What in the fuckall does "Baylor over Indiana" have to do with the best team in the country? Having 12 or 16 teams or whatever in the playoff does nothing to determine who is the best team. We all know the best teams at the end of the season. Everything else is mental masturbation. The playoff are just a money grab that devalue what used to be the best regular season of any sport. Debating the ankle biters is a game for losers.

Neither Baylor nor Indiana belong in the same zip code as the playoffs. Jesus.

This is a pretty stupid post considering Indiana literally went to the fucking playoffs last year, and the Big 12 sucks and Baylor could win it any year and get an automatic bid to the playoffs.

Texas, who I would humbly submit as one of the best teams in the country last year, almost got smoked by fucking Arizona State. So saying none of those teams, or teams like them, belong in the playoffs conversation when one of them went last year seems pretty...well...something an Aggie would dismissively say.

And inversely, a Texas team that beats Ohio State on the road is going to get a massive amount of grace for potentially slipping up midseason against someone (or someones). Because it will likely be (like 2023) the best non-conf resume win of any team in the playoff conversation.

Credit Texas and CDC for going:

2017/18 - USC
2019 - LSU
2020 - (should have been LSU, but fucking COVID)
2022/23 - Bama
2024 - Michigan
2025/26 - Ohio State
2027 - Michigan
2028/29 - Notre Dame

Need to get some legit for 2030/31 to bridge the gap until 2032/33 Arizona State

And none of them have been neutral site BS - we will go play at anyone's house.

Adding to this - the 2023 bama game would have gotten us in over them if Jordan Travis didn’t break his leg. Some of these games can be more than resume boosts and just straight up make it a H2H decision.

Yeah, the 3 years in a row @ major non con opponents is a product of the early exit from the B12. They flipped the Michigan game to an away game to make Fox whole, but originally was a home game. I am not sure if we are going to get a return trip from Michigan or tOSU out of the deal, but I hope so.

I know *why* it happened, just not sure something that wild has played out recently for anyone. I'm sure it happened in the past with just 8 or 10 teams in conferences and 4-5 OOC games every year.

8 minutes ago, Had Enough said:

Actual results that prove it.  Take your Baylor.  They lose to Auburn then lose two more in the Big 12.  Does 9-3 Baylor go over 10-2 Indiana?  If Baylor loses out, then there’s a chance they think twice when scheduling future games.  They don’t know they’re out or in at 10-2, but they do know they’re out at 9-3.  Also with the loss to Auburn, they’ve now opened the door for a 4-loss Auburn to knock them out.  Some ADs are willing to risk that; others are not.

The Texas, the Ohio States will always have room for error more than others partly due to conference affiliations.  Outside those two conferences, stacking wins is more important.  And it’s incredibly difficult to imagine an SEC conference championship participant not get a playoff invite in favor of a non-championship participant.  So what about a 10-3 Indiana as compared to a 9-3 Texas?  That would imply they lose to OSU too or made it further in conference.  A 10-2 Texas is getting in over a 10-2 Indiana is the scenario you presented tweak to the formula or not.  They can justify at that point before the additional data point.

I do think the media hype is a big deal and more impactful about getting big games than this is.

Im an advocate for scheduling the good stuff but not all those with authority will view it the same.  I’ve already got plans to watch us play at Oregon.  My argument has nothing to do with how I feel but more of how others may act.

The rules changes being discussed is exactly to help the committee justify an example like taking a 9-3 Baylor over a 10-2 Indiana. Do they do that? We don't know.

No shit we have no idea whether this change actually has an impact. My view is that it damned sure could and should. Taking the "I'll believe it when I see it" position is fine, but it doesn't mean everyone else is just immediately balls deep on the premise that this changes everything. I hope it does with the scheduling, but, yeah, maybe nothing happens.

the risk/reward for rape is worth it

a win over a bottom-barrel sec team keeps them in the conversation UNTIL that 3rd loss

a loss to barn and they are out of the conversation until november *if* that is their only loss halfway through league play at 7-1 or 8-1

not playing the game they are not in the conversation until november if they get there with only 1 loss

not being in the conversation is status quo for them now

this game has nothing but upside

and besides BARN SUX if rape can't win this game at home they shouldn't be in the conversation anyway

People make decisions based on emotion and then justify those decisions with whatever reason, rationale or logic they can summon or leverage. The committee leans heavily on their internal formulas to justify their decisions. They did that this past year. They admit doing that in this press release.

So, yes, it will matter. Will it make everyone happy? No. Will many autists who follow all of this whine that we're not leaving it totally up to machines or a formula or transparently receiving the decision-helping tools? Yes.

If you don't think this is going to put more pressure on OOC scheduling, I don't know what could be done to actually alter your POV. The build-up to the early OOC games this season has been enormous. The media is giving the programs Texas, OSU, Florida, OU, Michigan, Bama, Clemson, FSU, LSU, ATM, Auburn, Baylor, and Notre Dame a ton of credit and, really for the first time, the pansy schedulers are truly being ridiculed. Indiana and Penn State are being mocked aggressively. These rule changes further embolden the CFP committee to follow suit and, if having to split hairs, lean on SOS to justify a difficult decision.

If Texas loses close road games to Ohio State and Florida and then loses the CCG in OT again, a 10-3 Texas is getting in versus a 10-2 Indiana who lost to Oregon and PSU and played virtually no one else. This rule change likely helps someone immediately this season. Schedule tough OOC games and don't lose ugly games and you have a great shot of getting into the CFP.

ACC & B1G schools. Fuck the Big 12. They deserve nothing from Texas.

With these changes, there is no reason that Texas can't play a full P4 (+/- ND) schedule and I think Texas should.

How 'Deep' Will Texas Go in Season Opener (Wednesday) - Vogel

How 'Deep' Will Texas Go in Season Opener (Wednesday)

A comment made by Steve Sarkisian on Monday really caught my attention:

"I'm not too consumed with, 'Hey, this is our starting 11,' knowing, especially on defense — we'll probably play over 30 guys in the first half of this game. At least well into the 20s of guys that will play in the game."

Could Texas realistically play 30 players on the defensive side of the ball in the season opener against Ohio State?

It would be an extreme jump from what we have seen in previous early season, marquee matchups where the Longhorns took on Alabama twice and Michigan a year ago.

  • 21 players played five or more defensive snaps at Michigan in 2024
  • 22 players played five or more defensive snaps at Alabama in 2023
  • 19 players played five or more defensive snaps vs. Alabama in 2022

The depth on the Texas defense has been talked about all offseason. The Longhorns feel like there is legitimate pieces in the two and three-deep across the board positionally. Exactly what you want to hear for a season that could linger 16 or 17 Saturdays in the fall and winter.

But again, my question and point lies in the season opener in Columbus. I expect to see that number of defensive players around 22 come August 30.

Texas has often relied upon experienced, veteran players over the shiny new toy in the box.

LB Anthony Hill Jr. saw just 25 snaps in Tuscaloosa against Alabama in 2023 and star edge rusher Colin Simmons was on the field for just 21 snaps in Ann Arbor. Both obviously went on to have fantastic freshmen campaigns for the Longhorns, but in these major contests early in the season, there remained a leash on their snap counts.

Looking at Longhorns – not just true freshmen – who may be in a similar boat when it comes to early limitations before breaking out into massive contributions later in the season, that list looks like this for me:

  • STAR Graceson Littleton*
  • DB Xavier Filsaime
  • CB Kobe Black*
  • CB Kade Phillips
  • EDGE Lance Jackson
  • EDGE Justus Terry
  • EDGE Zina Umeozulu
  • DL Lavon Johnson

For clarity, these are the guys I see the Longhorns utilizing often as rotational pieces in 2025.

For Graceson Littleton and Kobe Black specifically, who both have seen plenty of time with the first unit as fall camp has progressed, I am reminded of the desire for age and experience on the outside against a wide receiver corps as talented as Ohio State.

Sarkisian spoke about the idea of developing depth as the season continues to ensure the defense can withstand an injury or absence from the lineup at any time.

"We have guys that might be nicked up and that would allow — Hey, the next guy is probably going to play better than this guy nicked up," Sarkisian said. "We're constantly pushing our two-deep that they're all ones. They've got to play like ones. they've got to prepare like ones, they've got to think like a one and then, over time, when a guy goes down, a Trevor Goosby can go in and it feel normal."

Sarkisian points to the injury to Derek Williams Jr. against Oklahoma that allowed for Andrew Mukuba to step in full-time seamlessly and begin dominating in the back end of the secondary. As a result, Mukuba went in the 2nd round of the 2025 NFL Draft and the Longhorns' defense continued to play suffocating defense in the backend.

"We're constantly pushing those guys to all prepare, think, play that way, so those (position) battles go on. I hesitate to say it's always just a position battle because they're all going to play. A lot of the times it's who takes the field first, but we play all of our guys a lot, especially early in the season."

indiana had no top 25 wins and were not competitive against domer

domer went up 27-3 with 5 minutes to go

126 of indiana's 278 yards were in the last 5 minutes

it was a jimbo fisher masterclass is late cosmetic points

indiana's possessions (plays/yards) in the first 55 minutes of the game:

3/-3/punt

4/24/pick

8/38/punt - 2 first downs!

6/25/punt - 2 first downs!

9/48/field goal - 2 first downs!

1/6/half

3/-9/punt

3/2/punt

5/12/punt - 1 first down!

that's 143 yards of offense and 7 first downs in the first 55 minutes of the game

None of your statistics fucking matter, dude. You think I don't know Indiana was a paper tiger? Of course I know. BUT THEY MADE THE FUCKING PLAYOFFS. Why? Because there is a human selection committee and they use facts and discussion to make subjective opinions. Therefore, to make blanket statements like "Programs like Baylor and Indiana have no business ever talking about playoffs" in a world where one just MADE the playoffs and the world of automatic qualifiers for the 4 conference champions exist...is a stupid fucking statement. I don't care how much you fucking screech about how they don't below, it doesn't matter, BECAUSE THEY WENT AND COULD GO AGAIN.

I am 100% convinced that Dillingham started preparing for Texas the day the seeding got announced. Basically like 4 weeks to game plan for one team. If they would have had a week to prepare, that game isn't nearly as close as it was.

It was their defense that kept them in the game.  They took a lot of time off the clock but didn't really score for most of the game, but their defense caused a lot of drive killing negative plays.

Two man is a good passing situation coverage assuming the opponent doesn’t have a QB who’s much of a running threat. It should require a difficult throw to beat it. There was a period of time in the 2010s when it was the coverage de jour in the NFL, but now over half the league has QBs who’ll gash you with their legs, so it’s more of a mix in against those QBs instead of a major

I was going to chime in along these lines. I'm not giving any WR a whole game without some press.

Even Randy Moss is going to catch a stray.

The defense just had to be situationally aware when it happens. Probably not gonna happen to the field on a 3rd down midfield...  But a 2nd and long on their end or a 3rd down in the redzone with a Safety cheating... I just need the QB to hold the ball for an extra pat and the rush to disrupt the rhythm.

My defense is supposed to be great, right? I get that great includes decisions, but I'm not walking away from playing.

Wrt SoS:

Seems like a step in the correct direction.  Games vs ~Top 30 tend to be the best indicator for how many losses a schedule produces.

And as much as people poke fun at it "quality loss" is a strong indicator your team is still good vs a quality win and bad loss.
