I run a data center program for electronic security and telecommunications installations.  These are not small projects.

We've been told that we will see 8-15% price escalations on devices and materials across the board this month.

Makes it difficult to put a number on a job that won't start for at least 6-12 months for us.  Pricing will become a constant negotiation even after projects are awarded.

starting to see this somewhat on my builds. gonna make for some hard conversations if this shit keeps up

Not that hard to me. It's pretty obvious who to lay it at the feet of.

sure, that still doesn't bring a project in at budget without major sacrifices by someone. Thankfully with my clients I really don't have to explain who to blame, but I do have to come up with solution to fix it

He's just too busy to negotiate tariffs and make deals with all of the countries now.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-05-16/trump-says-us-will-set-tariff-rates-for-other-nations-in-weeks

President Donald Trump said he would set tariff rates for US trading partners “over the next two to three weeks,” saying his administration lacks the capacity to negotiate deals with all of its trading partners.

Trump said Friday that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick “will be sending letters out essentially telling people” what “they’ll be paying to do business in the United States.”

Quote

“I think we’re going to be very fair. But it’s not possible to meet the number of people that want to see us,” the president said during a meeting with business executives in the United Arab Emirates.

The US president asserted there are “150 countries that want to make a deal.” He didn’t say how many, or which, nations would receive letters.

The White House and Commerce Department didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment overnight in the US.

Spoiler

Trump announced higher tariffs on dozens of trading partners on April 2, but later paused them for 90 days amid investor panic to give foreign governments time to negotiate. Yet the president in recent weeks has moved away from the idea he would engage in a back-and-forth with every partner.

While the Trump administration is prioritizing trade talks with more than a dozen nations, a lack of manpower and capacity makes it impossible to hold concurrent negotiations with all the countries caught up in the president’s so-called reciprocal tariffs plan.

Tariffs are charged at the border by US Customs and Border Protection, but the extra costs are often passed on in part or full to US consumers.

Earlier this month, Trump said he would simply dictate tariff levels for many nations looking to avoid higher duties.

Negotiations are still ongoing with several economies, including the Japan, South Korea, India and the European Union. Trump recently agreed to a trade framework with the UK and to a mutual temporary tariff reduction with China to buy more time for talks.

The US president said Thursday that New Delhi made an offer to drop tariffs on US goods, a proposal that the Indian government did not confirm.

“We have four or five other deals coming immediately,” Trump said on May 9, as he touted his UK blueprint. “We have many deals coming down the line. Ultimately, we’re just signing the rest of them in.”

Trump tells Walmart to 'eat the tariffs' instead of raising prices

WASHINGTON, May 17 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday that Walmart <WMT.N> should "eat the tariffs" instead of blaming duties imposed by his administration on imported goods for the retailer's increased prices.

His comments were in response to the world's largest retailer saying this week it would have to start raising prices later this month due to high tariffs.

The Reuters Tariff Watch newsletter is your daily guide to the latest global trade and tariff news. Sign up here.

"Walmart should STOP trying to blame Tariffs as the reason for raising prices throughout the chain. Walmart made BILLIONS OF DOLLARS last year, far more than expected," Trump said in a social media post.

"Between Walmart and China they should, as is said, 'EAT THE TARIFFS,' and not charge valued customers ANYTHING."

Walmart said it has always worked to keep its prices as low as possible, adding that this practice will not stop.

"We’ll keep prices as low as we can for as long as we can given the reality of small retail margins," the company said in a statement to Reuters.

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said on Thursday the retailer could not absorb all the tariff costs because of narrow retail margins. Even so, he said, the company was committed to ensuring that tariff-related costs on general merchandise, which primarily comes from China, would not drive food prices higher.

Many U.S. companies have either slashed or pulled their full-year expectations amid friction between the U.S. and its trading partners, particularly China, as consumers curtail spending.

As a bellwether of U.S. consumer health, Walmart's explicit statement about the impact of tariffs is a signpost for how the trade war is affecting the retail sector. Walmart is noted for its ability to manage costs more aggressively than other companies to keep prices low.

Every week, 255 million people shop in its stores or place orders online around the world, and 90% of the U.S. population lives within 10 miles (16 km) of a Walmart.

Walmart's disclosure comes about three weeks after a published report that Amazon
(AMZN.O), opens new tab

planned to disclose how much Trump-imposed tariffs were adding to the costs of its products. The White House blasted Amazon over the report, which the company promptly denied.

Isn't the owner of HD ultra maga?

The prior CEO was Yuge Maga.  The current CEO is HD company career man, and this posture seems to be emblematic of sucking Trump's mushroom.  But in scanning the internets, if the current CEO is a Trumper, he at least appears to be quieter about it.

We'll see if they stand firm if and when Trump makes good on his increase in lumber tariffs.

As I’ve said repeatedly on this board- dominant players consolidate market share by leaving prices flat or even lowering them curing periods of secular cost increases if they are able.
Gross Margin is a war chest, not a strategic objective.

Maybe the HD stance is a way to launder their bribe money in a way that makes their customers happy. Instead of just donating to a super pac or other means of direct payment, do this as an example for other businesses. Could be the same cost to them.

but, customers should consider the fact that they can absorb that high a number and still be a profitable company.

it's almost like shareholders have been extracting wealth from consumers for a LOOOOONG time and many core businesses are still sound without exploitative profit margins

So, corporate interests couldn't be bothered to eat a few percentage points of inflation for the good of their fellow citizens.

But they'll gladly eat a full 10% or more to shield this fucking jagoff from the consequences of his actions.

Shareholders should revolt.

There’s a lot to unpack here but the simplest version is that that there is a huge difference between an inflationary spike caused by a demand flood+supply shock vs a secular cost increase that doesn’t change the demand signal.

In the first situation (2022) a market leader will try float slightly behind the pack- stay a price leader but increase prices at the same rate as everyone else because there’s more buying power coming at you. In the second situation (2025) they deploy dry powder to consolidate and take share from less well capitalized or efficient competitors.

Of course an announcement like this pleases Trump and HD’s customers alike. But it’s also the right thing to do for the business if they can afford to do it without cutting into muscle.

Also, per Reuters, HD Is Exec. VP said:

"There's items that we have that could potentially be impacted from a tariff that, candidly, we won't have going forward if it doesn't make sense inside the line structure,".
