I can't wait to see Port Isabel go 10-0 and then lose in the first round of the playoffs.  Actually, they'd lose in the 2nd, because they'd get someone like Carrizo Springs in round 1.

You don’t just walk into Valley View Tiger Stadium and expect to come out with a W. That was an impressive 13-12 win yesterday.

In their first game, they trailed Hays 64-0 at half.

So clearly, Hays >>>  Westlake.  It's no wonder Westlake got Hays moved out of their district.

That's not why. It's because Hays wouldn't agree to a cash amount to allow Westlake to choose the refs for the games.

They have 2700+ kids, you think they could do better. Yes, lots of growth out there in the way of cheap houses.

They do call themselves "Akins Early College High School" but maybe they are going to college for something other than sports.

COVID did a number on fine arts and athletic participation, especially at lower socioeconomic schools.  Last year was my final year as a band parent and I was shocked to see the change in the size of bands at UIL.  The poorer the band, the more they lost.

Akins enrollment has peaked and is headed down, along with almost every other AISD high school.  The district is slowing repairing the schools -- but it's just too expensive to live in Austin.  I predict that by 2032, Austin ISD will not have a single 6A school.

"Early College High School" means that they partner with ACC to offer college hours for high school classes, so that kids can graduate with an associate's degree and shave a year or two off of their college costs.

DFW

Lancaster @ Guyer  The Tigers snapped SOC's 16-game winning streak last week and head into Denton for an even bigger test.  The Wildcats have looked unbeatable, posting 30+ point wins over two good teams, Heath and Aledo, holding each to 14 points.  Lancaster has the speed to score more than that, but I don't see how they win this.

They did, and they didn't.  50-27 Guyer.

Rockwall @ Prosper  Two 2-0 teams here.  Rockwall has allowed only 35 points in their two, something that is very un-Rockwall-like, as poor defense traditionally kills them in the playoffs. Maybe this year's different?

Prosper 19-11.  Fewest points by Rockwall since 2019.

Allen @ Arlington Martin   Every year, Martin seems to roll over just about everyone, then shit the bed against a traditional north Texas power.  They already have two good resume wins, over Lake Travis and Cedar Hill, though both seem to be down this season.  Allen emphatically rejected rumors of their downness last week, blitzing a very good Houston King team.  Would be hard to bet against the Eagles after that, especially given Martin's history.

Allen 27-16.

West Texas

Permian @ Tascosa  Tascosa once again challenges a 6A team...If they win this, they have a good claim to being the best team in WT, regardless of classification.  Fun contrasting offensive matchup, too, as Tascosa will run and run some more, while Permian has gone wide open.

Permian rallies for 2 TDs in the 4th, including the winner with 2 min left, 13-12.

Cisco @ Breckenridge  The Lobos survived a struggle with Wall last week, and now step up to face the 3AD1 Buckaroos, who spanked a very good Childress team last week.

30-27 Breck

Idalou @ Holliday  Four impressive wins combined for these teams -- Idalou has handled larger Sweetwater and rival New Deal, while Holliday has dominated larger Iowa Park and Jim Ned.  Very interesting game here.

Whoops, Holliday 37-7.  Long-ass bus ride for Idalou.

East Texas

Longview @ Tyler Legacy (nee Lee)  Longview looks like they'll be the beast of the East again.  They punked longtime rival Marshall 48-11 last week and get another rival this week.

Jebus.  69-0 Lobos.

Timpson @ Daingerfield  After running into Shiner in the state semis two years in a row, this might be Timpson's year... They've scored 105 in 2 games.  They'll be playing up against the 3A Tigers, so we'll get to see how good they really are.

They are very very good -- 54-28.  Big statement made by Timpson.

Central

Malakoff-Salado @ Hewitt  Salado has outscored two bigger class teams 91-45, while Malakoff lost a heartbreaker to Grandview last week. I think Malakoff turns it around in a minor upset.

28-27 Malakoff in 2 OT, as they stop the Eagles' 2-pt try.

College Station @ Temple  State finalists last season, the Cougs got embarrassed in week 1.  They've also lost their all-state RB for the season, so it's going to be a rough season for them.  Temple looks to have a very good defense so far.  Wildcats by a bunch.

Nope.  CS showed a lot of pride 45-35.

Brock-Wimberley @ Waco  No idea why Brock decided to open the season with three of the best 4A programs in the state.  Wimberley's D pitched a shutout last week, and if they're going to be good, that's how they'll do it, as they don't have much of a passing game thanks to their QB transferring unexpectedly.

Wimberley dominated the first half and led 23-7.  Brock completely turned it around, scoring 2 TDs and getting 2-pters after both to tie 23-23.  But Brock went for it on 4th-1 at their own 19 with 2 minutes left and got stuffed/fumbled.  Wimberley ran 7 total plays in the second half (before victory formation), and the 7th was a 19-yd TD pass on the next play.  Brock fumbled the kickoff oob at their 5, then gave up a safety on a sack/IG.  32-23 Texans.  Jesus, Brock has Gunter next week!  That's the toughest non-district schedule I've ever seen.

Waco Connolly @ Cameron Yoe  Connolly has had a very good program recently, but they're hard to notice because they have been sharing a district with powerhouses like LaVega and China Spring.  They beat LaVega 35-34 last week, but now run into a Yoe team that has already scored 133 points.

Connally got out to a big lead and held on, 45-40.

Austin

Steele @ Hutto  The Hippos won a wild one 56-49 over LH last week.  Steele looks like the class of SA with wins over Brennan and LT.

Steele 49-16.  Wow, especially because of the 16...

SA

New Braunfels @ Canyon   This isn't much of a rivalry, mostly because Canyon is usually horrible, but both teams are 2-0 for probably the first time ever, so there should be a big crowd at the red field.

Canyon got a late stop to pull the upset, 35-32.

Poth @ Shiner  Poth is another very good program that doesn't get noticed, usually because they run into Refugio in the early rounds of the playoffs.  Shiner looks to be down this season, so this is about a good a shot as the Pirates will get at them.

Poth played their asses off, but couldn't stop Dalton Brooks, who had a late TD run and 198 yards.

Houston

Katy-Tompkins  Saturday game... Tompkins has looked primed to usurp the Tigers, but can only point to a 2020 win in the rivalry.  The Falcons went down 56-21 last season; expect something similar.

Westfield @ North Shore  Game of the week in the state.  People forget that Westfield handed NS their only loss last season.  The Spring Mustangs have won twice by 114-32, but the GP Mustangs look like a rolling ball of knives, again.

HOLY SMOKES, 55-25 North Shore!

Coastal Bend

Calallen @ Flour Bluff  Calallen should win this, but FB has won 23 games over the last two seasons, so they know what they're doing.

Calallen 40-7.

Refugio @ Edna  Refugio is only 2A, but most people would normally expect them to handle the 3A Cowboys.  Maybe not this season, as Refugio has looked very mortal, and Edna has shown a solid D.

Refugio 40-22.

RGV

Mission Vets @ Harlingen  Vets has started off with two very good wins, but they haven't faced anything like 6A Harlingen, who posted 76 points last week.

Cardinals cement their top ranking in the always-prestigious Helobious Poll, 56-0.

Bowie won’t drop as long as Circle C /SW Austin is still desirable but you’re probably right about the other 6A schools.

Vela is still my #1, they look like a machine, and I’m formally picking them to win 5A D1 R4. It’s time. CC Vets seems down, CC Miller is due for a reckoning.

Harlingen oline has one guy under 6’0, maybe 2. That’s pretty big for any high school. Combine that with a 5’10 200+ lb RB that squatted 550 last spring at a powerlifting meet and you’ll steamroll the fuck out of RGV teams. Defense is the best it’s been in years as well, even if we lost a star DL to injury. If we get the right round 2 matchup we have a shot to win.

NB Canyon should not suck the next couple years. Led by Mike Adams’ two sons on offense.

Steele is definitely the top dog in SA this year. That Warner kid is a stud, so is their RB. I think Judson is another year from really putting it together.

The Harlingen game was worse than the score looks. It was 49-0 at the half and 35-0 in Q1. Gomez respects Gilpin and just shut it down the second half. Vets only got 89 total yards. One thing I noticed is that backup QB Kornegay throws a prettier ball than QB1 Morales. Soph linebacker Tomlin is a beast.  You can build a D around him the next two years.

San Benito put a hurt on a big, fast McAllen Memorial. SB coach Gomez typically has his teams ready to play and I’ve seen enough to say they are a tough out for anyone and the Battle of the Arroyo will be a huge matchup this year.

News flash.   My Calallen Wildcats put up almost 200 yards passing out of 495.   I think the last time that happened,  Lake Travis was a 3A school out in the sticks west of Austin.

They have, although it’s been against some really lower-tier competition.  Their district is way behind the other RGV 5A D1 district. They look to me like they’ll challenge for their district but head for an early exit.

Longview won 69-0 and Taylor Tatum had only  7 carries and only played in the 1st quarter. Hale only had iirc 3 targets. The third string played the entire 3rd quarter and some 4th teamers played the entire 4th.

Tyler Legacy might be the worst Tyler ISD team I’ve ever seen. The Lobos offense is something to behold.

Looking forward to a playoff matchup against Westlake, if Westlake doesn’t pussy out and campaign to get put in the opposite division.

What does that mean? Enrollment numbers were set months ago, what kind of campaigning can they do? Unless Del Valle makes the playoffs Westlake is D1 .

Interesting how every time a new school opens up in the Alvin/Manvel/Pearland area, that school becomes the superior football program in the area after a couple years. Pearland high was dominant until 2010, then Manvel took over shortly after they started fielding a full varsity, and now Shadow Creek is the best in the area after opening 5 years ago. I’m fully expecting Iowa Colony to have a great program in a couple years since they just opened.

Best matchups this week...

Let's start in the Coastal Bend, which has IMO the best matchup in the state:

Calallen @ Cuero  The two biggest bullies in Region IV (whoops, Cuero is in R3 this year) traditionally, who haven't played in recent memory. After dominating two good programs (Navarro & El Campo), the Gobblers really smacked little brother Yoakum last week, scoring 75 points.  Calallen has a new coach for the first time since the dinosaurs died out, but they look like they have another outstanding D, which had allowed on 25 points in 3 games.  I'll take the smaller school in this one thanks to the HFA and a more diverse offense.

An unusually high number of great matchups out west this week:

WF Rider @ Lubbock Cooper  If familiarity breeds contempt, the hatred should be off the charts in this one.  These two have met 8 times in 4 seasons, with the 2nd game each season being in the region finals 3 times.  Neither is quite as good this season, and they won't meet again because they're in different divisions in 5A.  Cooper actually lost to Frenship in week 2, while Roho beat a good LCoronado team last week to remain undefeated, but Roho lost their QB who seemingly started since about 2005 to graduation and UVa, so I'll take Cooper in this one.

Hawley @ Albany  I looove this matchup.  Hawley kind of came out of nowhere last season and made it to Jerryworld and they look to be legit again, undefeated and only 19 points allowed in 3 wins.  Albany is a regular visitor to Jerryworld and will continue to be as long as Denney Faith is the coach.  They're smaller (2AD2), but pedigree matters a lot in HSFB.

Coleman @ Llano  Coleman is a ranked 2A team that has outscored its opponents 111-30 so far; Llano is 21-4 over the last two seasons and won R4 in 3AD1 in 2020.

Glen Rose @ Brownwood  I mentioned opening week that I think Glen Rose is on the verge of becoming a special program and they have since blitzed Grandview, Gatesville, and Graham.  Brownwood lost a close one to 5A Abilene Wylie, and have won two more easy ones since.  This one will be tight.

Central

China Spring @ Waco Connolly  Connolly is a very underrated program because they've been overshadowed in their area by LaVega and CS.  They've already beaten LaVega and won a shootout over Yoe last week, but China Spring looks even better than last year, when they won state.

Yoe @ Bellville  Yoe is punching up again this week.  They've scored 173 points already this season, but they're facing a 4A team that has pitched 2 shoutouts in a row.

Arlington Martin @ Temple  Several FBS recruits in this one, and in one of my favorite stadiums in the state.  Both teams coming off their first loss -- Martin to Allen, and Temple to College Station.

Mart @ Centerville  Mart's games are almost always blowouts (163-13 aggregate so far), but this one has a chance to be different.  A small chance.

DFW

Celina @ Anna Both are ranked.  Anna is trying to follow the football ascendency of neighboring Melissa as they get swallowed up by Metroplex expansion.  Celina is Celina again, outscoring opponents 170-39 so far.

Gunter @ Brock  Gunter has played 3 of the best programs in 4AD2 (Tex PG, Hirschi, and Wimberley), with only an 0-3 record to show; so now they get one of the best in 3A.  Gunter has 92 of their last 100 games.  Brock dominated Wimberley for all but the 2nd quarter and the last 3 minutes last week, so I think they get over the hump on Gunter.

SOC @ Parish Episc.  SOC is the best 0-3 team in the state, with losses to Duncanville, Lancaster, and DeSoto.  Parish is the team that beat Aledo week one.  They also crushed Austin LBJ last week.  They've won state in TAPPS 3 years in a row.

Prosper @ Guyer  Guyer beat the Eagles twice last year, including a miracle win in the region finals.  They just have Prosper's number.

Austin

Stony Point @ Vandegrift  The Vipers lost a crusher in week 1 to Dripping, but have posted consecutive 45-0 wins since.  SP is 3-0, but Vandy is just better.

SA

Kinda shitty schedule this week -- the game I thought would be most interesting was Brennan-Taft, but they played last night, and it was a 54-13 Brennan blowout.

Houston

Light week in H-town, too.

The Woodlands @ New Caney looks like the best game.  NC is pretty untested, with 3 walkovers by 160-42 on their resume.  Woodlands lost to North Shore to start the season, but have dominated since.  Probably keeps up.

East Texas

Longview @ Lufkin  Bigtime rivalry, but the Lobos are way too good this season.

RGV

Donna @ Edcouch-Elsa  The Redskins are undefeated and unchallenged for the first time in a while.  I'm rooting for them to have a big year so that everyone down there can finally quit talking about 1960.  E-E is 2-1, but their loss was to CC Carroll, which is bad.

I'm in Seattle, going to O'Dea vs Rainier Beach.  And I'm high as fuck, so I have no idea how I typed this much.

Jacob Rodriguez actually transferred to Texas Tech and switched to linebacker.

I keep tabs on damn near every notable homie football player in the state.

Trinity drops to 0-4 with North Crowley next week

Geez. Between Trinity and Cedar Hill, some usually great programs are shockingly poor in DFW. I was a little concerned about Trinity simply going after Lineweaver’s son who had never even been a coordinator. Looks like that could be correct, unfortunately.

Calallen 24-8.  Legit win for Wildcats.

Unusually high number of great matchups out west this week:

WF Rider @ Lubbock Cooper  If familiarity breeds contempt, the hatred should be off the charts in this one.  These two have met 8 times in 4 seasons, with the 2nd game each season being in the region finals 3 times.  Neither is quite as good this season, and they won't meet again because they're in different divisions in 5A.  Cooper actually lost to Frenship in week 2, while Roho beat a good LCoronado team last week to remain undefeated, but Roho lost their QB who seemingly started since about 2005 to graduation and UVa, so I'll take Cooper in this one.

Cooper D got it done with 4 INTs, 17-14.

Huge statement by Hawley.  Scored the first 26 and held on for 26-14 win.

Coleman @ Llano  Coleman is a ranked 2A team that has outscored its opponents 111-30 so far; Llano is 21-4 over the last two seasons and won R4 in 3AD1 in 2020.

Llano 31-6

Glen Rose @ Brownwood  I mentioned opening week that I think Glen Rose is on the verge of becoming a special program and they have since blitzed Grandview, Gatesville, and Graham.  Brownwood lost a close one to 5A Abilene Wylie, and have won two more easy ones since.  This one will be tight.

I'll  shut up about Glen Rose now.  17-6 Brownwood.

51-21 China Spring

Yoe @ Bellville  Yoe is punching up again this week.  They've scored 173 points already this season, but they're facing a 4A team that has pitched 2 shoutouts in a row.

Brahmas 49-14.  Wow.

Arlington Martin @ Temple  Several FBS recruits in this one, and in one of my favorite stadiums in the state.  Both teams coming off their first loss -- Martin to Allen, and Temple to College Station.

Martin led 24-0, after 1  and took it 53-18.

Mart @ Centerville  Mart's games are almost always blowouts (163-13 aggregate so far), but this one has a chance to be different.  A small chance.

Wow, 21-20 Mart.

DFW

Celina @ Anna Both are ranked.  Anna is trying to follow the football ascendency of neighboring Melissa as they get swallowed up by Metroplex expansion.  Celina is Celina again, outscoring opponents 170-39 so far.

Anna pulls the upset 28-25.

Brock dominated again, but gave up a pick 6 and a KOR TD, lost 21-16.

SOC rallied from 14 down to win on a long FG on last play 31-28.

Prosper @ Guyer  Guyer beat the Eagles twice last year, including a miracle win in the region finals.  They just have Prosper's number.

Guyer beat Prosper for the 5th time in 3 years, 23-6.

Austin

41-13 Vandy

14-7 New Caney  Lotta low scores tonight, huh?

East Texas

Longview @ Lufkin  Bigtime rivalry, but the Lobos are way too good this season.

Longview is really fucking good, 56-7.

26-8 Donna.

22-0 O'Dea  in front of about 100 people at Lumen Field.  (They were charging $30/game at this HSFB festival thing.) 2nd round of gummies kicking in.

Donna goes into the Black Hole and beats Edcouch 26-8. Impressive start for them.

PSJA North rolls McAllen 55-0. Showdown with Vela is easy pick for Beau’s RGV game of the week next week.

Remember the name Robert Pineda from Los Fresnos. Kid is putting up big numbers as a freshman QB on varsity.

Calallen 24. Cuero 8.

Calallen held Cuero to 260 yards Offense while putting up 310 of their own. With 150 of it in the air again. Cuero only 65 yards at half. That was probably one of the best half’s of defense I’ve seen Cal play in a decade or so against a team that has been whooping it up.

I think Calallen will be playing at Jerryworld in December. Cuero will be probably there as well in the 4a D2 bracket.
