But in America, they had food to eat. Didn’t have to run through the jungle and scuff up their feet.

Let me tell you a little about myself, I'm a College Man and VERY wealthy...

I had lunch with my 20 YO daughter today.  She's a junior at UT.  I told her about this Florida curriculum, which she hadn't heard about, and I pointed out some of the numbers I posted earlier in this thread.

Her response?  "Shit, Dad, even a large fraction of the 'emancipated' slaves had to work off their debt as sharecroppers.  These people are nuts."

I mean, a college junior knows more about American history than those who are trying to rewrite it.  (That's probably wrong, they KNOW the truth, they just want to bury it.)

Despite the fact that I've posted many videos of her band, no pics.  I did post a photo of my burger on the burger thread, though.

@jimmyjazz Either of you got a link to it? I'd love to hear it again but am too lazy to go back digging through this thread. TIA

His desperation to get out from under Trump's shadow, and his desperation in general, is almost breath-taking, but it's almost understandable - he'll be out of office by the time 2027/2028 rolls around, unless he's willing to go back and run for a House seat in 2026 (and there's no guarantee he could unseat an incumbent Republican in Florida).

At least with Abbott you kind of get it - he would be almost 71 in 2028, and nobody is going to vote for a 71 year-old in a wheelchair, not when there's going to be a shit-ton of Republican candidates who are 20-30 years younger than him.

The part I don't get is that DeSantis is still young.  Trump is working to destroy him with the MAGA crowd, and it'd be in his best interest to step back, get a House seat, make noise in Congress, and then make another run.  Then again, demographics maybe working more heavily against the GQP than a lot of us expected, and those swing states that Trump lost to Biden mostly likely are done being swing states and will be solidly blue come 2028 or 2032, especially if a lot of (R)s keep moving elsewhere.

He is stupid and his wife wants desperately to be the First Lady while she's still young enough to pull off the Tacky Kennedy cosplay.

How long until they start figuring there should be reparations for all that training those fine white families bestowed on those base slaves?

White people, and in particular white southerners, have suffered long enough. They gave everything! Think of those who died in service to their slaves, to protect their fundamental, human right to teach and confer benefits unto them!

We went to the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis a few weeks back. The first exhibit (while you’re waiting for the intro film) is about the history of the slave trade. It has life-size sculpted figures huddled in chains and recorded sounds of cries of agony. It left me shook - and Desantis should be forced to sit in there for a while and take it in.

Hell he should have to watch ROOTS

Hmm, very concerning. Perhaps Team Desantis could include more Nazi imagery into their campaigns to placate them?

It's mind-blowing.  I mean, it's utterly mind-blowing.  "OK, let's all acknowledge slavery was horrible . . . BUT".

No.  No "buts".  Disallowed.  It was horrible, period.  This incessant need to ferret out perceived positive kernels of corn in an A&M bonfire-sized pile of fecal waste is offensive beyond belief.  That said, here we are, and the base will lap it up.

so slaves were able to 'rise above' and 'overcome' their circumstances?? huh.

here i thought it took the bloodiest conflict this nation has ever seen and 600K+ deaths and decades of violent reconstruction and Jim Crow laws.

well good for them. i'm glad Florida's children will learn this nuanced position.

Kind of feels like a trial balloon. Like six months from now we'll be hearing on Fox, "Don't listen to those woke libs who claim that slavery was some awful experience...."

Posted

Look, those slaves just didn't have what it takes to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps and strike out on their own. So the people "housing them" had to offer them some sort of skills that could be used later after they finally stopped mooching off the kindness of others.

Yup, I mentioned that upthread (or somewhere).  New drummer to replace my daughter.  "Sludge" was a terrible name in the first place, it didn't reflect their music at all.

Someone should give the Maxi Pad treatment to DeSantis.  I have a friend that once wrote an exceptional song about our favorite Texas senator but don't think it has seen the light of day, yet.

Sludge was a confusing name... this seems to work better.  Also, saw a band called Curl on Saturday night indoors at Mohawk.  So absurdly loud.  I imagine Die Spitz is a similar experience in that tiny room.

"Instruction includes how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit."

This is like someone saying, "Yes, that 13 year old girl was brutally gang raped but now she has a beautiful baby and a monthly welfare check."

Inside?  Yeah, a little loud, but they really don't bring it as much as you might think.  Pretty small kit and guitar amps.  The sound guy can mostly keep it all under control.

Such an unbelievably vapid and inch deep way of offering examples of the resiliency of the enslaved. If that was truly the objective there are a myriad of stories to use as narrative devices, not this laughable "John Henry was a blacksmith therefore he was not a victim" even though he couldn't monetize that blacksmithing skill in any way whatsoever nor did he have any autonomy in exercising said skill. And another thing, can we talk about this childish bastardization of the concept of victimhood and this incessant need to not refer to actual victims of atrocities, as victims. Where is the virtue in this?
