I wasn't clear. A year from when they return to playing. So approximately 2 years from the time of injury. They almost always look stiff and a little slow for the first season back if they injured it preseason.

I do think he will be ready to log snaps at OSU. Whether they keep him out as a precaution though? Depends how he looks in camp.

It wasn’t just a simple ACL tear….he tore his ACL, MCL and sustained pretty good damage to his pcl. Almost blew out his whole damn knee. Luckily the pcl didn’t need repair from surgery.

This one was awesome.

It really was.  This was the first time in a while I sat and watched the whole episode. It's really interesting that they (Mack and GDGD) identified him as a real player when he was just a sophomore and that he really wasn't particularly polished or developed at all when they first saw him play. The line about, "OK, coach - but what is cover 2?" cracked me up. I always suspected there was a ton of potential (which admittedly just means "you ain't done it yet," - as the great man once said) there but for the head injuries. I feel like this interview vindicates that belief a little bit and all those concussions were a fucking shame. But, as someone else said, I'm really glad to see that he's not displaying obvious signs of CTE - because I really thought that might be an issue for him by now, even at this early juncture. Instead, he comes across as a funny, clever guy and I'm now a bigger fan that I was previously.

Also, the immediate chemistry with the younger Shipley is very interesting. We can only imagine what those two could have done but for injuries and atrocious coaching... Fuck GDGD. And fuck Shawn Watson just for good measure

The tOSU 247 board has a thread going about the upcoming game.  I few reasonable takes, but majority think they will roll and are better at nearly every position than Texas.

One of the better takes that has been posted numerous times is that we are apparently starting a true freshman OT.  I'm guessing they are talking about Baker, who's already been here a year plus.

Similarly, I remember a lot of UMGoBlog posts (and from the UM blog community as a whole) about how they were also better than us at every position and would win every single matchup ("DONOVAN EDWARDS WILL RUN FOR 300 YARDS because Texas has no one who can keep up with him - just like Reggie Bush did once. Texas will rush for -0.75 ypa because Graham and Grant. Kenneth Johnson will pick off every pass that Quinn Ewers throws - Ewers will literally be 0-0 for with 27 picks. Something something Loveland something another 300 yards.").

Absolutely spectacular prognostication, bitches. Hopefully, this turns out similarly. And more than that, hopefully those piss jug throwing fucks go 0-12 on the season and all of the very worst elements of that fanbase murder Ryan Day's To Catch a Predator looking ass before committing mass harikari. Apologies to the 7 respectful Ohio State fans. I know a couple of them post here but can't remember usernames for shit.  Y'all seem OK. Don't do the harikari thing but if you still want to kill Ryan Day, I wouldn't object

While I agree with you on Michigan, I feel it’s a bit different situation than with tOSU.

UM lost their coach, and a lot of staff, to avoid the NCAA (like they did shit.) UM also lost their big advantage, and no more signs to steal (once the comms were finally encrypted, but we played early enough in the season the non-encrypted comm situation wasn’t really out there. (How the fuck did the ncaa NOT give any consideration to that? This ain’t nascar!)

On top of them losing a lot of talent.

With tOSU, we pretty much only have the normal talent loss to factor in, and consider their replacements. Of course we can only look at last season tape, maybe the season before, to see a) what could be possible, and b) how much they may progress year over year. Need to take some other variables into consideration as well.

I think it’s shaping up to definitely be a marquee matchup, and could honestly go either way. It could come down to who gets the right break at the right time, in whatever form. A challenged call, turnovers, blown (or wrong) assignment, etc.

Being game 1 is a kicker. You haven’t had a sniff at getting the live game rust knocked off, even if just one game against inferior competition.

I expect a few mistakes, both from returning to real play, as well as a few nerves early on.

Now, tOSU has a similar situation on their hands as well. We lost some people, and they have to also figure out and estimate how well our replacements can perform. So pretty much we both start from the same place essentially.

With researching those players, on either side, it’s going to come down to how much accurate evaluation either team can do, along with realistic projections from research on last season and if they have one before that to establish some form of progress in capability to project the jump to this year.

It’s also going to come down to how well each program can keep it all locked down. Whether through spin in the press; what’s fed to journalists, and maybe we continue to probe for leaks, which would be wise to continuously monitor (I assume tOSU does something similar, but who knows for real these days, so I guess don’t necessarily trust their press.)

Barring unfortunate events in fall camp, I expect everything will be at the highest of levels and expectations, as well as all drills having some impact on preparation for tOSU, and of course for the season as a whole.

It’s going to certainly live up to the hype, I think we can all agree on that at least. Who comes out on top when the 4th quarter hits 0:00.0? It looks to ve a close one that could go either way. I’m expecting Texas to find a way, using the tools that we can, and really hoping we don’t have to get too deep into the playbook, or maybe have a handful of plays just for this game that we don’t use later. A bit easier to accomplish being the first game of the season. Then we can focus a bit more on the main playbook the next couple of weeks during the OOC slate.

Off that topic, but relating to OOC, have we considered moving one OOC opponent to November? NOT FCS, of course, but one of the non-marquee schools we’d normally play OOC.

Seems easy enough to do, since league schedules only come out less than a year prior, and those games are scheduled well in advance of that.

Those type of injuries typically take a year before really being back as close to normal. Unless he really knocks it out I expect him to be back in '26.

I think he'll be good enough this season to where we don't have a 1000 yd back. It'll be a committee, and Arch will also get his yards

Sark is going to have a 1,000 back. It's more part of his plan than great QB play. That 1000 yd back is what creates the opportunity for great QB play...  And with Texas now playing what feels like 17 games. 1000 yds is like 47 yards a game.

Take it for what it's worth, but IT (think it was Nahlin) said that Baxter and Wisner are already splitting first team reps.

Screw it, here's the whole thing.

Wide Receiver

Ryan Niblett was mentioned very early in a recent conversation after a good week that included a big play touchdown from the slot receiver position. Niblett’s role is to be a matchup hunter who motions in and out of the backfield. This play saw him motion out and catch a corner route for six. So far, this role appears to be more than lip service as we’ve heard Niblett’s name pretty frequently this offseason.

Speaking of making plays from the slot, IT continues to hear promising news on true freshman Daylan McCutcheon. Of the four talented true freshman he’s the most likely to make an impact this season, at least according to offseason intel. McCutcheon is very consistent for such a young player.

Sources expect Ryan Wingo to be Arch Manning’s top target with DeAndre Moore the top complement.

Edge

When Trey Moore returned to Texas we shared that part of the allure was him playing opposite Colin Simmons at times, rather than the due being in a straight timeshare. That remains the case.

Given Moore’s moonlighting at linebacker it’s interesting to note that Brad Spence is now moonlighting at Edge. With his background as a high school defensive end, Spence is a natural pass rusher. We don’t yet know if this is typical cross training or if there’s more to it.

Most likely to backup Simmons (other than Moore) is probably Colton Vasek who is “athletic, healthy, explosive” and poised to play a lot. Information on the former Westlake standout is as glowing as ever. Just. Stay. Healthy.

Zina Umeozulu seems to have a handle on backing up Ethan Burke and Lance Jackson should also figure in there this season. Intel points to Justus Terry as a D-end when the defense is in Base. That’s a great way to bring him along and extract value as a freshman.

Young Cornerbacks

IT was asked about the young CB’s this week so we put the query to sources. We’ve talked a lot about Graceson Littleton since right about the time he stepped on campus. Despite having the higher recruiting profile, we haven’t heard as much about Kade Phillips. That’s just a reflection of Phillips having Kobe Black and Jaylon Guilbeau ahead of him. “All he has to do is add weight and keep working. He’s an NFL cornerback.” Speed, length, and technique make for quite the package.

Caleb Chester is doing well, too. He’s viewed as a great program fit. Hard worker.

Fade to Black. When IT asked about coverage preferences for this season, we heard they’ll likely run more Cover 3 than last year. Part of the reason, “they have good cornerbacks in Malik Muhammad and Kobe Black and this will help bolster run defense.” That’s how it was put, with the source mentioning Black before Guilbeau. That’s going to be a good competition in August. It sounds like it’s already a good competition.

D-Tackle is Wide Open

Speaking of competition, I have no clue how to handicap who will start at defensive tackle. A week ago I guessed Cole Brevard and Maraad Watson. Now, I’m not so certain but it’s a good problem to have. From the sound of it, Kenny Baker appears to have a lot of pretty evenly talented players to work with. This week Hero Kanu was the first person mentioned at the position.

We’ve heard good things about all the defensive tackles so it will be interesting to see how this plays out. Who will be paired with who? How deep is the rotation? We’ll be seeking answers to those questions in August.

Hearing Kanu’s name, in part due to him trying to establish leadership in the room, is promising. You know he’s extra motivated for Week 1.

Running Back

“Baxter got straight to it. Once he was cleared he was going 100%.” After a spring spent covering the return of Christian Clark, now Baxter is apparently experiencing the same success. Now, he’s not 100% but he is trending in that direction. He is essentially already in a timeshare with Tre Wisner with the first-team offense. They’re followed by a large group that rotates evenly.

It’s important to keep in mind that Steve Sarkisian always promotes Baxter to the front of the line. You’ll recall he got the start over Jonathon Brooks in what was a major surprise two seasons ago. Like Ron Burgundy, Sark clearly has a soft spot for Baxter.

Guessing carry distribution for this season is about as hard as figuring out the DT rotation. For such a talented roster there’s still a lot of intrigue.

WR

I’m so happy Niblett decided to stay. I know a lot of people thought he might leave, but man—he can be a game-changer with that speed. Once he gets it between the ears and locks into just one position, I can easily see Sark using him like Jameson Williams or DeVonta Smith. He’s got that kind of potential to play himself into a draft pick. I saw him in high school—dude can go.

Corner

I love the battle between Black and Gilbeaux! I’m hoping Black locks down that opposite corner spot, and then Gilbeaux either splits reps with McDonald—which I think would be a good thing—or moves inside. At times, Gilbeaux was doing too much, so cutting his reps could raise his level of play. Either way, keeping him at corner makes sense too, especially since Littleton is too good to keep off the field—and I’m all for that.

I think a good run game makes playing QB easier, but doesnt necessarily mean great QB play. One reason I am a big Borrow fan is his ability under pressure. His passer rating is less than 10 pts lower with pressure, than with a clean pocket. Most QBs are 35-40 pts apart. That includes names like Mahommes, Allen, Hurts, etc.. How you play when the environment isn’t favorable is what defines great play from a player to me. This is an area I believe Arch can help improve the offense next year. Just think Bijan. He would make defenders miss all the time in the backfield. That was more impressive to me than watching Chris Warren run for almost 300 yards vs Tech with holes my old ass could get 3-4 yards

Ohio State knows what to expect from Texas, but OSU is kind of a wild card. They have new coordinators on both sides (though Day will have his stamp on the offense). Hartline was a bit pass happy his first time around. We will see what Patricia does in college. I am hoping Patricia over complicates the defense and it takes him awhile to find his groove similar to Wink Martindale at Michigan last year.

Patricia was a really curious hire given he's essentially been in a multi-year flameout since he left the Belichick/Brady bubble. I remember him having issues with players when he coached the Lions because he was such an asshole hardo, which you would think may not go well with college kids. He's a total wildcard like you said, but my baseline expectation is that he's a sizable downgrade from Knowles and he's working with less experience and talent on defense.

I would agree. Just highlighting that the OSU is the real wild card in this game. There will be 0 film on them. There is a chance Patricia comes out and surprises Sark getting the advantage. There is probably a better chance that OSU comes out a bit disorganized

Last time he was in official DC capacity in the league was around 10 years ago, right? Probably hard to draw any conclusions on what his defense will look like or tendencies because NFL has evolved a ton since he was last calling the shots.

Just two short notes this morning as we await decisions from Marietta, Ga., linebacker Brayden Rouse and Frisco wide receiver Jalen Lott…

1. Thank you to everyone who participated in the fundraiser for the Central Texas Food Bank last night on our episode of Talkin’ Ball. We donated $2,899 as a community to the organization that is helping people in the midst of the tragic flooding in the Hill Country. Again, I’ve always wanted this to be a place where Texas fans could be proud of, and there is no prouder moment than when we come together and do something like that.

2. I spoke with someone yesterday who believes Jack Endries may make a run as the team’s top receiving threat overall, much on the same vein as Gunnar Helm a year ago.

“He’s a little freaky,” the source said of Endries. “He’s athletic, smart, dedicated, all those things.”

Ok, but how good is good?

The source’s prediction for Endries

“He’s an All-SEC or All-American level guy, no doubt in my mind,” he said.

New coaches, new QB, first game... all of that.

Like many Surlys, I expect tOSU to be at least a bit discombobulated, and I expect that will be enough for us to take them.

I also expect them to join UGa in being a team we play twice this season.

Gonna be a helluva ride, that's a fact.
