why come we can’t kick the ambassador out?  I’m sitting here in DC staring at the Russian flag at the ambassadors residence three buildings Down.

It's like you're not even capable of walking by the embassy repeatedly yelling "russkaya svin'ya" repeatedly.  They need to hear "Russian pig" everywhere they go, or even when they DON'T leave the place.

I remember reading a few years back that Ukraine could cut their natural gas use a ton if they had the ability to regulate heat but most dwellings the Soviet era heating was either on or off, so maybe they haven’t?

Not just Ukraine... I can tell you from experience that 1930s buildings in Italy are the same thing.  I can think of a few frozen nights staying with my aunts and uncles.   Nighttime?  Gas off.

I don't hear much from my kid, who is over there clad in camo, but what I hear can be summarized as "groundhog day, slowly going insane. But we're doing good work."

Fuck Russia.

The parent/family supply chain is getting ramped up to provide anything not available locally, or Army supplied.  A few hundred bottles of Tabasco sauce might be a good idea.

I am always good to chip in for an airlift of spicy comestibles to those who are stuck in a land of bland cuisine.

Not to getting all tinfoil hat here, but is it possible that the sudden cutoff of oil/gas from the pipelines is due to the fact that all the sabotage happening in Russia has damaged enough of the pumping infrastructure that they were going to have to tell Europe that they were not going to have to meet demand expectations due to infrastructure issues?

Is it better to cut them off from a position of strength than to admit you are not able to meet demand because of sabotage/the Ukrainian army?

So to put in Surmy terms it would be like kicking out the hooker by saying he’s an ugly skank instead having to admit you can’t get it up.

Timing is interesting.

Heck, toss this into the mix - it got lost in the shuffle, but Germany mentioned this morning that they are close to finding alternatives to Russian oil within days, and then the stuff with Poland came out.

This was mentioned in passing in some tweets, but they are making a concentrated effort to move to NATO-standard weaponry.

https://www.ukrinform.net/rubric-polytics/3468250-ukraine-transferring-its-army-to-nato-weapons-kuleba.html

Ukraine has entered a fundamentally new phase – transferring the Armed Forces to NATO arms.

This was stated by Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba during a video feed on Facebook, Ukrinform reports.

"We have entered a completely new phase, which even two months ago no one considered… We have entered a fundamentally new phase that no one even dreamed of – transferring the Armed Forces of Ukraine to NATO weapons, to the NATO standard. And this is already happening," he said.

Quote

Kuleba noted that it all started with single steps and decisions, but President Volodymyr Zelensky was able to convince U.S. President Joseph Biden that it was time to make the move.

"Howitzers came in first, but this is just the beginning. Much more will come. And this is a historic moment, this is a historic turning point," the head of Ukrainian diplomacy stressed.

Some will see that as an effort to join NATO in the future, but the reality is that in the short term, it's all about getting newer/better NATO hardware, because the old Soviet stuff...is old.

So, like Ukraine, without a Navy, sunk the flagship Moskva and additionally took back control over a very strategic island without a single boot on the ground?

Diplomatic protocols and such.  I'm pretty sure we had a Japanese ambo here all through WW2.

No--the ambassador communicates the declaration of war and asks for his and the embassy staff's passports.  They then leave as quickly as possible (but they're given safe passage to get home).

The result is that during war, we have no direct line of communication with the country(ies) against which we are at war.  So when we want to communicate a peace offer or a surrender demand, we have to do so through the "good offices" of some neutral third party.  In the European Theater, that was usually Sweden.

In the Pacific Theater, the Japanese had hopes that the Soviet Union would act as an intermediary (the Soviet Union had entered into a nonaggression pact with Japan in 1941 and remained neutral until August 9, 1941).  But that obviously didn't work out for them.  So their qualified acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration and the subsequent negotiations were conducted through the Swiss.

Want to know why so many officers are dying?

Rob Lee: "I'm a little wary about drawing too many strong conclusions from this war so far because there is a lot we don't know. I think the level of intelligence sharing by the US to support Ukrainian targeting probably doesn't have a precedent in military history."

Iwo Jima - Americans had 6,000 killed, Japanese had around 20,000 killed (granted, they didn't have much more), Battle of the Bulge had around 19,000 Americans killed, Germans had probably around 30,000 killed (records are spotty), and the Battle of the Bulge had a shit-ton more troops.

Battle of the Bulge - 16 December had around 230,000 American troops (Germans around 405,000), 24 December had around 540,000 Americans, 2 January had over 700,000.

Meanwhile in 2022, Russians are having problems reconstituting fucking battalions.

What’s Russia gonna do? Start another front in Moldova? Fly in more troops via Ukraine or NATO airspace?

Some FAFO energy going on here

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-61235301

The Russian government has accused the UK of "provoking" Ukraine into attacking Russian territory. Russia's defence ministry said it was ready to hit "decision-making centres" in Kyiv should such attacks occur.

The presence of Western advisers at such centres might not affect its decision to retaliate, it added.

Quote

In a statement quoted by the Interfax news agency, the Russian defence ministry said: "We would like to stress that the direct provoking by London of the Kyiv regime into such activities [attacking Russian territory], should there be an attempt to realise them, will immediately lead to our proportional response."

The ministry also said Russian armed forces were ready to "deliver retaliatory strikes using long-range high-accuracy weaponry" against "centres taking relevant decisions" in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. "The advisers from among the subjects of one of the Western countries that are located in Ukrainian decision-making centres in Kyiv will not necessarily be a problem when Russia decides to take retaliatory action," the ministry said.

Probably discussed a few days, and a few hundred pages ago.  We're selling a buncha tanks to Poland.  And not those stripped-down shitboxes we sell everyone else.  Nope, Poland is getting the King Ranch version; the M1A2 SEPv3.  The best armor, the best optics and best fire control.

Polish Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak on Tuesday signed a deal worth about $4.75 billion to buy 250 M1A2 Abrams SEPv3 from the United States.

“We are strengthening the Polish military, and we are deterring a potential aggressor,” Błaszczak was quoted in a statement released by the ministry.

Deliveries are to begin this year, with 28 tanks to be procured to the country’s armed forces. In addition to the tanks, the contract also comprises a technical support and logistics package, as well as training and ammunition for the tanks, according to the ministry.

I'm sure it's been discussed, but why are we not building a gargantuan LNG terminal in Bremerhaven or Hamburg like, yesterday?

https://www.spglobal.com/commodityinsights/en/market-insights/latest-news/natural-gas/040622-political-will-can-lead-to-accelerated-lng-import-terminal-deployment-gie

Europe can deploy new LNG import infrastructure far more quickly than in the past when there is the "political will" to do so, a senior official from industry group Gas Infrastructure Europe said April 6.

GIE deputy secretary general Roxana Caliminte, speaking during a Eurogas-organized webinar, also said it would be important for Europe to lock in long-term LNG supply agreements to guarantee imports.

"We are working in very fast-paced times. We've got to be careful to do things right," Caliminte said.

Countries across Europe are currently rushing to secure new LNG import infrastructure as they look to cut Russian pipeline imports, with plans being made to realize numerous projects -- both old and new -- in record time.

Most of the plans are for floating LNG import facilities -- known as FSRUs (floating storage and regasification units) -- which can be installed more quickly than onshore, permanent import terminals.

"Germany, Italy, France, Poland, Greece, the Netherlands -- they are betting their best cards on this infrastructure," Caliminte said.

She said that it usually takes three-to-five years to build an onshore LNG terminal. But, she said, when there is the "political will" this time frame can be reduced.

In the case of FSRUs, the time frames are shorter, and can be shortened still, she said.

"FSRUs are a very flexible and quick option to bring more LNG to Europe. It can take as little as 18-24 months. But today we are seeing an accelerated process -- it would take up to half of the initial timing at 12-18 months," Caliminte said.

"Where there is a will, there is a way."

Germany is planning to deploy three FSRUs in the near future, while Italy has plans to install two new FSRUs this year.

The Netherlands has signed a deal to deploy an FSRU at Eemshaven this year, while France, Estonia and Latvia also hope to realize new FSRU projects.

"We need to ensure a fast-track approval process for LNG import terminal projects," Caliminte said. "Member states have to act very quickly and be willing to go beyond business as usual."

Because they showed some massive balls and emptied their entire stockpile of T-shit for Ukraine. They deserve to get the best as a replacement AND they are right on Russia's border so they can buttfuck them if the stupid Russkies start anything.

This explains why there has been a collective meh on the Russian gas cut off.

Stalin got good intelligence too. He refused to believe it at times. We're giving info to people that trust it. They are acting on it. There ain't no way the Ukes are getting lucky on some of these hits. They KNEW.

Keep feeding them boys. They're getting bigger.
