Quiche better than Chicago-style pizza? Was quiche invented by a fellow Texas longhorn? No. But Chicago-style pizza WAS invented by a Texas Longhorn, Ike Sewell, at Pizzeria Uno in 1943.  And not only was Ike a Longhorn, he was an All-Southwest Conference guard as a player on the Longhorn football team from 1926 to 1929.

So you hush your dirty mouth.

I just had to laugh when I saw this walking home just now. They are trying to market something for the locals now.

My favorite pizza ever.  I need to get one next time I'm in Austin.

You bring up the crux of the matter.  A lot of us fondly remember a golden age of college football wherein the entire enterprise had a sense of history and decorum that gave gravitas to the proceedings.  There was a generational aspect that we carry on into adulthood.  That’s why it’s worth so much money, at the end of the day.

I would argue that dumbing it down to the lowest common denominator and featuring a bunch of crass, flavor of the minute celebrities degrades that very institutional sense of decorum and seriousness and will contribute to the erosion of the generational aspect.

I grew up in the 80s and 90s, so I would liken it to bringing Howard Stern and Andrew Dice Clay into the mix at the time.  How many of us would remember watching games with our family as fondly as we do with those clowns running the show?

Of course, I don’t know shit about fuck and I enjoy yelling at clouds, so take it for what it’s worth.

I feel this

To me, NCAA FB was always so far above NFL.

Your childhood friends went to your rival, so you carried that fun by beefing through holiday meetups back home.
The fans were more "upper crust" compared to NFL fans.
The product just felt superior - more innovation, the lack of free agency (until now), watching some random 3* kid from Tuscola, TX thrive.

Plus you had things like MACtion on a Tuesday night, Thursday night conference games, etc. that just hit different than your boring, over-produced TNF or MNF.  Rankings also made games more interesting - seeing something like #1 USC losing to unranked Stanford on a Friday night was better than anything the NFL was putting out.

All the things that made is special don't feel as special, except maybe the rivalry games.  CFB becoming a podcaster playground for degenerate gamblers and hot take donkeys is just.... ugh

This is good writing and has inspired me to revisit some of my favorite Red Smith and Grantland Rice articles. Thank you.

Keep it in the Cloak Room!

Oh wait, you only cry about that in certain cases.

Didn’t express any political opinions.  Just that Geoff Ketchum would be a perfect fit in the Cloak Room.  He’d be one of the most popular posters on that board and have Hugo’s rep count in no time. Nothing political about that.  Just truth.

Fuck you, of course you did.  Ketchum has well known leanings and you're using him as a stalking horse.  You're not usually horseshit, but you are here.

Ok. Ketch, one of the , if not the most reviled sports journalist in creation, with a reputation for " poor charity accounting"   wants to organize a charity with OTF and IT who recently had a falling out.

Gotta say. This is Ketchum to a T.

Tone deaf and ill informed for 800 Alex.

Cross posting this because it seems relevant and because fuck Lincoln Riley: USC is in a world of hurt. 358 million dollars ain't chump change. Maybe we should give Mark Bowman a call?

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/other/college-football-program-forced-into-painful-358m-cuts/ar-AA1IGtQZ

Quick - someone tweet this at Mark Bowman

Seriously, though, and I know recruits and their parents aren't paying attention to this shit like we are but how does someone read a line like "USC... is now forced to cut staff and sell off assets to stay afloat" and think, "yup, these guys are definitely going to be able to afford my huge NIL deal?" Selling off team shit? No idea how accurate this is but it sounds fucking grim

Also, my sister is in town. My wife and I are supposed to meet her tomorrow at some place called like "the Broiled Peach" or something stupid and trendy like that. I'm definitely now saying "fuck all that, we're going to Conan's. If you don't like it, tough shit. See you at Thanksgiving."

Ketchum’s political takes would be very well received in the Cloak Room.

Everybody's saying the Republicans are going to take both houses, but I've got sources, and I've been at this for a long time as some of you geniuses should know from paying me more than $2 thousand over the years, who say Kamala Harris is going to win the swing states and lead the Democrats to controlling at least one house and the White House. Look for some pretty surprising flips before election day.

Now, let me talk about myself for awhile...

From that linked article from EssentiallySports, the author writes:

Quote

Then Folt left. And in walked Beong-Soo Kim, interim president, with a brutal dose of reality. In a letter to staff on July 15, Kim didn’t sugarcoat it: “We are experiencing an unsustainable deficit.” Numbers don’t lie. A $158 million shortfall last year ballooned past $200 million in 2025. That’s $358 million headache now.

Here’s the source X/tweet the writer is working from (Ryan Kartje is the USC beat writer from the LA Times):

https://x.com/Ryan_Kartje/status/1944857555223908852?ref_src=twsrc^tfw|twcamp^tweetembed|twterm^1944857555223908852|twgr^b60c483a3b412231ad9232b3a4e4e3812f2db209|twcon^s1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.msn.com%2Fen-us%2Fsports%2Fother%2Fcollege-football-program-forced-into-painful-358m-cuts%2Far-AA1IGtQZ

1.) it seems the EssentiallySports writer is taking the deficit from one year ($158M) and adding it to the next year’s estimate ($200M) to come up with a new shortfall of $358M. I don’t know the particulars, but it would seem to be an additional $42M in the red, not another $200M.

2.) Just what in the fuck is the website EssentiallySports? Another Fansided-type crap site?

Anyway, I could be wrong, but based on the X, I don’t trust the numbers as they are calculated in this article. Also, screw SC, being down $200M is bad enough.

I can't think of a post that could more accurately prove @Darth Tron & @Js1's point. The game is better with the sentiment attached. Part of that is a connection with the players who chose and attend the same college you did. Sure, there has always been cheating for top players, but most of the team maybe got some 100 handshakes the same as other schools.

It's an overstatement to the game has gone totally NFL, but it's lurched in that direction. Sark still relies on atmosphere and culture as a recruiting edge. Other schools must do the same. Or at least that's what I'll believe to keep emotion and sentiment alive in myself.

Some here, outwardly anyway, look at the team they way they indicate they look at women: only for sex (let's face it, masturbation) as long as they're sexier than 99% of the woman you have ever or will ever likely meet.

Say pretty eyes around here and you're branded a homosexual.

But, I become a scold when I really just wanted to back Darth and Js1's play.
