If one comes forward, they'll undoubtedly get support from the likes of Icono...uhhh... @Macklemore and his Tucker-loving brethren.

So are we starting to think the third-party option is a real thing?

He is publicly shit-talking Republican leaders, both state and national, and he seems to have some major grievances with Abbott in particular.  He is absolutely trying to hurt Abbott with Republicans, which could actually hurt a bit in the general if MAGA types stay home.

He seems to have taken a really hard stance against vaccinations.  Really hard.  All Mitch was saying was "hey get the vaccine" and Huffines ain't having none of that.  This is the kind of "True Believer" stuff I'm talking about.  Being publicly angry when a (R) politician is encouraging people to get vaccinated is...weird.

He has Trump people publicly backing him, and his views line up with a theoretical MAGA party.

Fox News has turned against Abbott.

If Huffines wins, he would try to dump property taxes, which would make him and his buddies a shitload of money.  Clear financial motives there, that he doesn't hide.

But....there is no way his current internal polling shows he will win his primary, and while he's picking up a few hundred new followers a day, there's not much social media engagement there.  Does anybody here think Huffines would be doing this if he didn't think he'd financially or politically benefit in some way?

So if the election were held today and Abbott or Nameless Democrat wins, Huffines gets absolutely nothing, either financially or politically.

Which leaves the question:  How can Huffines profit from this?

As long as he is running as a Republican, his only power is scaring Abbott in the primaries somehow (which he is apparently doing), but that power goes away when the primary is done, and Abbott hypothetically tries to swing back to the middle.   But if Huffines somehow swung Trump's endorsement away from Abbott, that would definitely A) Bolster Huffines's ego, his campaign coffers, and his potentially trying to split the field, and B) Freak Abbott the fuck out.

If Huffines makes noises about running third (MAGA) party, that would scare the fuck out of Abbott, so in theory Huffines's people could put it out there to Abbott's people that Abbott better do some things that Huffines wants, or Huffines runs third party and peals off 10% of the voters and gives the Dems the election.  In Huffines's mind, it may not matter how angry Abbott and the TRP are, because he's publicly accused Abbott of being cucked by Biden, etc., and sees Abbott as no different than a Democrat.

But what would Huffines get by giving up running third party against Abbott?  No way Texas Republicans roll back property taxes and go with a state income or a major boost to the sales tax, so there's got to be something else there.

Figure out what Huffines is ultimately trying to get and that will answer your question.  He is actively trying to poison the well for Abbott in the general election, so something is going on, whether it's personal or financial. So the answer to your question is...

No, didn't you hear that he went to church and prayed and realized he was wrong? Now he doesn't want to shoot immigrant children himself, he wants federal agents to drop them off in the middle of the Mexican desert with no food or water. That's way more humane and completely acceptable according to his faith.

Just to humor a policy discussion-- what are the implications of dropping property taxes and making them much lower like other states (or dropping them altogether, which seems to be Huffines red-meat campaign promise, but likely impossible?)?

I ask because on the surface, that seems like a great thing for people who pay (and gripe) about property taxes in Texas and wish to pay less (or as low as legally possible).

Other states seem to have low property taxes, but they have a state tax (boo). Could we do away with premium property taxes and increase the sales tax maybe?

If this sort of discussion is out of place on this particular thread and this is more for jockeying on who's going to be who in the zoo, then please disregard.

The downside is the government goes bankrupt unless an income tax is instituted.

I thought that might be the case, which is why I think if you reduce or make property tax nominal, we need to increase an existing tax (sales/consumption tax) or levy new taxes that don't exist today to counterbalance. I'm assuming Huffines is just trying to sell the pipe dream of abolishing property taxes to incite the passions of people without being practical and a realistic option.

Like every Republican before him in my lifetime he is fucking lying to get elected. Period. End of story. He's not going to abolish shit. He's not going to secure shit. He's a lying shitgibbon whose 15 minutes should have been up a long time ago. But if he succeeds in weakening the R's chances of retaining the governorship, then by all means, troll away!

Agreed.

But running on a platform that is not realistic but emotionally feels good to people seems to be the non-centrist approach.

I think there is something else nefarious behind Huffines's property tax issue.   A significant amount of those taxes fund education.  Remember which party consistently tries to either gut public education, return us to the days where creationism is the scientific basis for life and bring God (*the Christian one) back into the classroom.  Suburban and rural (at least the kind he's appealing to) districts see those kind of things as "good".    The suburban families might get a carrot tossed their way with vouchers for private/religious schools (how this is paid, who knows) and the rural God-fearing  voters might get that horrible evolution and "science" out of the classroom.

And if we do gut property taxes, guess which districts will still be able to fund the programs like sports and performing arts?   It won't be poor or minority districts.

You have a state full of natural resources which looks and functions like a third world country.  You default on things or go bankrupt.  Texas is already a bottom 10 state in terms of infrastructure (roads, dams, bridges, effective and efficient travel systems).  Texas is below average state in terms of their educational system ranking anywhere from 28th to 36th in education for children.  Texas is often ranked in the bottom 10 as far as healthcare by state.  Texas is one of the 10 worst state's in wealth disparity by many rankings.  Much of this is because of the state's tax structure is abhorrent and frankly, stupid.  If you're not going to have a state income tax, and you want to reduce or eliminate property taxes, then increasing sales taxes (which are generally considered a recessive tax) is only exacerbating all the problems with Texas has with it's state's fiscal policy.

In other words, it's would be the fiscal platform of folks who don't understand economics.

So....the Republican party.

Wonder if the Mogwai's raging tweets spurred Abbott into a little action.

https://www.texastribune.org/2021/09/24/texas-property-tax-bill/

Quote

With the renewed backing of Gov. Greg Abbott, legislation to cut property tax rates is on a fast track through the Texas Legislature.

Republican lawmakers including Abbott have faced pressure from the party’s right flank to target the state’s high property taxes. Backers have pointed to the $19 billion in federal stimulus money that has been set aside for Texas public schools and a nearly $8 billion surplus sitting in state coffers as an opportunity for the state to provide some temporary property tax relief.

He and Huffines aren't letting up on the vaccine stuff.  Can't believe how stupid the GOP is these days.  These motherfuckers would have done everything they could to keep polio going.

It’s a race to the bottom. That’s literally the only direction or purpose the GQP has.

But there is no bottom.

So you see how this will end.
