Well, what's the longer wait, 8 months through a normal offseason, or 34 days between games that have even the slightest amount of doubt as to who will win?  I think this next month is going to be almost as bad as the offseason.  The offseason doesn't have football but you know that. This next month is prime football season, but does anything Texas does really matter?  I guess maybe a little bit. The offensive line can work to find cohesion but this was a unit that was pretty good.  Arch can get reps but we've already seen him be really good against crappy teams last year, so, this won't be anything new.  A really talented freshman class can get a ton of snaps to see where they are at, while our good players can play just enough to keep their edge sharp.  I mean, I guess it's football at DKR and we only get so many of those games so you should enjoy it, but it's hard to have the juices flowing too terribly much with this slate upcoming.  The SEC going to 9 conference games with a required 10th game against a P4 team is just so so so welcome to me.

I'd rather play and lose a game like yesterday 11 times out of 10 then this dreck we have on our scheudule. I hope (and expect) games like that to continue going into the future, and I'd also like to see no more than 1 truly outmatched team as opposed to 3 in a row.  Mid major interesting team, Big OOC matchup against a blue blood, cupcake (UTEP or some other shit UT System school), bye, conference schedule. That would be a perfect September to me going forward.  This September is rather something to endure.

Thoughts on game week against SJSU spartans (I think- didn't look it up- don't care enough to) go here.

Oh, I think there will be a lot more to enjoy over the next few weeks.

Yeah, they're gimmes, but we're going to see the offense gel, including Baxter and Wisner pushing each other at RB.  And I think the defense will get a shutout.

And, most importantly, we'll get to see how Arch responds to the national jokes.  You know he's seeing the memes and hearing the gleeful shit talking about how if his last name were Smith, he wouldn't even be here, etc.  I bet Arch goes apeshit for at least 10 touchdowns in the next three games.  He seems like the kind of kid to respond very well to being disrespected like this.  No one will care, because it's against nobodies, but he'll get his head right (and his mechanics?) and be ready for the trips to Gainesville and Dallas.  And we get a bye at a nice time right before those.

I think four weeks from today we're all feeling an awful lot better.

Also, this team getting a chip on its shoulder early may turn out to be a very good thing...

San Jose state is not a total laughing stock as they were in the not so distant past.    I mean they did go into OT last year against OU’s new Savior of a QB when he was leading Washington St in the PAC 2.  But yea Sparty of San Jose shouldn’t be too much of an issue.    I think?

After yesterday I kind of wished we’d had played San Jose in game one and then Ohio State in game two much like we will next season when we open at home against Texas St and follow with the Buckeyes at home the following week.   I understand the thinking about playing the fellow top tier team in game one to potentially make a statement out of the gate or see where you stack up.  But on the other hand, the thinking about getting the rust out in a real game situation against an actual opponent is valid too.  Unfortunately in the college ranks unlike high school, you don’t have the opportunity to scrimmage in August against someone else so that’s why I’ve always like reserving week two for that marque game.

Yeah that was my ideal- decent group of 5 team (not Boise or something- but an 8-4 type program down there) and then big blue blood tilt.  Everyone probably is better served (including viewing public) by that

San Jose St lost to Central Michigan 16-14 at home. We’re gonna beat the ever living fuck outta them.

Sark needs to be a straight up asshole to Arch this next month. Really challenge him and the offense. We only have one more loss or we have to win the SEC.

I actually like our non conference next year.  We got an up and coming Texas State who will be in the PAC 12 for what that is worth.  Then Buckeye followed by UTSA who has exceeded most expectations as a new program going into its second decade.  Moving forward I think you keep one of those two, a power 4 which we’ve already filled for the next four years with OSU, Michigan and Norte Dame and one of the group of fives.   I will bet my bottom dollar that Bama, Tennessee, UGA etc are going to keep a slot open for a cupcake like Austin Peay, Mercer, Tennessee-Martin, etc. and claim it’s a regional matchup or something to justify keeping it to pump up the not too engaged fans.

Agreed. Next years schedule is going to be nuts.
I suspect we will get, Texas state, Ohio state, UTSA, OU, aggy, Arkansas, LSU, bama, Auburn, TN, South Carolina or Missouri, and ole miss.
maybe we get South Carolina and Missouri and miss bama since that happened recently.
I think with Arch coming back we absolutely have Ole Miss, LSU and TN on the schedule since we’ve missed them recently. I hope it’s Mizzou we miss as we’ve played them plenty and there is no “newness” associated with it while there is also no historical importance to the game.

Can we please use 2 punt returners?  How many times do we have to see punts not get fielded and lose tons of yardage?

Niblett is scared to field punts. He muffed several in scrimmage situations in camp, per several people who would know.

I don't know why he is back there.

I was pretty surprised that wasn’t Moore returning punts. He must have been too busy being a complete non-factor on offense.

San Jose State has a returning QB (Walker Eget) and runs a unique offense with a lot of quick passes. Eget was only sacked 5 times last year on 328 pass attempts. They can't run the ball at all.

Their defense got gutted in the portal, and their special teams sucks (missed two FGs with a lefty kicker to lose the Central Michigan game, one of them was a chip shot).

I'll say we win something like 48-10.

If they run ball control, possession passing we won’t have enough possessions to score 48 with our lack of speed on offense.  Lack of explosive plays will be an issue for us all year.  35-10.

Well, OP pretty much said it.  We’ve got a solid month (3 games & a BYE week) that offers zero opportunity to measure and assess this team’s much needed progression after their week 1 performance, granted it was week 1…..on the road….against a defending champion top ranked team.  San Jose State, UTEP, & Sam Houston State are what they are so pretty much nothing can be gleamed by performances in those games.  That next opportunity will come the first week of October at The Swamp.  It’s easy, and appropriate, to consider that repeatedly we’ve seen team quality week 1 to week 2 historically jump considerably.  It’s also true that something was very wrong with the offense in The Shoe yesterday be that the shortcomings of a still inexperienced starting QB under enormous pressure, a coaching staff that stuck to a conservative game plan too long, or possibly even that our starting WR group has taken a step back compared to the heavily transfer portal-fed groups the past couple of years.  There are a lot of possibilities to consider, but for now all we can do is wait for the SEC schedule. Right now I see a lot of possible futures on the table, and they are all over the map from outright disaster to early growing pains give way to true contender.  But though we all like to opine, some quite strongly, none of us know a damn thing what to expect anymore than we did at 11am Saturday afternoon in Columbus. But these next few weeks……don’t get too high and don’t get too low.

Yesterday was a disaster and we couldn't even complete simple pitch and catches, but writing off our explosiveness is silly.

I think(hope?) yesterday's game was an aberration, but we're fortunate to have 3 easy games in September to get things right. IMO we should go pass heavy and keep RB room fresh and healthy for conference play. No need for Baxter or Wisner to have lots of carries in these non-conference games.

Good call, we're 37.5 point favorites.

To that end, anyone else surprised to see Baxter on kickoff returns? That was a huge wtf moment for me and it was the first play of the game. If only I knew what was to follow...

Random things I'd like to see over the next 3 weeks:

We joked about not needing a FG kicker because we were only scoring TDs all Offseason, but can we get at least an idea of how good our transfer kicker is/ where his limitations are.  We'll need to know later in the season.

Starting LG. I'm not buying that moving Neto to LT opened Flood and other coaches eyes to Stroh's progression. Stroh looked fine yesterday, but besides Baker's false starts, most OL problems I saw were on the left side.

More rotation in the RB room. Did Clark or Gibson even see the field yesterday? We need to keep Wisner and Baxter fresh for the season ahead.

Tre Moore. Where was he at? It seemed like we kept 5 DBs out there all game, even though there were plenty of plays where the offense had less than 3 receivers on the field.

Groupings of DT. Aside from the Tate TD, the defense overall played great yesterday. Still, I thought we would've put more pressure on Sayin than we did. Osu had a tough time running the ball, maybe figuring out the best combinations of tackles that will complement each other will help in pass rush.

No more designed QB runs. Like, seriously, what in the ever living fuck? When he was first hired, Sark said his running game is for the RBs, not the QB. I didn't mind the goal line call, if it had been in 12 personnel and not over the middle. But there seemed to have been plays that weren't just Arch scrambling.

There’s no way in hell that I’m subjecting myself to reading through all the toxic threads on the board, so for those interested, here are some extended thoughts on the offense after a rewatch

My MVP

Spoiler

I really, really liked what I saw from Endries. He was discussed as a receiving TE in the offseason but I thought he was really good as a blocker Saturday. Consistently found work and boxed out some really good LBs. I only noticed one whiff. Townsend got snaps on the first drive and showed plenty of physicality hitting a DE. Something to watch. Shannon looked lost a couple times but had a really nice pass pro rep vs Downs. Endries’s performance was my single biggest takeaway from the game. I thought he was awesome.

Arch and passing game generally

Spoiler

Endries is a bigger takeaway than Arch because his performance is more instructive for the rest of our season. Arch was really bad but it’s too early to write him off. Too many questions (nerves, inexperience, WRs getting blanketed). After the initial disappointment, my emotional reaction is to wait and see. Unfortunately it’s going to be a month before we get to see Arch with stakes again.

That said: it’s a red flag that his misses weren’t all the same. I tracked his incompletions and here are the ones that were just inaccurate throws (i.e., not DBs disrupting the pass or bad reads):

- 5 yards short on a corner

- 2 yards high on a crosser coming open late (poor pocket movement leads to no throwing base)

- Low on a crosser (Moore should have caught)

- 3 yards high on a slant

- Low on mesh

- Low on quick out

- High and behind on mesh

That’s a big spread. Low accuracy + high variance is a bad combo.

I want to see Sark deploy Wingo like he did with Worthy. Wingo’s YAC ability is our most proven commodity among receivers. I’m not sure that Arch has the skill set (quick game) to run that offense though. He threw 2 WR screens. One to Wingo that was a really nice throw leading him forward. The other to Moore led him into the ground for -3 yards. Those throws need to be nearly automatic or a defense won’t care. Arch wasn’t particularly good at them last year, so the short game issues do seem informative (compared to that first throw which came on one of Arch’s favorite concepts and that he hit multiple times last year, or poor reads that can be fixed with experience like the 4th and 2 handoff or 4th and 3 throw to Livingstone instead of Wingo on a pick play).

That was a lot of negatives, so I’ll say again that it’s too early to panic. Arch did have some nice throws down the field and was an effective runner. I also really liked that triple option-esque screen play to Moore. There’s some fun stuff we can do with Arch. 3 more completions and a couple different decisions on fourth down and it’s a solid effort in a win.

Wingo still seems like the athletic big guy and Moore still looks like a solid WR3. It’s hard to judge them though with Arch’s problems and broadcast angles.

OL

Spoiler

OL exceeded my expectations but OSU didn’t really challenge us much. Patricia seemed content to drop 7, occasionally 8, and force Arch to read the field then check down. Arch had lots of time on those plays. Both of our tackles gave up a pressure/sack. Goosby kicked too far out picking up a stunt and Baker completely blew his assignment on the final 4th and 5. Gave up direct pressure via an unblocked edge. It was one of the few times OSU showed an exotic front and it got him.

Stroh reminded me of true freshman Cole Hutson, but with average play. Hutson was a huge liability and was constantly on the ground because he was off balance. Stroh wasn’t a liability, but he does get too far forward and then DL can throw him forward. That practice clip has gotten some run on here and there was a play on the first drive that was just as bad. I saw two other reps where the DT pulled him forward but they weren’t as egregious. He has balance issues that I imagine defenses will exploit if he keeps putting them on tape. I only noticed him pulling once and he looked pretty slow. Neto rotated in and didn’t really stand out in any way. He did seem more likely to get stonewalled than Stroh. Too early to really have an opinion on one vs. the other.

Even with all those critiques, the OL was way better than I thought they would be. Cohesion seemed really good for week 1 with 4 new starters. There was consistently room in the run game, except in the red zone. Hutson had a couple poor reps down there.

SJSU lost to a Central Michigan team that threw 11 passes and outrushed them by more than 3x (236-75). Offensively, they did throw for 308 but it took them 45 attempts at 53% completion.

This is a bad team that should not score on the Texas first team defense. Hopefully they will rotate lots of young guys and get out of there healthy. I'm sure everyone will be stoked about a bounceback game from Arch but I doubt there will be anything to take from the next three games on that front. Of course he'll feel more comfortable and play cleaner.

if we aren’t mopping the fucking floor talking 45-0 type shit we are in trouble. If we are 28-0 26-13 type bullshit we are super fucked. We need to be hanging 40 plus the next 3 weeks so everyone can rep rep rep rep until it’s muscle memory. Yesterdays bullshit looking fucking offense reminded me too much of 2010 when our lord and savior Gatorade all world Garret Gilbert struggled and our offense looked like shit

We're going to. I'm ripping this from Scipio/Wadlington, but football is pass/fail. What was on the field yesterday would absolutely be enough to wax SJSU 56-3 or whatever. Plenty of shitty Mack/Strong/Herman teams and Sark's 2021 team managed to run up outsized margins against lesser opponents. We've already seen Arch Manning do so with many of the same flaws he exhibited yesterday. You can get away with things against SJSU, UTEP, and SHSU that you can't against Ohio State.

Fuck it's going to be a long month lol

We can definitely learn things the next three weeks, but not many of them would be good.

If Arch presses to make up for a shit outing and struggles to look good against the next few teams it’s gonna be a long season.

Not saying it’s likely, and certainly hoping for a get right performance this weekend.

If you want to get an idea of the tape on that performance. From his viewing of the All 22 and game film it seems the problems were Arch's uncharacteristic poor mechanics, Arch pressing and not processing and releasing quick enough, and Sark being way too damn predictable. Last season after Georgia stomped the offense in Austin several Georgia players said they knew what was coming based on film. This makes it clear OSU knew the same things. If Sark doesn't start changing things up a lot more, and putting in things to punish teams for sitting on his normal stuff, this offense will struggle against well coached defenses with top level talent.
