Well fuck it, put a measure on the next ballot saying "do you support the state spending $100 million to educate parents about child safety controls on the internet?" and a lot of us would vote for it.  I can tell you that none of us voted for any measures about trying to restrict access to legal materials by law-abiding adults.

The fact that these websites have to display warnings about pornography from the Texas Health and Human Services Department or whatever, aimed at adults, makes this far less about children, and far more about a trial balloon demonizing/restricting something.

Personally, I’m much more concerned that my kids will watch porn and get the wrong idea on what it’s actually like for ‘most’ people, most of the time.

Reading stuff like r/relationship_advice, too many dudes out there think all ladies want to be instantly jack hammered…maybe after he rubs their clit like he’s trying to start a fire in the outback.

They’re missing the context of build up or realistic expectations

I feel bad for all the men who don't have a 9 inch or bigger penis and can stay hard for hours. Porn must make them feel a bit bad about themselves. That must really suck.

Yeah....must suck for them.  Right fellas?  "Them?"  Not us.  Definitely not us.  And our supermodel wives.

Must be lucky for you guys.  Years of therapy has helped to cope with a medium-sized 7.5".  I should clarify, the therapy hasn't helped me to cope with hit, but it's helped my wife.

I'm just hoping she doesn't leave me some day, because then I might marry again and one day my son might come home from college and find his hot step-mom stuck in the dryer or under the kitchen sink, and then he loses his virginity and makes the decision to drop out of school and become a plumber or appliance repairman.

This is 100% the play.  The groups backing this legislation haven't been shy about saying so, either.  Anything "icky" to conservative Christofascist views (read: drag shows, anything remotely gay) will be branded "perverted" and will be blocked without ID and layers of warnings to protect the citizens from being "warped by these perverted views."

Today, they're coming for the videos and discussions of women getting stuck in the dryer and then nailed from behind (I truly don't understand how that became a "genre" of porn, but hey...whatever floats your boat), tomorrow, they're coming for your other "perverted ideas and content," like, oh, I don't know, pictures of black people and white people holding hands (see the recent comments of a Conroe ISD board member complaining about EXACTLY THAT).

What you posted is a real thing, worthy of real concern.  Amped up pornographic sexual encounters on screen gives young people a warped idea of 1) what human beauty/attractiveness really is, 2) how mutually satisfying sexual encounters should go, etc.  Hell, I've seen in on this board -- the expectations and "standards" for sexual attractiveness and sexual behavior by younger posters are wildly unrealistic.  Men are setting themselves up for disappointment, and women are doomed to unsatisfying relationships and/or pointless rejection because "she's not a 10, she's a hag."

All those things are real social problems.  And not a SINGLE ONE OF THOSE PROBLEMS is something I trust the Christofascists to help us handle.  Not a one.

You can bet your ass that SCOTUS will say it's totally fine for Texas to require the icky businesses to post warnings about the harm viewing their content can cause, even though they recently ruled that California couldn't make crisis pregnancy centers post notices informing the patients they were conning that abortions were available elsewhere.

Well, when you see one of the screens below (substitute "Texas" for "Louisiana") as example sites, and the part about "Prepare a device with a camera to start age estimation", make sure and look your best for some third-party service when you show your face on camera, and you show your ID and/or some other documents (mortgage, pay stub, etc.), because one of these days, it'll leak onto the internet, and you'll want a great photo for all of your family/friends/employers who come across your porn verification information.

Or you can verify through the State of Texas digital ID system (I assume you put in your driver's license information and maybe it passes you to a third party for a camera verification) and it approves you to access the site, while also supposedly not recording that you are accessing porn sites, and I'm sure that will also never leak onto the internet, or that nobody from the State of Texas will start making up a list of Texans who are accessing porn, and want to dig deeper or make it a part of the public record in some way.

Or read this article and pay attention to the part about VPNs:

https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/how-to-watch-porn-safely

Example screens the non-VPN users will start seeing:

You're not in the CR, so determine if the poster is writing in good faith and respond in kind, rather than assuming negative and false motives. I'm not a Republican and I don't care about your or anyone else's records. I'm a marriage and family therapist with a PhD in a related field and a decade of counseling experience. I've seen how porn can totally transform children and teens and I think it's worth addressing. The research indicates the same.

I'm sure all of that is true and the law is clearly not well thought out. It doesn't follow that the issue doesn't exist, shouldn't be addressed, or can't be addressed through policy.

Agreed. We have lots of problems. That doesn't mean we shouldn't do anything about this one while we wait for the state of our politics to change. In fact, working together to get something done could help create an environment where working on larger issues is feasible. Ignore the quote box below.

I agree that porn and youngsters is problematic.  He also said this probably isn't the best way to go about it.  It's a tough problem.  How much it should be attracting legislative attention is another issue and I absolutely agree that this is a smokescreen for something else entirely.

You’re old, retired, not interested in political/public life and don’t give a shit who knows what you do.

That’s it. That’s all who should “trust” it because nothing to lose. But there wil be others…pussy/undefeated

It’s the ultimate in fucking around and finding out when the services are hacked and your info is out there like the Ashley Maddison stuff.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashley_Madison_data_breach

Quote

In July 2015, an unknown person or group calling itself "The Impact Team" announced they had stolen the user data of Ashley Madison, a commercial website billed as enabling extramarital affairs. The hacker(s) copied personal information about the site's user base and threatened to release users' names and personally identifying information if Ashley Madison would not immediately shut down. As evidence of the seriousness of the threat, the personal information about more than 2,500 users was initially released. The company initially denied that their records were insecure, and continued to operate.

Quote

Because of the site's lack of adequate security and practice of not deleting users' personal information from its database – including real names, home addresses, search history and credit card transaction records – many users feared being publicly shamed. Their fears proved well founded.

On 18 and 20 August, more than 60 gigabytes of company data was publicly released, including user details. The released data even included personal information about users who had paid the site to delete their personal information, since the company had not deleted the data that they claimed to have erased.

No, "whatever floats your boat" is a totally different genre. That's where the woman is leaning over to fix a... well, I don't want to ruin the surprise, but it definitely involves lines about seamen and buoys.

I mean there are adults that give their cc info to porn sites.

That's one I never understood.  Are the pay tites better than the free tites?

My BiL got busted with a credit card he had separate for the paytities - except the bill came to his house.  Of course, he got busted by SiL and all sorts of shit rained down on him.  I haven't yet got up the gumption to ask him if it was worth it.

I don’t understand this. I mean, I have looked at a TON of internet porn. Maybe more than I should. This goes back to downloading pics off BBSs in the early 90s. But I never, ever, ever have considered paying for it, let alone comfortable enough to give some shady site my info. All that shit those weirdos pay for can be found for free.

Either you don't understand how "in-law" terminology works in relation to you (which is fine, took me awhile too).  Or you're describing some new genre of post-September 1st porn where everybody is an in-law no matter the legal definition; and some are frequently getting stuck in mailboxes and anal-gone-awry is involved.  And then we work in "gumption" somehow.

queue up the "It's real to me, dammit!" meme.

I guess I need to find a good scene to watch before midnight.  Or can I have an extra hour if I fly to El Paso?

noCR, but I'm just proud to live in a state that protects the children.  No porn, no books, no critical thinking, no preschool, no nutritious lunches, no proper delivery of American history.  But goddammit, our schools can still have all the guns, mandated prayer, and child-molesting coaches and youth ministers we can possibly fit onto a single campus.  Tomorrow is a great day for Texas !!!!!!

If you're not already filming a "I'm with Google, I'm here to fix your GoogleFi/VPN issue."  And the woman replies, "But we don't have Google Fiber" and sexualness ensues, you're already losing money.  We're three scenes in this morning and doing fantastic.
