I'm bi-curious about condiments on burgers

As I've gotten older, I've found myself a lot more tolerant of different approaches to burger condiments.

I'm all about a classic American approach of mustard and a bit of mayo.  I also like a smashburger with burger sauce.  I also like a burger with bbq sauce, jalapenos, and cheddar.  Mayo and green chiles.  All kinds of things.  Eat what you like.  I think that as a society, we'd all get along better if we just let people be, and just eat the burgers they want.

I actually watched his manifesto video. The guy was apparently trans, wanted to kill trump, was obsessed with guns, obsessed with mass shooters, praised far-right politician Brandon Herrera, and had multiple anti-Semitic and racist things written on his weapons and cartridges, including “6 million wasn’t enough”. Definitely an ideological wild card. Above all you could tell he was an edgelord that viewed himself as really cool and funny.

I have posted in another thread about how I've known several kids who have come out as trans to their parents.  While it's their journey to determine if their gender dysphoria is legitimate or not, I personally think they will come to discover they are not, knowing them as I do.  I also posted about where I see these kids getting the idea that they are trans.  All of them started spending an inordinate amount of time online during covid lockdowns, on video game servers, on discord, etc... and never returned to "real life" from before the lock downs.  They became convinced they were trans after interfacing with online communities where their "friends" (online only, never met in real life) are trans, and they are kind of following an online herd.

It has made me wonder if all these online spaces where this is prevalent are either A) refuges where the anonymity of the internet provides people with a safe space to question themselves with others who are also questioning themselves or B) essentially traps set to ensnare troubled teens into a sense of gender dysphoria so as to generate more societal discord.  Like, how do we know that these online "friends" aren't a Russian AI chatbot?  Or just some person getting funded by a group who benefits from our societal discord to essentially "recruit" troubled teens into the front lines of the culture wars?  We don't.  All we can really say is that there are a whole lot of people/groups inside and outside of this country that would have no moral or ethical qualms about funding/facilitating such an operation.  That this trans person was obsessed with guns, mass shooters, far-right politicians, anti-semitism and was stenciling Russian messages on their weaponry makes me wonder even more.

But, the most likely scenario is that these kids are troubled, either from a childhood interrupted by covid or other reasons, and these underlying issues make them want to "escape" the real world for a virtual one.  They then wander into an online environment where being trans is trendy.  These communities provide them with connection and acceptance, and they start to mimic their peers as teens are wont to do.  These peers just happen to be online and trans.  Voila, you now have a teen with gender dysphoria on your hands.  Their parents are typically blindsided when the teen finally comes out.  If they are the type tuned into the conservative infosphere, predigested answers as to how and why their kid is trans are readily available.  It's the liberals, the groomers at the public school, the democrats, Hollywood, and so on.

It's a goddam shame our kids are a fucking political football.  Just leave them alone to figure out who the fuck they are.

I don't think it's a malevolent outside force building chatrooms and online spaces to transmute children into different genders to troll parents.

That's fucking ridiculous.

I think the social destruction of third spaces (and places in general to just exist without work) is what's driving people into the conspiracy scenario you frame it as. There's nowhere to hang out that ISN'T online for many kids.

I agree that this is the most likely scenario - but one step further, kids like to try things on. They'll proclaim that pizza is their favorite food one day, and be mad that they got pizza the next. I think much of the energy from children wrt/ "I'm trans!" is much the same, only adults are taking them seriously rather than as a object of play that it is.

Isn't it also ridiculous that Haitians are eating pets en masse in Ohio?  That Jade Helm was an attempt by the federal government to subjugate red states?  That the Clintons murdered everyone they did business with?  That public schools are installing litter boxes to accommodate furries?  That Los Angeles and DC are undergoing unprecedented crime so as to warrant occupation by federal forces?

There are malevolent forces instilling ideas in the populace to engineer social discord literally all. the. time.  Where would they stop?  What line is a line uncrossable?  The only thing that would prevent them from not just exploiting gender dysphoria but engineering it is the means to engineer it.  Knowing what is possible with AI at scale, I am not sure those means don't exist.

We are living in a multi-tentacled psyop to upend the United States that has been engineered by malevolent forces from both inside and outside the country.  Feel free to make your arguments that this isn't the case, I will certainly consider them.

My brother’s oldest is gender dysphoric, and their experience has expanded my understanding of the dynamic. Not the causation, but the individual experience and their choices. Previously, I was aware of kids who, from their earliest age, were consistent, persistent, and emphatic about being a gender different from their biological one. And it makes sense to me that those parents sought to do whatever they could to support their child’s perceived gender, including hormone therapy. So, the low key conversations and pronoun adjustments going on in our extended family, which came out of the blue and which continue to evolve, are educational, and I often fail to internalize the nuances of what is happening.

My brother’s kid is not an online social media type. They are a bookworm, a model maker, a computer builder, and a sports enthusiast, mostly quiet, reserved and aware. Brother and SiL watch and support, but stay out of their child’s decision making process.

Brother felt gut punched by the identity, however troubled, of the shooter. Said it is more gasoline to the fire that threaten’s has child’s well being. He is right.

I don’t want my personal observations/experiences to imply that I don’t believe anyone who is experiencing GD is not doing so for their own personal and legitimate reasons.  Or that no one should be trans or have their life’s happiness at the end of a transition.  There are absolutely people who are and should.  Their right to self determination should not be infringed.

I only mean that in my personal experience, there are a lot more people experiencing GD than previous generations, and that for those that I personally know, being trans seems to have more to do with fitting in with an online crowd than a personal journey of self discovery and determination.

I've had a similar experience to Willfully.  My BIL has a trans kid.  They live far away, so I haven't been around them that much to really have a strong idea of why it happened. From my limited view, the kid was very normal growing up.  It appeared to me to be a confusion/attention-seeking thing.  But again, what do I know?  I agree with Goredho that there does seem to be more GD now, but it's possible that with growing acceptance that more people are being outwardly honest because they feel a bit more comfortable and empowered.  It could also be that external influences, like online shit, are confusing kids or causing more kids to believe they are trans.  It could be a little bit of both.

I have some limited experience here and, unless I'm missing something in the last few posts, it's odd to me that there's not a recognition of psychologists who are pretty good at determinining true gender dysphoria from confused children who might be trying to fit in with a particular crowd or who are seeking attention. I feel that's overlooked in bad faith by too many people when it becomes a political football (not the posters above to be clear but the national conversation on the topic). They speak is though people are just changing their genitals on a whim and that kids can just walk into the pedatricians office and get reassigned if they feel different. That's not how it works. It's why the South Park episodes on the topic piss me off, they just walk into the doctor and get altered. BS. Also, there's not "more GD" going on, just like there's not "more" gay people that in the past, we're just now in a world where it can be openly raised and discussed than in the past where it could literally lead to imprisonment or execution. There is more questioning going on because there is more out there on the topics but there aren't "more" people who are truly GD it's just more open and can be identified better than in the past.

This seems like a 100% certainty, not a mere possibility. Literally in anytime prior to the last 20 years, a person living life as an open Trans person was a surefire way to get assaulted or killed. At best you were looking at total social ostracization and loss of employment.

Yeah, you've described the right-wing narrative. They think the moment a kid says, "I think I'm trans" that a surgeon appears for gender reassignment surgery. It's so ignorant and absurd. As with almost every issue, there's much more depth and a lot of nuance.  The public can't know every trans person's history.  I would be willing to assume that a huge percentage of them receive gobs of treatment of one kind or another.  And they certainly do if they seek medical treatment like hormones or surgery. To do otherwise would be medically unethical and probably malpractice. Are there unethical doctors out there committing malpractice?  It's probably happened, but far, far from the rule.

Yep.  And it's the perfect example of the logical fallacy of "correlation = causation."

Trans person commits a horrible act: it is 100% because of what they are.  Trans people are evil abominations, this is proof!

Angry white person commits act of extermination of minorities (El Paso, Tree of Life, Buffalo, Charlotte), both stating their intent to get rid of leeches/vermin, using the EXACT language of the nativist/"America First" movement that repeats those things in the anger-sphere: crickets.  Hate rhetoric from the right is not an issue at all, why are you being all political?

Allowing trans people to exist is evil.

Fomenting race-based hatred and violence is free speech.

Get it right, libtards!

Just goes to show on a fundamental, human level-- black, white, brown, straight, gay, trans-- we are all beholden to the biology and neurology that governs our corporeal machines. We are all at risk of our brains breaking and then committing evil because we are all capable of wickedness (and it can be argued innately wicked depending on your spiritual beliefs).

Then maybe....just maybe.....we shouldn't reward and empower movements that enthusiastically shovel coal on those fires, like telling people over and over and over that brown people are vermin and invaders and the cause of all problems in America.

And maybe.....just maybe....we shouldn't demonize people for what they are, driving them to desperation and psychosis (mostly manifesting in suicide and self-harm, sometimes manifesting in outward violence).

Instead.....both those things are cornerstones of modern American society.  We are defined by, and enthusiastically reward with empowerment, both approaches.  Call brown people vermin who need to be exterminated, and trans people who are abominations who should not be allowed to walk among us, and you're on the fast-track to holding high office/being given a public microphone to disseminate those views.

We are all capable of wickedness.  Maybe stoking those flames with utter assholery and cruelty is a bad idea.

While I agree, since 80% of mass shootings (or whatever the actual number is, you get the point) are straight white males, then the priority should be figuring out how to not stoke the flames that break that demographic, whatever that might be. At least following your logic.

Well, there seem to be two schools of thought on that.

One school -- the one that is winning, and presently governing our country -- is that "allowing minorities to exist, and women to have agency and rights, REALLY pisses white men off, so we should get rid of those irritants."

Another school is that "maybe we shouldn't tell white men that nothing is their fault, it's really the fault of minorities and women who don't know their place, because that inevitably motivates some of those white men to be violent against the various 'others.'"  That school of thought is toast, and has no chance of even being influential, much less prevailing.

So, there we are.  We are following path 1.  We will stop stoking the flames that piss off white American once we finally purge America of the people who are -- and these aren't my words, they are literally the president's -- "poisoning the blood of our country" and such.  So, we'll accomplish that goal, and white men will be happy once again.....once my family and I are purged from this great nation.

We'll get fewer votes than Jill Stein did.

The problem isn't just the leadership we have to choose from.  It's that our leaders are a reflection of who we the people are and what we want and believe.  Turns out, "we the people" are really shitty.

You get it!  Also, eliminate all minority competition for jobs by having the DOJ/local AGs (Paxton) sue any business that hires minorities for any job of any real pay/responsibility as "illegally practicing DEI."

Hiring a minority for a position that requires any real education and qualifications is per se evidence that it's a DEI hire because....well, you know.....some types just really aren't as qualified as good white folks.  We all know that.

Don't listen to me, listen to THEM, they've told you flatly that is their plan.

So, finally....we'll make America great for white men again, which was always its only permissible purpose for existing.  Letting dirty people infiltrate and "poison the blood of our country" was a huge mistake.  We won't make it again.

This deserved to be repeated.  The leadership we have at the national level has had to pass the test of public scrutiny and acceptance at multiple levels over more than a decade.  This is what the U.S. has said it wants.  Repeatedly.  Over and over, prevailing attitudes in myself and on these forums notwithstanding.

Its a really interesting time to be alive.  The context of the times gives rise to all sorts of philosophical quandaries, such as: if a majority of people in a democracy want to end democracy, is it tyranny to force them to live under continued democracy?

And creepy that this kid wrote so much in Russian.   Getting harder to ignore the conspiracy crap these days.

The kid wrote mostly in English transcribed into a Russian-Cyrillic and had a few very simple phrases, words, and slogans in actual Russian. It’s clear that he was marinating in some Z corners of the internet, but noting at all suggests beyond that and the whole picture is just a jumble.

I think we are living in an era of politically adjacent but not actually politically motivated, mental illness fueled violence.  The atmosphere and inchoate rage is very reminiscent of the late 60s and 70s when the whole nation was at a permanent simmer. There’s no clear-cut political motive or thought here, but you do have a very disturbed and angry person who is clearly impacted by the overheated rhetoric and environment.

I mean, this could be worse, honestly. Seems like a statement of fact, but maybe not complete facts. It's still too early to know anything, really. In no way giving cross-eyes mcgee a pass here, but I don't see alarm in what he wrote.

Interestingly no mention of the shooter being trans, but I guess we're just going to let those accusations go unfettered and unpunished around here.

He made sure to call him the “male subject” (which, whatever but it is noticeable) and he made sure that all the facts released align with a narrative that the kid was anti-Trump and anti-MAGA. And it’s all well before any responsible investigator should be making these types of leading comments, and it’s missing other key elements here.  You can see the narrative shaping and it’s very manipulative.
