This bad guy is getting paid $50 million to not work. Same with Jimbo and Franklin. Doesn't really seem like the good guys are really winning anything, but okay.

I'm glad Kelly's sorry ass is being embarrassed, but it's a Pyrrhic victory overall IMO.

He was getting the money no matter what. He got fired. I'll take whatever wins we can get.

I think we are seeing these mid-season firings so that the fired coaches can find other jobs next season to offset the buyout. Perhaps the days of waiting till the end of the year to fire a coach are over if it's clear he ain't the guy.

There is a long list of embarrassing shit I would do for $50 million.

All I know is Lane Kiffin gon' get paid.

Bigly. He may get multiple raises just from ole miss this fall/winter alone. Too many jobs open at schools that want to pretend they can win it all, and not nearly enough big hires out there to fill em. I think we see some headscratching shit go down. Should be entertaining, at least Lane's trolling throughout will be.

They have an entire state behind them. Texas has like 10 fbs schools, and half of them are in p4 and sabotage each other at every opportunity.

There's more money in Austin alone then Louisiana.

It's crazy to me that the governor of Louisiana stepped in to get this done. Say what you want about Texas football from 2010 through 2022 and current. We have never been a "governor-steps-in-and-overrules-the-AD-to-fire-the-coach" level trash fire

And I wish their destitute asses the very best of luck in adhering to that standard in the post-NIL era

It's so the entire team can't portal out.  You fire a coach when schools are all on break and your team will disintegrate overnight.  In the middle of a semester, they can't go anywhere.

I was told LSU is broke over and over, yet they can afford great baseball teams spending more than anyone else and they can afford this buyout….

Marucci.

What would happen if Kelly were to befallen by some unfortunate incident and no longer alive to collect that buyout money? Does LSU still have to pay? Asking for a friend

It’s very confusing to me. Coach fired midseason and the portal opens for 30 days. But they can’t transfer mid season/semester. I assume they can also enter the portal during the normal window after the season? So why enter midseason? Does it mean they can start actively speaking with other schools? Are other schools speaking with these people midseason? I think OKST has a couple of players who entered the portal and are still going to play out the season.

It's a loophole the schools are exploiting.  There isn't really a way to close it that I can see.  This gives them time to work on retaining players instead of going through the feeding frenzy that happened at Bama when Saban retired.

You’d be crazy not fire mid season because of this. The other loop hole is retiring right before season

We fired Mack. I would bet most NC winning coaches got fired. Saban and Urban are the only 2 I can remember who "moved on" on their own. Well, Urban was kinda forced to move on because he had a killer on his roster.

The amount of coaches who are going to line up for this job just to get paid to walk away later will be staggering

In fairness, pretty much the whole fanbase never liked the hire. Scott Woodward should probably also be looking for a job.

He should have never gotten another job in football after the Jimbo contract.

Seriously, any coach and their agent knows what contracts Jimbo and Kelly got.  Why would you demand anything less from the same AD who approved those contracts?

If I was an AD, I wouldn't go after any of these big names and offer massive contracts.  Think long term and try to build a coaching staff that can hire internally if the HC gets a better job/offer. Or just hire another up and comer. The only rule I'd try to live by is not paying large buyouts.

Recruiting is basically transactional now. You don't need a big, charming personality to get elite players anymore. Can you coach, develop, and pay fair market price? That's what matters. A rebuild doesn't need to take 3-4 years like in the past. You can flip a roster in one offseason with enough $$/portal acquisitions. But pissing away $20, $30, $50 million in HC buyouts is what can kill you. All of this shit is unsustainable.

That's an example.

I know it's not easy. A school like Indiana hit a home run with Cignetti, totally understandable for them to go all-in since IU has had no real success in football. Also he's older and they set it up for him to retire there. That was a smart move.
