Nah, NFL is still pretty entertaining. It’s just on too many days now. Give it to me on Sunday, one game on Monday night and the couple Saturdays at end of season. I’ll allow a kickoff game on Thursday to start season if you must.

Thanksgiving?

Question for the history buffs: When’s the last time a U.S. President asked for a sports venue to be named after him? Was it Obama, or are we going all the way back to Lincoln?

Trump just came on as a guest announcer for the Commanders-Lions game.  Good news, the economy is in great shape, and if it isn't it's Biden's fault.  He said some other stupid shit too, like the starting QB for our team (Commanders) needs to stop getting injured.

- Quinn Ewers wearing Trump stuff. Fuck you, man. You should know better.

You got this thread off to an excellent start. I never opened it before because I didn't know how well the subject would be handled. Compliments.

Politics started becoming more like sports back around 1980. On election night, I worked at an airport warehouse, some of the other young men were gathered where I was working were talking about the election. One asked who I would vote for. I was conflicted. "Probably Carter."

"Carter? Man, he's going to lose!"

It was revelatory. It was all about being on the winning side pulling for the winning team. Of course, it became more pronounced over the decades. For GOPS, so many of their voters should sport some kind of jersey. They already have a team hat that they wear like true team supporters everywhere they go.

I, too, find myself ambivalent about US teams. I now hate the U!S!A!  U!S!A! chant. It sounds like a taunt rather than a cheer. "Fucking ashamed." You nailed it.

Ewers wearing that shit bugs me. The subject should not be introduced in any public way in sports. Sadly, again as you note, that ship has sailed.

This shit is real.

I completely forgot the Texas vs Georgia game was today until a few min ago. I didn't even think about a Texas game during the bye week last weekend.

Last year I made game day plans days ahead of time for almost all the games.

Guess when you know you're at war you stop really caring much about small trivial things.

Watching souf Carolina play MAGA central. This video crystallizes why sports are doomed unless fascism is defeated. Sport requires the perception of an even playing field. When power directly interferes in a sporting event, we are left with only athletic pageant.

I read he was unfairly relieved of his duties. That patriot should be one of ICE’s top targets in the transfer portal. He showed tremendous natural aggression toward minorities and just needed less accountability to really shine. Buy stock in this trooper, he’s an up and comer.

Oof she's aging, lost too much weight, but she is by far the sharpest of the Jones clan.

By most accounts, Gene is sharper than Jerruh, and he started with her money.

The TL;DR - FIFA is getting to use the Kennedy Center for $0 rent and making "donations" 😉 to the center for use. FIFA's use has "led to the rescheduling or cancellation of shows and has effectively cost the Center millions of dollars in relinquished rental fees."

For the non-subscribers:

Spoiler

Why FIFA’s 2026 World Cup draw is at the heart of a Kennedy Center controversy

FIFA’s use of the Kennedy Center for next month’s 2026 World Cup draw has become a source of controversy and Senate inquiry in the United States.

Soccer’s global governing body’s agreement with the Center is at the heart of a U.S. Senate committee probe into alleged “cronyism and corruption” at the Washington, D.C., performing arts venue; and of a critical letter sent last week by Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse to the Kennedy Center’s president, Ric Grenell.

The letter cites the Center’s contract with FIFA — which appears to grant FIFA exclusive use of the Center’s Concert Hall and other spaces for a $0.00 rental fee, according to a copy obtained by Senate staff — as the foremost example of mismanagement by Grenell, who was installed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

“The Center,” Whitehouse wrote, “is being looted to the tune of millions of dollars in foregone revenue, cancelled programming, unpaid use of its facilities, and wasteful spending on luxury restaurants and hotels — an unprecedented pattern of self-dealing, favoritism, and waste.”

Grenell responded with a letter of his own and fiery posts on X, in which he disputed the notion that FIFA will use the Kennedy Center for free.

“FIFA has paid millions plus covered all expenses,” Grenell wrote.

A Center spokeswoman, Roma Daravi, told The Associated Press on Nov. 22 that FIFA is donating $2.4 million to the Center and “has also given us sponsorship opportunities separate from their commitments for an additional $5 million.”

Grenell and Kennedy Center officials did not provide written evidence of FIFA’s payments, nor have they explained why FIFA is paying via donation and “sponsorship opportunities” rather than a rental fee.

Whitehouse — leader of the Democratic minority on the Senate’s Environment and Public Works Committee, which oversees buildings owned by the federal government — has asked Grenell to “explain the justification,” produce documents and answer a variety of questions by Dec. 4.

So, the Dec. 5 draw, which is essentially a World Cup kickoff event, looks set to take place against a contentious — and overtly political — backdrop.

What is happening at the Kennedy Center?

The Kennedy Center was, for decades, an apolitical arts center that strived to showcase all types of American culture. But in February, the Trump administration ousted the Center’s chairman, its president and Joe Biden-appointed board members. Its new board, stacked with Trump loyalists, chose Trump as the new chairman and Grenell, a career diplomat and Trump ally, as president.

Trump told reporters he “took over the Kennedy Center” because he “didn’t like what they were showing. We’re going to make sure that it’s good and it’s not going to be woke.” Over the nine months since, ticket sales have reportedly plummeted, but non-art events — such as the American Conservative Union Foundation’s “Christian Persecution Summit” and a vigil for slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk — have come to the Center.

Next up is the World Cup Draw.

Why has the FIFA-Kennedy Center agreement been scrutinized?

FIFA held World Cup draw negotiations with multiple venues in Las Vegas, people familiar with the discussions told The Athletic, but ultimately took the draw to the Kennedy Center at Trump’s suggestion. Trump, after announcing the agreement in August, said: “We will lay out the red carpet.”

The agreement attracted attention when the Center’s contract with FIFA leaked to The Washington Post earlier this month. The Post reported, and documents obtained by Senate staff suggest, that hosting FIFA on short notice has led to the rescheduling or cancellation of shows and has effectively cost the Center millions of dollars in relinquished rental fees.

This angered the arts community because, as Senator Whitehouse wrote, the Kennedy Center’s “statutory mission is to present performing arts (including music, opera, drama, and dance) from the United States and abroad; promote itself as the National Center for the Performing Arts; ensure high-quality, diverse education and outreach programs; provide facilities for civic activities; and maintain a memorial to President [John F.] Kennedy. As a federally chartered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the Center is funded by taxpayer dollars and private philanthropy.”

The FIFA contract and various other agreements, he wrote, “indicate that you have turned the Kennedy Center away from its mission.”

Grenell responded by saying the Senator’s letter was “filled with partisan attacks and baseless accusations.” He wrote that the Kennedy Center’s budget was balanced, and that “we have not cancelled shows.”

Defending the agreement with FIFA specifically, Grenell wrote: “Your focus on simple rental fees is no way to run an institution as diverse as the Kennedy Center. A simple rental fee would not have been enough to cover the magnitude of the event.”

So is FIFA paying to use the Kennedy Center?

The contract — apparently signed in August by 2026 World Cup chief strategy and planning officer Amy Hopfinger, FIFA World Cup chief operating officer Heimo Schirgi and Kennedy Center executive VP Rick Loughery — grants FIFA unfettered access to the Kennedy Center’s Concert Hall from Nov. 24 through Dec. 12, the “exclusive use period.”

And it states: “FIFA 26 agrees to pay Venue the total of $0.00 (i.e., $0.00 per day) for use of the Facility.” It then reiterates: “Venue agrees to provide the Facilities to FIFA 26 free of any charges, for the exclusive use by FIFA 26 for the entire duration.”

FIFA, per the contract, is “responsible for operational costs associated with the delivery of the event including but not limited to production, promotion and catering.” FIFA is also responsible for security. The Kennedy Center, though, must “provide, at its own cost and expense, a sufficient but reasonable number of adequately qualified staff at each of the facilities,” plus utilities and other basic services.

It’s unclear what separate agreements account for the “several million dollars” that Grenell has cited. Daravi told The AP that, in addition to expenses, “when you look at the full picture, it totals $7.4 million to the Kennedy Center.” Neither Grenell nor the Center’s press office responded to emails from The Athletic seeking clarity on what Daravi meant by “sponsorship opportunities” and why FIFA would donate rather than paying a rental fee.

Why would FIFA donate to Kennedy Center?

A FIFA spokesman declined to comment when asked if FIFA is sponsoring or intends to sponsor the Kennedy Center. He also declined to comment on why FIFA would sponsor a center that appears to have little relationship with soccer.

Former Kennedy Center officials, speaking to The Athletic over the past few days, were puzzled by the “donation” and “sponsorship opportunities” in lieu of a rental fee. Larry Wilker, the president from 1991-2000, said the Center never did a deal structured like that when he was in charge.

Independent tax and non-profit finance experts, in both Switzerland and the U.S., also told The Athletic they were unsure why the payment would be made as a donation rather than a rental fee — unless it were coming from a for-profit company, in which case donating, rather than paying for services, would allow for tax deduction.

It’s unclear where, exactly, the payment would be coming from. FIFA is a Zurich-based nonprofit governed by Swiss law. It also owns various subsidiaries, including “FWC2026 US, Inc.,” the World Cup-focused entity registered as a 501(c)(4) nonprofit in the United States. The Kennedy Center is also a nonprofit funded by a mixture of earned revenue (from sources like ticket sales and rentals), private donations and government appropriations. The FIFA spokesman, when asked if FIFA owns any for-profit entities registered in the U.S., again declined to comment.

FIFA’s plan for World Cup Draw, per the Kennedy Center contract

FIFA will stage the draw in the Concert Hall, the Kennedy Center’s largest theatre. Per the contract, it could begin repurposing the 2,465-seat space on Monday, the first day of its exclusive use period. After a National Symphony Orchestra concert this past Sunday, there are no performances scheduled in the hall until Dec. 11.

FIFA will use the Eisenhower Theatre, the Kennedy Center’s third-largest theatre, for overflow seating on the day of the draw. (The second-largest, the Opera House, is reserved for the annual Kennedy Center Honors two days later.)

FIFA has also booked the Terrace Theatre and three galleries for team seminars, the Reach Plaza for its broadcast compound, and several studios, classrooms and pavilions for a media center, according to the contract. There will also be a “green carpet” arrival area and a “legends lounge.” In the days surrounding Dec. 5, there will be a “VVIP dinner” in the Roof Terrace Restaurant; a night-before reception in the 630-foot-long Grand Foyer and other areas; and another reception in the Grand Foyer after the draw.

What has Senator Whitehouse asked of the Kennedy Center?

Whitehouse, in the letter published Thursday, asked Grenell: “What was the process and justification for the Kennedy Center’s agreement with FIFA?”

He then demanded “internal cost estimates, scheduling impacts, and any Board discussions or approvals related to zero-dollar use of the Kennedy Center campus.”

And finally, after asking how this arrangement is “consistent with the Center’s statutory mission,” he told Grenell to “please explain” whether FIFA’s creation of a “Peace Prize” — and speculation that Infantino will give it to Trump on the day of the draw — “factored into discussions or decisions regarding the Kennedy Center’s partnership with FIFA.”

What is Trump’s relationship with Infantino?

The relationship between Infantino and Trump has been warm for many years now. The pair got to know each other during Trump’s first term, when Canada, Mexico and the U.S. were bidding to host the 2026 World Cup and White House support was required.

In early 2020, while introducing Trump to a dinner of CEOs in the Swiss ski resort Davos, Infantino hailed Trump as a “sportsman” and competitor. The pair maintained contact during Trump’s period out of office, and the FIFA president was invited to Trump’s second inauguration this past January.

In the week leading up to the inauguration, Infantino posted about Trump nine times on Instagram and wore a red tie when attending Trump’s pre-inauguration rally. Trump had sent a video message of support which was played during the Club World Cup draw in Miami last December, with his daughter Ivanka and grandson Theo invited to make the ceremonial first pick. Since then, Infantino has appeared in the Oval Office more than any foreign nation’s head of state.

A White House task force, chaired by Trump, was established to oversee federal planning for the World Cup. FIFA has also taken office space in Trump Tower in New York City, while Trump took part in the trophy celebrations when Chelsea won the Club World Cup in July at MetLife Stadium.

Recently, Infantino has publicly defended Trump’s performance as U.S. president. At the America Business Forum in Miami this month, Infantino praised him as a man who “says what many people think” and said he could not understand “negative comments.”

That same day, FIFA announced that it would award an inaugural “Peace Prize” at the World Cup draw. It did not say, even when asked, who had decided to create the award or how a winner would be selected. When Infantino, speaking at the Miami event a few hours after Trump, was asked if the winner had spoken on the same stage earlier in the day, he laughed and said: “Well, on the 5th of December, you will see.”
