Tell Me About Texas a&m

The Michigan State comparison is really unfair. They were smart enough to get out from under the dumb ass contract they prematurely handed out.

To extend the Michigan St comparison, if you really, REALLY, want to get an Aggie hot, tell them that, historically, as a program, Aggie is probably a little bit behind Michigan St.  Aggies have them a little on overall winning percentage, but MIchigan St. has them on pretty much every other metric.

I mean, they really should go 8-4 at worst next year. Their schedule is super favorable. No Alabama, Georgia or Ole Miss, and their four toughest games (ND, LSU, Texas and Missouri) are all at home. ND and LSU are relatively down, and although we should be better than A&M on paper, it's worth acknowledging that we have to replace a fuck ton of talent on both sides of the ball next year. If they can't get to 8 wins next year, it's a really bad sign for them.

their schedule really is pathetic.

8/12 games in Texas, ND, LSU and Texas at home plus whatever Mizzou ends up being next year.

easiest road schedule they will probably get (@Aub, @UF, @Miss St, @SCar)

another year where they should start off with +3 wins (McNeese, BG and New Mexico State)

Why worry about a gravy station when you just got handed first class tickets to the graviest of gravy trains?

Is Elko happy? Of course he is. He gets to at minimum double his current salary, add HC to his career achievements, and amazingly have fewer job responsibilities than he did at Duke.

This take by the sports columnist for SEC sports at USA Today is hilarious.

"Good thing Texas A&M applied to its safety school.

The Aggies didn't have the credentials to earn admission to Stanford or Cal-Berkeley, so it's off to Sacramento State, the commuter school that granted admission the moment it received the application.

That’s how I view the Aggies’ reported plans to hire Duke’s Mike Elko to replace the fired Jimbo Fisher.

All along, Elko profiled as the Aggies’ obvious fallback plan if the search didn’t produce a big fish.

Texas A&M paid a $77 million buyout to rectify its Fisher mistake and hire the guy who used to be Fisher’s wingman.

You could convince me that Michigan State made a better hire by nabbing Oregon State’s Jonathan Smith. You could convince me Texas A&M made off better with Elko.

But that’s sort of the point, isn’t it?

Texas A&M settling for Elko is a humbling reminder that, despite all of its resources, it’s closer to being Michigan State than Michigan."

I think this is a fair take. Elko always was the most reasonable and achievable choice for them. It was all the Josh Pate’s of the world saying that they were a “top 3, maybe 4” coaching destination that got it twisted.

Maybe, but why would anyone assume they'd win @Florida, @South Carlina, @Miss State, or @ Auburn, when they lost to ALL of those teams in 2022, the last time they played all but Florida on the road?

Not counting FCS scrubs, the only "likely" win on their entire schedule, is Arkansas, because for some reason they just flat out own the pigs.

I see this post every year about the aggys of what they should do, but you know what… they always don’t.

5-7 was a typo. Teams go 9-5 though. Texas went 9-5 in 1999. Lost the CCG and then got blown out Houston Nutt and an Arky team that, yet again, declared jihad on Texas while Texas failed to realize it had entered a rivalry cage match. That's one way to get there.

While true, it's far too flattering of A&M.  Over the last decade, here are the records of the 3 programs in question;

Michigan:  91/32 (0.74)

Michigan State:  74/49 (0.60)

Texas A&M:  77/47 (0.62)

For all intents & purposes, Texas A&M *IS* Michigan State

Billy Napier is a Charlie Strong-level disaster of a head coach, so I include Florida in the Arkansas territory assuming they retain him. Losing to Billy Napier should be a for cause fireable event for any coach.

I don't think they'll go 0-4 against LSU, Missouri, ND and Texas, and I don't think they'll go 4-0 against the teams you mention. But 8-4 should be very manageable absent a complete roster implosion or total failure of coaching. Both of which could of course happen, since it's A&M we're talking about.

Objectively, Charlie Strong had a better resume as both a DC and HC when he was hired at Texas.  Herman as an OC/HC, as well.

Let that sink in when aggy says we should be scared about the hire.

I was thinking this same thing last night.  Is this Charlie Strong redux?

Right, that's exactly the point.  I don't think it'll be a complete failure on either count, but rather a little bit of both. It's what the ags do.

You and I aren't far off, I just think 8-4 is their absolute ceiling, while you think it's the likely outcome.

Given all the laughter at aggy"s expense, we're probably less than 24 hours from an aggressive Looch article wherein he compares the hires of Elko and Sark and reaches the conclusion that objectively Elko is a much more justifiable hire, and any mocking you here coming from Austin is driven by fear and jealousy.

So predictable. The articles just write themselves.

For the love of God, don’t do that vs OSU.  Mullet can act like he doesn’t care but for him it would make his career.  We gave you all 77-0.  Please reciprocate.

Ha. Yeah, I don't think Texas is going to have an issue getting up for Saturday. In any event, OSU is heavily reliant on their running game with an immobile QB. I don't *expect* Texas to blow Okie State out, but there are a lot of key issues in UT's favor that would support that argument.

ND is a marquee name, but they're trash and next year is likely Freeman's last, so aggy will probably start 5-0 ranked in the Top 10 feeling great about themselves until the inevitable crash.

First loss prediction...at Miss State.

Hold the phone..."the greatest one-year turnaround in FBS history?"  Lulz.   Is it even in the top 20 of that?

June Jones at Hawaii has to be #1, and DeBoer at UDub has to be in the mix, Charlie Pell, Stoops?

It would take some digging but Duke was 3-9 in David Cutcliffe's last season in 2021. Elko's first Duke team was 9-4, so a six-win improvement. I'm going to go out on a limb and say, yeah, that ain't the biggest one-year turnaround for a first-year coach of all time.

Miss St was “fire the coach after one year” bad this year.  And they just hired Art Briles son in law.  Starting QB is in the portal.  They got up for the Egg Bowl and kept it respectable but in the big picture it’s a bigger dumpster fire than A&M over there.

Hell, Fred Akers' first team was a six-game improvement over DKR's last -- 5-5-1 to 11-1. (Of course, that team featured Earl Fucking Campbell.)

Funny how their eee-leet coaching destination top tier program needs a turn-around specialist.

They also have New Mexico St on the schedule next year and while I have no idea what they will bring back from this years 10-3 team, that's probably a saltier matchup than aggy expected when they signed them up. If Jerry Kill didn't have all the seizure problems, he'd probably be coaching at a better stop than NMSU. We'll see if their better players transfer out or stick around.

Would love a little aggie on aggie violence with NMSU walking away with the crown. Its a longshot, but NMSU did beat Auburn by a larger margin on the road than aggy managed at home. That seems like the most humorous candidate for the "early setback" stage of the annual roller coaster.

June Jones inherited a Hawaii team that went 0-11 in 1998. The 1999 Rainbows were 9-4. That has to be the record. It's definitely better than Elko's six-win turnaround at Duke.

Nmsu Aggie violence isn't something to mess around with.  So much drama there with that athletic department.

I'll take Lebby's O vs Elko's D any day of the week.

Plus the portal will be his friend.  He'll get a quality QB to run his offense.  Meanwhile, I expect the outbound portal at aggy to be pretty busy.

the Mich/MSU v Texas/aggy comparison couldn't be more similar in almost every way.  Mich and Texas have underachieved as far as championships post WW2 but own the rivalry.  MSU and aggy are practically mirror images.  MSU has had more recent success(last 20 years) IMO.
