Stowers... LBs are going to be tested. They struggled badly vs MSU. Very interested to see what PK does in this game. He generally likes the bend and dont break approach, but this is one of the most efficient offenses in the country. If you give the underneath stuff, they will gladly take it.

I agree. Stowers destroyed us last year in Nashville. Milroe throwing a pick six on literally the first offensive snap didn’t help. Pavia did a James Street 1969 vs Arkansas impression late on a 4th and 1, play action fake and rainbow shot to Stowers for a teal dagger TD, then Pavia ran out the clock driving on us. If Vandy gets you bent over a barrel with possession late, just shut your eyes and think of better days under DKR.  Maybe the Texas D will shake some turnovers loose.  Pavia turned it over 2x in the red zone in Tuscaloosa a few weeks ago.

Since when is there no love for The Beach Boys?  As long as we win I expect it to be packed. Might not be the same as 30 years ago, hell there’s only one original that plays with them still but it’s a classic hugely influential band.

The Beach Boys are still awesome.

hopefully we can establish the run game.
Vandy has real on the field leadership and a good HC. I expect this to be a close game. I’d like to see less Baxter and Wingo but it is what it is. We cannot control “the type of football” sark wants to us to play.

Hope we win.

Yeah, they were.  Its almost a cover band now.  Just think... their first hit was 63 years ago.  Their first hit is collecting social security.   Man, I don't know how old you are but if UT had rolled out Al Jolson when I was in college, I would be WTFing all the way to watch Peter Gardere beat OU.

I love the Beach Boys.  They were unqualified greatness.

Mike Love is an insufferable prick for non-CR reasons, and is extremely distasteful to many people for CR reasons.

Dennis was the only one that surfed.  Brian was a poser.  Not a fan so compare it to Rick Springfield after the Florida game last year.  Cringeworthy.

stupid stat pulled up, because a half the TDs vs the p4 came in the last game. The real crisis was the 5 Tds in the first 4 games  (1 vs OSU, 3 Florida, 1 vs OU, 1 vs UK) vs the P4.  Only CJ would call it a crisis AFTER the offense scores 5 Tds in game. I believe there are only 10 offensive TDs in the 5 P4 games.

aggy offense is rolling with Reed as QB. Most of his passes are short screen shit and then letting the athletes get yards after the catch. Zone read and his being a good runner also helps. Point is, Sark doesn't need fancy route trees and shit. Quick throws and trust your receivers to run after the catch. One of our best pass plays in MSU game was a lateral swing pass to a motioning Wingo and he almost took it to the house.

Keep it fucking simple, Sark!

Two problems with this plan this year... Because this is exactly what we did last year. People complained about Ewers average depth of target, but it was because we were getting the ball into the hands of playmakers quick and letting them make plays.

First problem: Arch is not as good as Quinn was on ball placement on screens and bubbles. Sometimes his throws are high or behind instead of leading the WR forward into their stride.

Second problem: up until this week, our WRs and OL sucked ass at blocking, so getting those quick bubble and tunnel screens to be successful is really difficult without good blockers.

I'm not sure how that's "crisis mode". That's mainly some cherry-picked nonsense. Texas hasn't played with a lot of leads in those games.

I think a lot of folks on this board are underestimating the challenge the Texas offense will have without Arch under center.

We’ve all been pretty harsh on Arch, a lot of it deserved. However the play calling and schemes have not done a good  job of recognizing the OL and WR issues and putting Arch in a better position to succeed.

As Sark tries to adjust to a more short passing game, he’s going to try and grind out a win with the run and short passes. The Vanderbilt defense will know this and will stuff the line of scrimmage. With our OL issues, it could get very rough to score points.

Conversely, not having Taaffe making defensive calls and recognizing the plays pre snap will make the defense more vulnerable.

Every one of us should be tickled with an overtime 13-10 win, with the vaunted Vanderbilt QB fumbling away the game at the 5 yard line.

I'm not far off from this. I think the best shot we have is to score our opening 2 possessions and play with a lead all afternoon. Scoring is going to be tough to come by for this offense by the 2nd half IMO.

Counterpoint: I think the difference between playing in Lexington and Starkville vs. DKR makes up for a lot of that. Especially with maybe the best ST unit in the country.

I concur. We are all very excited to see what Caldwell can do, but he better be good at escaping the pocket and feeling pressure. Anyone that plays QB behind this line is gonna have major trouble. I think its gonna be super tight but I think our defense wins the day. I dont think the national media or our fanbase is giving them the credit where its due.

Also, counterpoint, the offense might look average and have some sustainable drives with a QB who has the ability to get the ball out quickly, accurately, and not fucking shot-putting it at receivers feet.... Maybe not as boom/bust (mainly bust), but more consistent, which should help the defense, the OL, and the offense as a whole in the 4th Quarter.

Also sitting, for a week, another bye, and getting his cabeza rearranged, may end of being a very good thing for Arch.

Lot will depend on the game plan Sark dials up. I think this offense found something vs MSU. I thought that after OU, but that gameplan was quickly throw into the garbage after the game. Pass pro got better in the 4Q. Lot of that was probably MSU tiring, but we shall see. I am not high on the Vanderbilt defense. I think a lot of their counting stats are based on the efficiency and snail pace their offense runs. I do share some concern the Vandy offense will control the clock and possessions will be limited. The big hope is Sark comes out like last year and dices Vandy up, before they make adjustements.

I just don't think the OU gameplan was ever going to be repeatable against other opponents. The run blocking was still bad. Wisner just had himself a game. We've tried more outside zone since then, and we haven't been able to generate anything against teams not named OU. The MSU 4th quarter game plan may be more repeatable.

I think one of the keys with OU was the overaggressive front seven. Tre forced them to commit to a gap and backed out and went further out or somewhere else

OU also got so much penetration that it created lanes for him to run in at different levels. Against a more disciplined or even just slower/less dominant front, that space isn't going to exist.

we barely ran OZ vs UK, actually barely ran the ball. It did have an opportunity for TD on 2nd OZ carry, but Clark missed the read. OZ is pretty solid vs fronts that are stunting and blitzing. The emphasis on shorter routes and OZ/duo were a good start, but like I said Sarl quickly went away from that. The MSU might be, but we shall see. Arch came into the MSU game top 15 in straight drop back situations. Guys like Baber, Homer, and Scip have mentioned this for a while. We finally saw a big dose in the 4Q vs MSU. That is a long way to say that a lot of people saw what Arch was good at, but Sark had other ideas.

I only went to the OSU game but I wondered who Caldwell was watching him zipping it in warm up, (looking better than Arch, frankly) until I realized it must be him. I'm counting on Vandy being befuddled at first, not knowing what he can do (while Sark does) and he gains enough confidence to push through when they start figuring him out.

I’m so sick of all these stupid ass stats - just fucking win. I don’t care if we have no yards on offense and defense sucks balls. Win all the games like that and I’m happy. 2-0 games all the way to the championship. Fuck all these stats

Vandy weaknesses are OL and secondary.  Their defensive front is nails and Pavia covers for a lot of the OL woes.

I think Vandy will give up the short balls to see if we will take it. They’ve really been there all year.
Once they adjust, things could really slow down and get hairy if we haven’t scored enough TDs from it, unless Caldwell can hit a few long balls to back them off.
They aren’t athletic enough to stop the run and the intermediate game before giving up too many points along the way.

Caldwell's strength, from the small TX sample size and from the posters who followed his previous squad, is in the quick developing passes that dont require robust line protection.

I don't want to know what a loss to Vandy, especially at home, feels like. Please don't let that awful reality come to fruition.

My brother in Christ, I don't know if you're a newcomer to Texas football or what, but it was less than four years ago that a 2-10 Kansas team broke its 21 game FBS losing streak in DKR, and they came into the game having not even played a FBS team within one score on the year.

Vanderbilt is a 7-1 SEC championship game contender. Texas may win this game, Texas may lose this game, but it will not remotely compare to that.

Speaking as a mere spectator who doesn't film reporters in the bathroom, the short-medium passing game can set a foundation for the offense in modest doses but can't be all that Texas relies on.  The offense will have to find something else that works to keep the Vandy LBs and safeties honest.

Caldwell can write his name into Texas history if he can lead this offense to victory.  Maybe he can use his legs a few times to sustain enough drives to rest the defense and put enough on the board to stress the Vandy.

I'm a dumbass and, therefore, an optimist before every season and game.  So, my untechnical optimism tells me the defense will put a fence around Pavia and get some hits in early, the defense will bend and not break, and big, stupid hope incoming... Moseley and Caldwell will have a rapport from the start, and Baxter will be productive enough to keep Wisner fresh.  Niblett will do something spectacular for a fourth game in a row.

Don’t forget the back up walk on tight end catching the winner

If Caldwell steps in and drops dimes to the tune of 275 plus yards and long TD passes. It’s going to be a fun ass few weeks of controversy

We've been begging for Matthew Caldwell to get a shot. Hopefully he can get the ball out quick and hit some open receivers on slants and out routes. From his limited sample size it appears that he doesn't wait for receivers to come open before throwing it.

Me too. Lefau is ahead of schedule already with is total tackles, and just one shy of his sack, but Ant Hill is way down on all of his stats. Like, unless he doubles his tackles in the next 4 games, adds 5.5 more sacks, and another forced fumble, he will have regressed significantly.

This is what bothers me about the D this year, and it goes with dropping Simmons into coverage. It makes no sense. It's not only hindering the defense, but them as well. Simmons would also have to double hi tackles in the next 4 games just to break even, but his sack count is ahead if they allow him to be himself. He has 9 sacks last year, and he has 7 so far. I suspect he'll hit the 10 mark, but I don't expect him to become superman. I don't know what Sellers does or has done with him, but it hasn't been working. We need for our D to play as a unit and let them all do what they're best at.

This makes perfect sense when you look at the raw talent on each roster. The intangibles and experience are what make Vandy good. But let's not act for a single second like the outcome of this game has anything to do with how Vandy plays. If we play well, we will win. They could play their best game and they will still lose if we just play to our capabilities.

I'm not sure how that would generate controversy. Arch had like 340 passing and 4 total TDs last week.

You are absolutely correct.  One of the most obvious exceptions being the big swing pass to Wingo.  The very first thing I noticed was that the ball was perfectly placed to turn Wingo upfield, in stride, at full speed.  That small detail makes the difference between 50yds and 4yds.
