He literally just tanked a shot at the playoffs for a slightly higher chance of not losing to Texas in Dallas. There is zero chance I would be playing Matter until he is actually ready to go. They could have endured another loss and still been ok if it meant getting right and winning out.

In hindsight, they really did. They knew what they had on the OL and presumably knew where Mateer was in terms of recovery. I didn't watch them before the RRS so I don't know what, if anything, he was lacking. He made some really impressive short to intermediate throws but seemed to be a non factor in the vertical game. I don't know if that's typical or if the thumb was impacting his ability to throw downfield. He also seemeed to just be overwhelmed by the moment and the pressure Texas was putting him under. Seemed to me that to the extent Mateer got them in trouble it was his mental game, not his thumb.

They had to know, like a lot of people expected, that it was going to be tough sledding on offense if they couldn't run the ball even wih Mateer. Their defense (and/or the Texas offense) was always going to have to win the game for them. Knowing that, if Mateer is limited, I don't see why you start him. You go out and lose a competitive game against Texas with Hawkins and it gets basically written off in playoff converssations (and in your fanbase, and re: Mateer's heisman campaign). You go out and win because you don't throw like eight interceptable balls, all the better. Instead you rush Mateer back, let this savior narrative take hold, and watch it flop in a game you were never going to win if your defense got worked like that.

Now the book is fully written on how to beat Oklahoma and they're staring down a brutal schedule with a crisis of confidence in leadership. What a self own.

These instant reaction recap videos with their entire bodies in the shot are so damn awkward. Really drives home why studio hosts sit at a desk, and often give themselves something to do with their hands.

I have gorged myself on Sooner podcasts this week. They're all awesome.

I find myself while loathing everything about the Sooners, I have a certain respect for them I do not have for the Aggies. Or their various social media guys.

Here was my favorite. It's 2 1/2 hours long, and ain't nobody got time for that. I think I made it about an hour in before getting satiated on OU tears. But the whole rant at the beginning about this being a culture loss, that this was OU's best chance to beat Texas for a long time to come, was incredibly satisfying.

Going 3-3 over their next 6 games is probably the best they can hope for.  It could get uglier than that if they implode.

So let it be written, so let it be done.10-yulfukkingsexy.jpg.753160faf42372e9fc64f3c01a7d9b64.jpg

They legitimately could go 0-6 to 2-4 over their next six:

  • @USCe
  • Ole Miss
  • @Tennessee
  • @Bama
  • Missouri
  • LSU

I don't see them winning any road games. South Carolina is the most likely; but is Mateer playing that game? Otherwise, Ole Miss and Missouri should beat them. I guess that defense + Mateer back might play LSU well enough at home, but there's no way I see more than two remaining Ws on that schedule. Does 7-5 do enough to retain Venables? Do they even have enough money to buy him out?

Buyout breakdown (AI summary, so who knows):
  • December 1, 2025: $36,294,182
  • 2026: $34.9 million
  • 2027: $26.2 million
  • 2028: $17.4 million
  • 2029: $8.5 million
  • January 31, 2030: The contract expires, and the buyout becomes $0

Ikard and Lehman both know football and do a good job with the recaps. That's really all I've ever listened to from them. Sounds like it's crimson-colored glasses with anything else though.

I've quoted the write-ups from the beginning pages for OU's offense, defense, STs and schedule. I think I whiffed on like one thing - Ole Miss not finishing the season ranked, as they definitely look like a top 15 team. Credit to Kiffin there.

Beyond that, what we witnessed on Saturday should not be considered an aberration for this season for OU. They're going to finish the season out of the top 25 and struggling to get to 7-5 with the back-loaded schedule. The SCar game is kind of huge.

OU is what I thought and said they were - mediocre, wildly overrated offense and offensive talent with an absolutely shitty OL, TE and WR group and they're truly mediocre at RB. Nagy lit money on fire with Ott. The defense is solid, led by the front 4, with questions in spots behind them. The schedule was going to be rough and they had to win early to have a winning record.

Meanwhile, they'd get overhyped by their own mouthbreathing idiots such as Ikard, Plank, and Lehman, and then the national media would follow. Steele had them 9th in his rankings and they were one of his top surprise teams. He can't help himself with OU.

Saturday was fun, and so will the rest of the season. Their posters on their boards are back to the spot where they're all as flummoxed as we are about why Joe Jon Finley and Demarco Murray are on staff, and wondering what happened to Bedenbaugh. Many are now condemning Arbuckle as perhaps more flawed than their media spinners were breathlessly proclaiming him to be this spring and summer.

Credit where it's due, you called your shot on OU and stayed consistent with it. I bit on the Mateer hype as September went on and while I didn'tthink they were a particularly good offense I thought they would be able to piece enough together in the passing game to make it hard for Texas to win. I don't think I appreciated just how bad their OL is though.

His thumb was bleeding which means they let him play before the incision was even healed totally.

I didn’t think the report was definitive that the cut was surgery related. I’m pretty sure the cut was on his hand, but I guess it still could have been from surgery

It was known even in the offseason that Mateer was likely going to have a really hard time with the Texas defense. He was great at Wazzu against lower competition, but the moment he faced great defenses he imploded. My theory all year is that he wouldn't have anything around him to help, and that is exactly what happened. The defense rattled him, and I would be willing to be some money that Venables is gone after this season, if not before.

I hope they end their season on a 5-game losing streak. Why not 7? Because I bet OU will keep BV if he's 6-6 but not if he's 5-7.

I was reading an article after the loss from blatant homerism (OU fan) and he said this

I have no idea if the gamesmanship from head coach Brent Venables distracted his team. Personally, it contributed to the uneasy feeling I had last week that people, including the team and coaches, assumed simply getting Mateer back in the lineup would be enough to power the Sooners to victory.

I def got that vibe too when they interviewed venables right before the start and he said he was gonna play with no limitations. You could tell how confident he was.

They did what they could in the offseason. They are limited. It's going to be a joy watching the rest of this season play out for them. I think we get Brad Vegetables one more time.

I think they beat South Carolina this weekend, they are the biggest train wreck in the conference compared to expectations. I also think they split their final two home games against Missouri or LSU. LSU's offense is pathethic and Missouri has really never been a team that goes on the road and wins a lot of SEC games. So, likely 7-5. Venables is fired, Arbuckle heads back to the G5, where he needs to figure out how to run the ball without a QB heavy scheme, and Mateer likely heads to another P4 team where is he underperform expectations.

I also don't see a coach worth a shit coming in and allowing Nagy to dictate personnel. Joe C needs to become the hatchet man before he leaves, because no new AD will want to deal with that type of dysfunction.

I am torn on this one. With all the movement in the coaching ranks already, where would you put OU in the hierarchy as HC landing spots?

Would you rather go to UF or PSU or OU? It is not like you have a Sark or Lanning, or Kiffin hanging out in the coaching rehabilitation clinic as a known top level candidate. Would OU fire BV to hire a retred like Jimbo?

ou at least grasps the new nil landscape at a basic level, and they got both recent and historical success

but they don't have the MONEY for the new nil landscape, and that's gonna relegate them to mid major status ultimately

I think if Skeletor can survive Joe C’s exit, all indicators are Joe C has been neutered, he’ll get another 2 years under the Nagy-Stephenson cabal.

Whatever happens this season, Skeletor will blame it on the Mateer injury. If Mateer returns next year and sucks, he can throw him under the bus. That gets BV in 2027. I could see a Sunday firing after the RRS.
