As a parent of three high school "band nerds" I must say fuck you.

High school band is its own world, no doubt. But, thanks to the awesomeness of high school football in Texas, it's also the best you'll find pretty much anywhere. And it is a place of belonging for a lot of kids who are not naturally athletic or are different in many ways. But they are great kids and many go on to do great things.

And, holy hell, do they work hard!

I've seen it up close for many years, so I know what it takes to make a great marching band, which is why I get so annoyed at all the oohing and aahhhhing over the aggie band. I admit it looks impressive the first time you see it, but it ain't hard to do what they do.

End soap box.

I had figured aggy for an easy 8 wins in '24 with their schedule that features no games against UGA, Bama, or OU. With their roster implosion, though, I have reconsidered. They are in danger of missing bowl eligibility:

ND L -- aggy gets run off their own field

McNeese St W -- aggy controls the game for 4 quarters and proves they are big boys

@ UF L -- Pillow fight goes to the home team

Bowling Green W -- Looks like the Elk has figured things out and the world better look out

Arky @ Jerryworld W -- Gritty win over SEC team. World starts to see what aggy already knows. click click.

LSU L -- might have overlooked them and failed to account for being their superbowl

@ Auburn L -- another road loss; who could have foreseen it?

@ MSU toss-up -- chance to break the road losing streak

@USCe toss-up -- ditto

Mizzou L -- LOL

NMSU W -- The sips want no part of this smash mouth team

Texas L -- herp

O/U 5 wins, believable range 4-7

It's actually pretty sad.  I don't know how they would have done in the B12, but they couldn't have done any worse, that's for sure.

Arkansas fucked themselves by losing access to Texas players. By the time aggy showed up to give them consistent games in Texas over 20 years had passed and the damage was done because no recruit was alive who remembered them being relevant.

I can share that, when watching my high school athlete on the tennis court, sometimes I watch and hear the adjacent band practice.  Any kids that can listen to that clicking loud metronome sound and not quit,  have greater fortitude than my kids.  That thing is noise pollution.

I guess it's sad...from a pig POV.  I think it's fucking hilarious.  Fuck those inbred cider sucking hillbillies.  Glad it has worked out that way, nd I hope they go 30 plus more years without a championship.

Since piggiesaw joined only 6 teams have won the conference. Adding Texas and Oklahoma to the mix only decreases their odds as it will basically be the 8 haves vs the 8 have nots.

Boom. Got two boys, one in football one in band. I love watching both of them doing their thing, but I can enjoy in my living room my youngest with his baritone.

Troy to Tulane. Seems somewhat horizontal.

Sumrall is pretty good, at least he’s shown during his time at Troy. Really thought he’d get MSU, but since overlooked there, thought he’d wait another year at Troy, then hold out for the next SEC opening. Tulane will be tough to maintain their recent success-IMO.

The Elk?

really??

🤣

Great nickname. Best know for being killed by hunters. Two words instead of one for his last name. Same number of syllables for his nickname as his actual name. I’ve never seen people so desperate to coin nicknames as Texags. It’s actually crazy.

need a bingo card (more like a total blackout card) for aggy bowl excuses

1. did not want to be there not the CFP

2. lost jimbo

3. turning over roster to be SEC SEC SEC ready

4. BDF teams only have one hard game a year IF they get to play a SEC SEC SEC team in a bowl game and this is their superbowl

5. their coach is a man and he is 40

6. all or out top players are getting ready for the next level while BDF teams are playing their final game evAR

7. the SEC SEC SEC always gives us the least favorable match ups

I don’t think you get it. The Elk has fewer syllables and is easier to say than Elko you dipshit.

Pretty sure the elk will get hit by a car in year 2 with these killer hires and 2 kids a day leaving.

These days when teams in minor bowls are dealing with coaching changes, portal transfers, disgruntled players, and draft opt-outs I don't know how anyone can bet on these games.

Yeah, that's a good point.  Was talking with my gambling addicted cousin and we laughed about that scene in "Casino" where Pesci is describing how Ace Rothstein knew every little angle about college football games.  QB's dating situation, who was the referee, wind speed, etc.  And that was in the 60's and 70's, long before internet and cell phones.  And then all the info became readily available to the average joe, casual gambler 20-25 years ago.  And still, the spreads remain the same, the house still wins, and there's still degenerates.  But it's yet another new age where players come and go or sit out, most of which occurs after the initial spreads are put out.  Bowl season used to be a haven for smart money, and even my dumbass made a few bucks.  But now?  It's a another brave new world and nobody knows nothing about nothing again.

When speaking with students in b-school about trends and unicorns and all that cliche shit.  I'd tell them...the original 'crowd-sourcing' in America was sports betting point spreads.  That's all it ever was.  It wasn't a measure of how much better a team was, it was how much money thought this way and how much money thought that way, and in between there was some action for the small business (aka, "The House" or "The Book"), and they were just market makers.  That's it.  That's all it is.  USA Today didn't achieve its peak circulation because of the fun graphics and colorful photographs.  They made it because it was the one uniformly available newspaper in every single town in the United States.  People literally got whacked over differences in spreads according to different papers when the advent of calling cards and cell phones came along in the 1990s.  Finally, it was tacitly agreed upon that whatever USA Today printed as the spread in the back of their sports page each Friday (for NCAA & NFL) would be the gold standard because everybody could see it for $.50-$1.50.  So circulation spiked because every armchair QB and sportsbar patron bought a Friday and Monday copy every single week for a decade.  And that, as they say, was that.
