I know the muslims and the hindus hate each other, but why is the state going after sikhs?

From @BeardIP's PBS link above:

Quote

...
India and Canada are caught up in a tense diplomatic showdown over the assassination of a Sikh separatist leader in British Columbia.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a naturalized Canadian citizen originally from the northern Indian state of Punjab, was an advocate for an independent Sikh homeland. He was killed by masked men outside a Sikh temple in the city of Surrey southeast of Vancouver in June. He'd been designated a terrorist by Indian authorities.
...

From the Intercept report in the OP:

Quote

... the intended target of the killing was Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, general counsel for the New York-based Sikh activist group Sikhs for Justice. ...
...
The alleged assassination plot against Pannun was in the works around the same time as the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen who was also a leader in the Sikh separatist movement. ...

These are not "activists". This dude was threatening to blow up airliners, which SIkh extremists have already done in the past. Extremists insurgency has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths in India in the 80s, including killing of a Prime Minister and attacks on Indian diplomats in UK, Canada.

The real question is why are American and Canadian governments protecting such scum?

TIL horn_of_the_morning is indian.

It looks like they're less protecting Pannun, and more don't have anything to arrest him over since he didn't break any laws. He seems like he'd warrant further investigation and observation, but that is where the friendly liberal govts should work together on intelligence, not send assassins. But maybe there's further backstory and incidents that the reuters story didn't cover.

I am as American as you are, but yes of Indian origin.

Also happen to know the history of the Khalistani (Sikh Extremist) and Jihadi terrorist movements in the subcontinent beyond one or two slanted lines in liberal publications in the West.

Khalistanis (Sikh Extremists) are not just "Activists" , like I said. They fund various mafia and terror groups and are responsible for a lot of violence, almost none of it makes the news in the West but destroys lives in India.

If you are genuinely interested, this gives a good overview of the situation.

Also, nobody in India, at this point really believes that Western governments are not complicit at some level in this matter. Repeated requests by Indian government officials about these terrorists have fallen on deaf ears. US, Canad and UK governments just refuse to designate these groups as terrorist organizations and subject them to the same laws and restrictions as other Jihadi groups.

Most in the west dont know the history of this movement and how important tackling this issue is for any Indian government not just Modi. Many just hear the name and start frothing at the mouth because they are programmed by NYT, Washington Post etc. to go "Modi Bad!!". You can find such examples in this thread as well.

This is a bad claim to make on such a short thread lol. I gotta disagree with you champ. Also you probably shouldn't be cheering on foreign government assassination campaigns in the US.

Modi should have sikh Biden's permission to assassinate the activist.  That's the only reason they are upset.  Doesn't curry any favors.  In other news, The Indians(dots, not feathers) are pretty pissed off at the US right now.  We found out she hired a nanny for basically slave wages.  So she got arrested for visa fraud and deported.  She claimed she was strip searched and treated like an animal.  Expect some titties for tatties on diplomats getting expelled

Yeah, it’s always an issue with authoritarian governments that we won’t just hand over citizens on their say-so and that even if there is a legitimate criminal complaint there is a process in place. We have an extradition treaty in place.  You don’t just whack people if you aren’t happy with the process.

The baroque conspiracy theories are out in full force, LMFAO at the idea anyone in the U.S. or Canada governments  actively give a shit about Sikh separatism and using to…do what, exactly? This shit is what is politely termed a “bilateral irritant” (aka, the other side is like a dog with a gotdamn bone and can’t discuss it rationally.)

Big sticking point is that Canada avoids extraditing accused criminals to the country of prosecution if said country has the death penalty and there's a chance it'll be used.

India has gone after terrorist targets hiding out in Pakistan using these sorts of methods for a while now, since Pakistan doesn't really feel inclined to prosecute them. The current gov't got a bit too big for its britches and thought it could do the same with those in Canada, and is now paying the price diplomatically.

(disclaimer: I'm an American of South Indian origin)
