https://www.pff.com/news/college-football-top-10-returning-edge-defenders-for-the-2025-season

1. Colin Simmons, Texas

Simmons entered college with a ton of hype as a top-15 overall recruit and has somehow already exceeded expectations. The Texas native was the sixth-most-valuable edge defender in the nation according to PFF’s wins above-average metric. He trailed only Abdul Carter, Jack Sawyer, Mike Green, Josaiah Stewart and JT Tuimoloau in that metric. Simmons ended up winning the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award, which is given to the best true freshman in America.

His 18.6% pressure rate was a top-15 mark in the nation, and he was no slouch as a run-defender either, posting a 73.4 run-defense grade. Simmons’ elite combination of bend and advanced pass-rushing moves is reminiscent of Von Miller

Wait so the top 6 guys in this metric were:

  1. 3rd overall pick
  2. 4th round pick
  3. 2nd round pick
  4. 3rd round pick
  5. 2nd round pick
  6. a true freshman

Seems good

Didn’t Big Noon go to a CU game in 23 that didn’t air on Fox?

You appear to be correct. That appears to be the only time they went to a game that aired on ESPN. They were supposed to go to Illinois and made a last minute switch to stay in Boulder and take advantage of the Deon hype. Apparently they have also televised one game that aired on NBC (at Notre Dame).

Can we please never mention this dipshit again?

At least DCTF waited to put our coach on the cover again after he made a couple of playoff semifinals appearances.

Although no one but the die hards here remember that nonsense from 2017.

In the end, Fred Akers was more hated.

No one put "FIRE TOM" in white shoe polish on the backs of their orange jackets while in the stands at DKRTMS.

Many people put "FIRE FRED" on the backs of their jackets at TMS back then. I saw them at every home game.

Time had a lot to do with it. Schools were much more patient back then - Akers was given 10 years. If Herman had been around for 10 years, there would have been a squadron of planes overhead at every game pulling FIRE TOM banners.

To be fair Akers was playing for a national championship in his 7th year, but once the freedom bowl happened the next year he had a very short leash.  I think the reason for the disparity in fan vitriol between the 2 is because in 1986 we had pretty much kicked ass the previous 30 years so fans weren't used to losing.  Turtle had the benefit of lazy years Mack and strong.

better than this

Tom Herman Is the 2017 Cover Boy of Dave Campbell's Texas Football

Can you imagine time traveling back to this on the Shag and telling the board that this dipshit gets canned and we hire the dude that USC just fired for being a drunk? Also I would absolutely want to time travel back in time and post the all the  2024 results and 2025 preseason predictions on Texags.

Also that Texas would join the SEC. That would shock a lot of people back in the day

They used him for the donor parts to put Baxter back together.

I think you just hit on a really, really good premise for a sports movie set in a dystopian future.

That’s why we need it to up to 105 on the roster. The extra 20 players are just spare parts

Or, you could find the almost 50 year old movie Coma streaming somewhere

Haha, saw that, and also, more recently, The Island, starring Ewan Mcgregor and Scarlett Johansson, where rich people have identical clones of themselves produced to harvest organs when needed. There are no new ideas under the sun. I just think the idea of top-level athletes getting body parts replaced gives it an interesting angle.

Isn’t there a movie about that? Parents have a daughter that’s sick and decide to have another for parts basically.

That happened in real life. As for literature, movies, TV anthologies/sci-fi, it’s a well-worn trope.

That would shock me less than going back and telling my past self how much in favor of it I would be.

I had people around me campaigning to join the SEC long before A&M did. I loathed the idea at the time. I mean, I still don't like it, but I understand it was absolutely the best decision.

Same. I like that we didn't adopt the SEC! SEC! bullshit one bit. "We're just here to fuck shit up."

My Sister’s Keeper

The pre-prom scene, in an otherwise very mediocre movie, is both gutwrenching and terrific.

As I was raising my oldest daughter, I think I saw every romcom and chick flick that was created in a decade spanning 2000-2009/2010. Yikes.

Wait what? I thought we had a weak schedule...you know outside of Road games at the Shoe and Georgia...I guess the Swamp too.  But luckily we get them Fighting Texum Ags in Austin...would be worried otherwise.

Yeah, I thought that was the name but wasn’t sure.

IT stuff:

CJ Baxter returned this week, including working 7 on 7—That seemed worthy of its own board note given the precariousness of his injury and uncertainty of his timeline to return, at least as far as his timeline to return to form. Returning to work this week is a good sign he’ll be able to hit August running. Now he has six weeks to knock off some understandable rust.

Tangential to this note, Derek Williams looked better this week than last week after returning from his own knee injury.

Travis Shaw carrying his weight well during workouts—A source said the big senior transfer is moving quite well, even in the heat. If Texas can get 75% of T’Vondre Sweat, Shaw will have been a big addition. Good news, he’s capable of more. Contract year. Shaw was one of the first players mentioned overall.

Matthew Caldwell—It’s quite evident the new QB is mature on and off the field. He impressed this week with his decision-making in 7 on 7, especially given how new he is to the team and playbook. He wasn’t always careful with the ball at Troy. In any event, he’s off to a good start and seems like he can provide what Sark is looking for. (Encouragingly, Caldwell wasn’t specifically asked about. A source said all the QB’s looked good and then went on a Caldwell tangent)

Ryan Niblett living up to his number—He wears No. 21 and that’s what he looks like he’s going to be, a weapon in 21-personnel (two running backs, one tight end). That means screens, check downs, sweeps, and motions. Already the fastest player on the team, he looks the fastest he’s ever been on campus.

Speaking of fast—Trevor Goosby didn’t run 21 MPH but that report gave the program a good laugh. I didn’t even check on that specifically, I just jokingly asked if Niblett was faster than Goosby and the source chuckled and threw cold water on it.

Can he duplicate Matthew Golden’s year?—Deandre Moore looks “exceptional,” per a source. I’ve heard superlatives in the past for Moore but that’s the first time that word was used. Then the sourced added Daylan McCutcheon put together another strong week.

IT asked about Jaime Ffrench and Kaliq Lockett—McCutcheon’s fellow freshmen were asked about this past week in the Q&A. We asked specifically about those two and heard, “Doing well. They’ve improved since the spring.”

A new leader emerging?—Cal transfer tight end Jack Endries is showing good early leadership qualities. He’s also impressing on the field. It sounds like he’s fitting in very nicely. That room is young and in need of a leader.

Putting it all together—Anthony Hill is much better in coverage in 7 on 7 this year than he was last year.

I can envision the pitch to walk-ons:

”you might not see the field, but your ACL might in the knee of the first string RB”

I appreciate the effort to post this, but will make the following public service announcement about these kind of IT updates:

We have busted the liars at IT making shit up repeatedly for more than a decade. Nahlin leads the charge in creating information when there isn't really much in truth to report. They're clearly lying, such as in this report, when they mention that they didn't even bring something up, but the source just came up and said something that fits into the narrative they've been weaving in other posts.

All these guys except Wisky have to play us; that's why their schedules are so damn hard.

Or they're all SEC schools except Wisconsin who plays Alabama in non conference and both OSU and Oregon.

This is also why I'm mostly in favor of dropping the big name OOC game, or at least only doing it once every 3 or 4 years or so. Our SEC schedule will be tough enough to clear strength of schedule questions, and we could use 4 games to play the freshman and backups while keeping the main rotation fresher for conference.
