The FBI says it is investigating a "targeted terror attack" in Colorado - with reports a man threw petrol bombs at people at a pro-Israel event.

FBI Director Kash Patel said agents were on the scene and working with local law enforcement.

Witnesses told US media the attacker threw Molotov cocktails at people doing a walk to remember Israeli hostages in Gaza.

A male suspect is in custody.

Local police said there were "multiple victims" and a large part of the downtown area around Pearl Street had been cordoned off.

Police chief Steve Redfearn said it happened around 1.26pm local time and initial reports were that "people were being set on fire".

He said some victims were in hospital and injuries ranged from "very serious" to "more minor".

"When we arrived we encountered multiple victims that were injured, with injuries consistent with burns," Mr Redfearn told the media.

He said a suspect had been pointed out and taken into custody without incident.

"This area is not safe yet and we're dealing with a vehicle of interest," he added.

Mr Redfearn said it happened as a "group of pro-Israel people" were holding a peaceful demonstration but that he couldn't confirm a specific group had been targeted.

He said it was too early to call it a "terror attack".

Tell me again why someone would fire bomb a peaceful pro-Israel rally.

It is fucking horrible but it happened for what reason?

This isn't the right thread to discuss it but suffice to say certain current events are happening that make the likelihood of something like this happening unfortunately high. These things will likely keep happening and/or get worse.

No notes on this particular tweet but worth keeping in mind that this Twitter account is extremely bad and you shouldn't follow it or lend it any clicks. It's not a real org and it's run by one crazy lady in Long Island.

Reuters Link

Broadly the facts seem correct, but no children were mentioned in the Reuter's info on the attack.

Spoiler

Four women and four men between 52 and 88 years old were transported to hospitals, Boulder police said. Authorities had earlier put the count of the injured at six and said at least one of them was in a critical condition.

"As a result of these preliminary facts, it is clear that this is a targeted act of violence and the FBI is investigating this as an act of terrorism," the FBI special agent in charge of the Denver Field Office, Mark Michalek, said.

Michalek named the suspect as Mohamed Soliman, who was hospitalized shortly after the attack. Reuters could not immediately locate contact information for him or his family.

True.  I wonder how many Americans realize that Palestinians are semites?

It's an incredibly complicated problem with millenia of back story, but sure, let's move the embassy to Jerusalem, that will fix everything.

lol. Wrong again. It’s totally a religious-based terror attack. See ya Mohamed.

Don't take it up with me, write Reuters a sternly worded letter.

I wasn't lending credence to that tweet/tweeter nor attacking it. I've honestly never had a Twitter account. Wasn't commenting on your take either. Just pointing out fact vs fiction based on what I consider a very reputable news source.

Well that Twitter account did end up including false info about children being attacked to play up the severity.

I shan't lie. Often, when dealing with the excessive wild roses on my property, I really crave a flamethrower.

Does that make me evil? I submit those roses are the bane of humanity. Well, at least my humanity.

I think she would be wise to listen to the lunatic rants of a poster that routinely pops off half-baked posts, reflexively defending any perceived Palestinian slight, throwing common sense to the side in a very Pavlovian fashion.

How exactly does one determine if a molotov cocktail was thrown at a Jew or at an Israeli?

The man accused of setting eight people aflame at a pro-Israel protest here has been charged with a federal hate crime after telling investigators he wanted to kill all Zionist people and wished all of them were dead, according to an FBI affidavit released Monday.

Anti-Zionist. I believe that has something to do with religion.

Anti-Zionism is not the same thing as Antisemitism.

edit - and I'm not sure what Zionism has to do with the attack anyway. He was going after Jews, not Zionists.

They've charged the suspect with a hate crime. I'm going to go ahead and assume that's a much more appropriate and winnable charge than terrorism.

My mistake. I think he's also confused between the two "antis." It's clear he targeted Jews. They were out there trying to bring awareness to the fact that there are still Jewish hostages being held by Hamas. Obviously that doesn't also automatically make them Zionists. I'm Jewish and the amount of time I spent before last year distinguishing in my own mind between anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism is near zero. What I think is not in doubt is that the policies of the governments of Israel and the US are making life for Jewish people in the US, whether Zionist or not, more dangerous.

Overstayed his visa so here illegally.  I thought this was all under control.  Poor poor Jose.

Overstayed his visa, but was then granted a work visa in 2023. I'm pretty sure it was a different POTUS/admin that year.

You got to it prior to my response. You're basically asking a zealot nut job to have distinction in his insane plan of violence.

I would also add that it isnt JUST the policy of the government thats causing issue for Jewish people in the US. I'm of the firm opinion that the strong and clear anti-Isreal sentiment among certain political and non-political parties is contributing heavily. Joe public doesn't pay any attention to detail and thus the devil in the detail is lost. Those already inclined to dislike people of the Jewish faith have their positions bolstered by a perception (accurate or not) that its now a popular opinion/position.

Its certainly adding to antisemitic ideas in the broader strokes. Though I am fully capable of understanding that's not the ideological foundation of all pro-Palestinian supporters. The detail are being skipped over.

The man accused of injuring 12 people on Boulder’s Pearl Street Mall with a “makeshift flamethrower” and Molotov cocktails spent more than a year planning the “targeted act of violence” against a group calling for the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza, law enforcement officials said Monday.

Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45, intended to carry out a mass shooting in downtown Boulder and only switched to an explosive plan after he was denied a gun because of his immigration status, county investigators said in an arrest affidavit.

Police identified four additional victims in the attack on Monday, bringing the total to 12, Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty said during an afternoon briefing. The four additional victims had minor injuries, Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn said. Two people injured in the attack are still hospitalized. Officials could not say whether any of the victims were bystanders.

Soliman drove from Castle Rock to the Pearl Street Mall armed with 18 Molotov cocktails and a backpack weed sprayer filled with gasoline that he planned to use to kill a group of demonstrators who regularly walk in front of the courthouse, according to court records.

He threw two of the Molotov cocktails and police recovered another 16 at the scene, Dougherty said.

Federal officials said Soliman was living in Colorado Springs illegally with his wife and five children after overstaying a tourist visa that expired in 2023. Officials said the family cooperated with a search warrant and deferred questions about their immigration status to the Department of Homeland Security.

Soliman told investigators that he waited for a year to attack the group because he wanted his daughter to graduate from high school first, according to his arrest affidavit.

Soliman told federal officials he arrived at 12:55 p.m. and waited for the group to reach him, according to court documents.

To get as close to the group as possible, officials said Soliman dressed like a gardener. He wore an orange vest and bought flowers from Home Depot.

The attack happened just before the Jewish holiday of Shavuot, which began at sundown on Sunday.

Soliman planned for more than a year and specifically targeted Boulder’s Run for Their Lives chapter, which Soliman called a “Zionist group,” federal officials said.

Soliman told law enforcement “that he wanted to kill all Zionist people and wished they were all dead,” the affidavit stated.

The 45-year-old told investigators that he didn’t expect to survive the attack, according to court documents. He sprayed himself with gasoline and expected to burn alongside his victims.

Honestly at this point the functional difference between anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism is close to nothing, especially among the most likely to take direct action, even if that’s an unpopular stance to take on this board.
