Let's not do this. I live in LA, too, and I might look at it differently if I made 8 million dollars a year. Both Austin and LA have their appeal.

I live in LA....by choice.  Love it here.  But ole Buckeye makes Austin seem like Tupelo, which is really rich for someone who I think lives in Ohio.  I've lived all over the country, Austin has a lot of fans and some coaches could careless about places as large as LA.

It is hard to find a team even close to UT in underperforming their talent, particularly considering we have a 4 year starter at QB who was a pre-season heisman candidate. Yes, you could argue LSU, but they had 14 players drafted in the last NFL draft (a record tying # and a record tying 5 in the first round, including #1 overall), have a new QB and offensive coordinator, had 4 NFL top talents opt-out due to Covid, and they can hang their hats on the fact that they are the defending national champion.  The only team even close is Florida St. But, they had a losing record last year and have a new coaching staff.

That worst season thing doesn't mean shit because teams that are dominant can become shit (see: Texas), and the ooc schedule started to get more competitive.
Looking at our schedule and the ooc losses from those years:
2014 - Maybe he beats BYU and UCLA.
2015 - A competent offense may make the Notre Dame game decent, not like Mack had recruited a QB though by this point. Maybe he doesn't choke away Cal
2016 - He probably doesn't lose to Cal
2017 - Maybe he beats Maryland, I doubt he beats USC, I think we were all surprised how close we came to beating them.
2018 - Again he might beat Maryland.
2019 - I don't think he beats LSU.

He might have a few more wins, but the way the offense had looked in his final years and the lack of good recruits coming in and player development, I think it may have gotten worse. Charlie tried to instill discipline and did okay bringing in some talent but there was a lot he did not do well. Herman has brought in some talent and has done somewhat better. Not as many blowout losses as in the last two regimes.

that makes the path harder IMO.

Yep. Riley has a structural issue with fielding a good defense based on practice and resource allocation. Plus he hired Bennie Wylie so he's got some major holes as a head coach.

4 years in and he's taken Oklahoma to their worst roster and team in two decades. But maybe it's their turn to miss on a hire.

He's dragging us into a dumb argument. Saban lives in Alabama... willingly.

Whoever replaces Mensa will get 25-35M over 5 minimum.   We aren’t getting Urban on a 5@5M more like a 5@10M if it happens

That is exactly my point. There is not a coach that is good enough to be a virtual guarantee to turn UT football around that would be worth paying $25mn to buyout current staff and then on top of that guarantee another $25-$35mn over 5 years. I would much rather lockdown a more certain future in guaranteeing Urban Meyer or Shanahan $50mn then potentially piss away another $25-$35mn and be in the same boat 3 years later!  Therefore, unfortunately in this environment, if we can't lock down Urban Meyer or Shanahan with an offer that is too good to refuse, the prudent thing to do is just wait a year, reduce the buyout by $10mn and let Herman completely implode without this year's senior class.

It's bound to happen before I die, right?

Right...?

I mean they are hot garbage on defense right now and have been for years and that is unlikely to change.

We are just not going to be the team that takes advantage...much like we failed to do during the John Blake era.

Shelley Meyer doesn't want to live in L.A. or Austin.  She wants to split time between Columbus and Florida and has zero interest in Urban coaching again.  Neither do his kids.  People love to shit on Urban's health problems but they are real and are exacerbated by stress.

All of that said, Urban calls the shots and could decide to coach again, but his family would strongly resist it.  I have been told that Urban is very aware of his legacy and what a NC at a third school would mean.  He is also very aware of his winning percentage (3rd after Rockne and Leahy) and doesn't want to jeopardize that by taking the wrong job.

Frankly, I would be shocked if he took the Texas job but never underestimate Urban's ego/self-belief.  The only job I can see Urban taking would be Notre Dame if Kelly bailed in the relatively near future for some reason.

So why do the Meyers hang out in Fort Collins, Co so much?? 😁

Seems to me that if they were friends, that, and the fact that Meyer already has all the money he'll ever need, might keep him from taking the UT job - unless Herman has already been fired. (It would look bad if Herman is fired and Meyer announced as new HC a week later.) Keep in mind that a million bucks to Meyer is probably like fifty grand to you or me. Would you screw over a friend for $50k?

Which one do you want? Half due now, half upon completion.

Seems some people are looking at NC now and saying "see, they fucked up firing him," ignoring the fact that Mack has even said that he needed to step back and observe as a commentator for a few years to get some perspective and get reenergized with a fresh approach.

Anyone thinking his ride at Texas was going to do anything other than continue to go downhill if continued is delusional.

I'm all in on FUMB.  gravy train ridin'/program destroyin' mother fucking pantywaste.  dude fucked us good on the way out.

LSU this year is going through the pains we had last year

LSU last year is what we were supposed to be this year

(I mean we weren't actually going to be as good as LSU last year but you get my point)

Yet they hang out in Ft. Collins often?  Also, there is no real threat in this conference, save OU.  He can increase his winning percentage in the Big 12.  Hell he probably had more Texas talent than 3/4 of the schools in this confernece.

Cut new theology.

$1m per win.  Straight up.   3-year deal.  If the wins roll in, the cashflow to Bellmont will accelerate way past the $1M per win outlay.

You get 1 OC and 1 DC.  Year 1, $100k per win.  Year 2, $125k per win.  Year 3, $150k per win.

All other assistants on some kind of "base + commission (wins)".

It's all performance based.

and NO BUY OUT.

I think Urbs takes that deal.  It's a double-dog-dareya.  If he doesn't take it, he's "weak" and "not hungry" and "unwilling to put skin in the game".

The optics are superb.  There's no Boomhauer pornonumber attached to the news cycle.

They're millionaires several times over and this isn't a permanent term thing for Urban-- less than eight years, probably. She can split time wherever the fuck she wants. Who even knows if she's been to Austin, she might find she likes it here a lot more than either of those places.

I bet there is a BMD with a plane that would fly her wherever the fuck she wants to go whenever the fuck she wants to get there.

Does Urban want to coach again - and are the money /situation right for him at Texas?

I've read Urban is very fond of Austin.  It's no Ohio, but it has its plusses.

Just to add more to this shit stew, I honestly feel like Jared Wiley could be to us what Stogner is currently to OU. He might honestly be the best TE we’ve had since Blaine Irby 2008. Yet here we are playing grab ass with Cade Brewer aka Geoff Swaim  2.0. Why don’t we use our big body tall TEs the way OU used Calcaterra, Andrews, Stogner, etc?

Cade Brewer is only similar to Swaim as a receiving threat

It's a real problem when these knuckleheads leave the self-congratulating atmosphere of the Cloak Room.  They think that their opinions carry weight.  They have this self-aggrandizing view of themselves and come to other boards spouting off complete imbecilic nonsense.  It's a real problem.

You need to look in the mirror and ask yourself why you don't want us to have Urban Meyer. And then you need to not spend so much time on a Texas message board.

I don't care. I'm just a neutral observer. I do find it interesting watching Texas fans who've been shitting all over Urban for the past decade twist themselves into knots convincing themselves that of course he'll be the next Texas coach and all it takes will be an offer.
