Texas DPS documents show Baca has been arrested by Austin police, UT police and Travis County deputies at least 10 times for misdemeanors years ago. Now he's charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

This piece of shit has been arrested 10 times. Our justice system keeps releasing assholes like him back on the streets to commit more crimes until eventually they do something so bad the justice system HAS to put them away. It's like we are just waiting for these assholes to eventually stab/shoot someone. Fuck all this bullshit.

Amazing how they keep the homeless out of Pemberton, Tarrytown, and Travis Heights, though.

There was a time when the citizens of Burnet rd between 183 and 45th Street were safe from evil due to the vigilance of a single man: The Burnet Rd Vigilante!

@Radical Larry and @NorthLoop may remember...

There was also a lot og OG 4loko consumed during that time so memories could be hazy.

Then former Mayor Adler will start a non profit that the city will fund in order to get homeless into “cooling shelters”. Once he gets the funding they’ll buy some hotels that sit vacant for the next 10 years and then sell them to the city for 3x the price.

Son, Adler aint the mayor no more

Good thing we got those hotels no one can stay in.

Yeah....recently sat in on a presentation on the topic, and the models that work.  What's infuriating is that these models aren't a secret.  They are out there, known, and widely discussed.  Oh, and they all have a heavy dose of "get people without housing into housing, with coordinated access to services to help them stay that way."  No, it's not perfect....but it yields significant improvement.  Austin, on the other hand, continues to double and triple down on a strategy that is the worst of all worlds.  It's truly maddening, and I don't get it.

I'm the guy who had a swat team at my house two days in a row on May 3rd and May 4th. Yes, I'm the person who shot someone on the 4th. I was not arrested that day. I thought it might be useful and interesting to people on here if I filled in the blanks about the whole situation, plus I really could use any kind of help or advocacy with my ongoing battles, particularly about my dogs. The events of my dogs being taken and the shooting are absolutely related, and there is an underlying connection between all of it (there's more). To be clear, I have 8 dogs. Yes that's a lot but I have nearly 5 acres with a lot of purpose built features. At the time there were an additional 5 dogs here who were abandoned by someone no longer here, and I had six eight week old puppies who were mostly spoken for and about to go to their new homes. I have litters about once every 2 years and my dogs are in quite high demand. I'm not a backyard breeder, I just carry on this line I've had all my life. The five abandoned dogs I was hoping to find someone with a ranch or homestead and a coyote problem because they are such a beautiful family and I couldn't bear to separate them. They are very good at keeping coyotes away and they will mind and not hurt livestock. The deputy lied to obtain a warrant to seize my dogs. It was a planned deal they had been working on for a while . Apparently my style of living, which has been the norm here on the Bend since forever - I've been here 25 years - isn't popular with a lot of people these days, and it's been assumed , apparently, that I must be neck deep in organized crime to be able to live here the way I do currently. Actually I'm pretty frugal and invest well is about all. Nonetheless, they were so confident they were opening up a honeypot of magical Easter eggs (for police) that they threw a lot of caution to the wind in how they approached this (can you say 'pretext stop' but insert 'seizure of all your dogs ' in place of the word ',stop'? I'm having a terrible time fighting to get my dogs back. I was prevented from going to the hearing where I would have gotten them back (I was arrested at the security checkpoint at the courthouse, then given a default for failure to appear) . Then after 5 days in solitary (despite having paid 20 thousand dollars cash before going there, for my bond) I filed a motion to set aside judgement and reset my hearing and was remarkably denied this due process essential. So now I'm in county court with no attorney (not for want of trying , this is a civil matter with lots of very serious outcomes attached and it's literally unprecedented and has a lot of confusing factors about it. Anyway there's a lot to tell, especially about the horrific way my dogs were seized and how that could even happen. Ask me absolutely anything.

They aren't homeless camps, they are "tent communities".

Quote

Police are investigating a homicide near the North Austin YMCA, the Austin Police Department announced early Monday.

Just before 3:30 a.m., police arrived to the 1000 block of Rundberg Lane after a 911-caller reported someone was injured during a physical alternation, according to video of a news briefing from KXAN.

Officers learned the altercation occurred at a tent community nearby

Yeah, the new terminology should take the sting off the murders.

We used to camp at YMCA tent communities as kids.  And sure somebody got shivved.  But don't start no stealing s'mores shit, Jason...won't be no stealing s'mores shit, Jason!

Watson has been bizarrely quiet about all this considering how much business money he raised off finally dealing with this issue.

You know it's funny how the police allows a hobo jungle to persist in any wooded area within a half mile of Rundberg and Lamar, or even right next to the Town Lake Branch of the YMCA, but you better not so much as put your ruck down for a break at the Johnson Creak trailhead at Enfield and Winstead. One of life's impenetrable mysteries, I suppose.

I don't think Lakeway/Lake Travis will ever be able to gentrify fast enough to eliminate the Hudson Bend white trash.

That area is something else... I remember looking at homes in the Apache Shores area... some really cool houses were for sale... nice, modern houses, great views... next to a home mechanic shop or an impromptu scrap boat yard.

Hudson Bend and Lakeway... not Austin's fault.

Trying to shift this problem into a classist argument is weak, IMO.   The people who pay the most taxes, pay the largest bribes, or otherwise wield influence will get a little extra attention from the government when they ask for it.  It works that way everywhere in the world, always has and always will.  It doesn't matter if your society is capitalist, socialist, or fucking anarchist.  Someone will have more things than other people, and with that comes the ability to buy influence.   You may as well shout at the moon to fall out of the sky if you think this will ever change.  We can't naively navigate our way out of this problem by complaining about rich people, even if it's the de facto argument to solve all problems lately.

My solution?  Hire the homeless to run Austin Energy, Austin Water, and even ABIA.  It will provide steady income, airconditioned office space during the day, and they certainly can't do worse than the clowns that have been running things have done thus far.  Why not give it a shot?  If they do a good job we can elect them to city council and the mayor's office and really get things cooking around here.

Lakeway has its MAGA problems but it’s hardly anything like Hudson Bend trailer and RV parks.

Yeah, but most places in Austin are starting at  around $15, so they only need to work 70 something hours. Damn, people are so lazy.

I saw an article today that said that someone making minimum wage needs to work 147 hours per week to afford the average 1B apartment in Austin. Obviously the average isn't skewed towards the minimum wage earner, but damn, there's a housing affordability problem in Austin that needs to be addressed before no one in the service, public safety or public education sectors can afford to live in the city they work in.

Dumb story.  Anybody other than a pimply teenager working for minimum wage has bigger problems than being able to afford an apartment on their own.

Dumb response. In Austin, you'd have to make $26.65/hour at 40 hours/week to afford a 1-bedroom apartment. How many posts do you have complaining about homelessness in this town?

I doubt there is anyone in Austin making minimum wage.

He'd have to work 59 hours/week to afford a 1-bedroom apartment in Austin at that wage.

I mean, you can bitch about homelessness until you're blue in the face, but the minimum wage has been $7.25 in Texas for what, a decade and a half?

Let me know when people have as much desire to raise it as they do to eradicate the homeless population.

No doubt. Such a great point. I read all these sad woe-is-me tales about poor people and homelessness, and I’m just like “Did any of these stupid fuckers ever think to make more money? Duh!”

I don't think the homeless are exactly the hirable type. Most jobs require a person not to be high out of their fucking minds and/or batshit crazy.

But yes, housing is too fucking expensive in Austin. We should build more affordable housing, but only on the east side, please. I keed, I keed.

You're talking about the long-term homeless and likely correct.

But there are a lot of short-termers who, for whatever reason (e.g., escaping an abusive husband, job loss, or some other crisis), lose their home, have to live in a car, couch surf (if they have that option), or whatever. When that happens, they lose a permanent address which then makes it more difficult to find a decent wage like, say $26/hr, and then can't find a 1-bedroom apartment.

Affordability is absolutely a major problem because:

It’s easier to lump them all together as crazy drug addicts who aren’t people and should be rounded up and exterminated. Instead of seeing a large chunk of them as victims of both circumstances you mentioned above and a massive COL crisis

$26/hr for an entry level position in any company in this town is extremely hard to come by and any that even approach that will require a college degree, at minimum.  Probably not gonna have much overlap with anyone in the "experiencing homelessness" category.
