I'm generally an EV supporter, but this is definitely an issue.  In cold climates, see the battery problems above.  Also, see the drain on the battery from running the heater, which you will want to do when it's super cold outside.  And in hot climates, running the car's AC is a big drain on power.  We have family members with an EV in Tucson.  While it has a purported range of something like 200 miles, for 8 months of the year (when they need to run the AC in the brutal heat), it's more like 90 miles on a full charge.  Fine for a daily commuter, which is what they use it for.  But not viable for a long drive.  Not even viable for a day trip to Phoenix, really.

Last July we were in Vegas.  Stood in line for the taxi stand, and the next one up was a Mustang Mach-E.  Hey, I hadn't ridden in one, so I was gonna ask the cabbie a few questions.

He liked it, but said the range was absolutely terrible once spring rolled into summer.   As he said that, I noticed on the dash it had 56 miles left or something like that.  He said that in the spring he could get 250 or so miles out of a charge, but he was now getting maybe 100 or so in the heat.  Said it really wasn't suitable to serve as a taxi in the summer, because it took too long to recharge.  I'd imagine sitting in a taxi line with it being 110+ and the ac on is just destroying range as well.

I just wanted to drop in as I caught up thread that there were hot Venezuela women in need of housing. Being the great humanitarian I am, want to find out how to offer my home.

To keep on track with the thread I thought this nut ball was a grifter from the word go.

Turns out I was right!

Now about those poor Venezuelan women...

See, it's this kind of generosity of spirit that makes Surly great.

none of the negatives kept Wang from singing the praises of the Cybertruck.

Doesn't surprise me. He sunk a lot of money into his pride and now he's going to rationalize and justify it. We all do that in varying degrees. SEE: Texas A&M University--- Football Coaches, Years 22018-2023)

But as with most Tesla fans, none of the negatives kept Wang from singing the praises of the Cybertruck. “It’s a fantastic truck. The interior and build quality are definitely one of Tesla’s best. It makes me really excited for what future Teslas will look like.”

Given how long it took to get the Cybertruck out, and how long they go between model changes, me thinks he’ll be waiting a long time for future Teslas.

It should have said "it's not a great interior but our dogmatic faith in Elon demands we say something positive"

what a waste of money.

We now have enough data to definitively say that Tesla blew it on the Cybertruck range (not least this post which is consistent with previous data). There is no way - with all of the very public testing done by Tesla - that the engineering team did not know (long ago) that the real-world range would suck. They knew. And Tesla has an incredible engineering and manufacturing team so they could have fixed this. No question. So it seems to me that we can conclude:
1) Range sucks
2) Team knew long before release that range sucks
3) It is a big deal for customers
4) They could have fixed it but didn't

With these facts on the table (I think they are facts at this point) one has to ask why did Tesla get this so wrong? We have seen this before. It is a symptom of an organization where everyone is afraid to tell the emperor that he is not wearing clothes. It is a symptom of a company where bad news is hidden and bad data is reformulated until it fits a pre-ordained internal narrative. If that diagnosis is correct, Tesla is in serious trouble. For all of its accomplishments and incredibly talented staff, it will collapse in on itself unless this gets fixed. I hope it is a wake-up call to the board and the leadership. Warning light flashing IMO.

tldr: Tesla knowingly lied about the range of the cybertruck to protect elmo's feels.

if I didn't know better, I'd think that this "Elon Musk" persona was just a bit.

Seriously.  The character says the dumbest fucking stuff.  Like the Michael Scott of the Tech Bro world.  He can't actually be real.

https://www.britannica.com/story/were-the-nazis-socialists

Pretty good writeup on why the nazis were "national socialists", but it basically boils down to a propaganda play. FTA:

Quote

Over the following years the brothers Otto and Gregor Strasser did much to grow the party by tying Hitler’s racist nationalism to socialist rhetoric that appealed to the suffering lower middle classes. In doing so, the Strassers also succeeded in expanding the Nazi reach beyond its traditional Bavarian base. By the late 1920s, however, with the German economy in free fall, Hitler had enlisted support from wealthy industrialists who sought to pursue avowedly anti-socialist policies.

Elon really has got the brain worms, it's wild to see the decline in realtime

Congrats on your super-tough, rough and ready new stainless steel truck. Make sure to wipe up bird poop and bugs immediately or else it will corrode.

They used 301 stainless steel too, which is not meant for heavy duty exterior use. If they put a clear coat on it, it'd be fine - but Tesla is rawdoggin the cyber truck. Anyone driving a cyber truck on a salted road is gonna have a baaaaad time

Not sure you did this deliberately but thank you for reminding me of one of my all-time favorite South Park episodes:

But it's stainless steel so it won't rust I guess?

It's stain "less" not stain "proof" steel amirite? But no, 301 stainless will corrode over time when exposed to chlorides - like road salt. There are better grades of stainless that have lower carbon content and more chromium, but that's not what elmo put in his truck

So, in other words, it’s not really a truck in any meaningful way. It’s an angular shitbox that is 1000x more dedicated to form over function…and the form is only appealing if you’ve already got Elon’s jizz dripping down your chin.

Pretty much perfectly captures the era we’re in.

Sounds a lot like virtue-signaling to me. I thought Elmo Roark said virtue-signaling was bad?

Ed Zitron posted a couple screen caps from cybertruckownersclub dot com - here's the reported battery range. 206 miles at 100% usage/164 miles at 80% usage. Another reported 210 and 160 miles.

If you're towing something, best of luck at a charging station.
