He broke the record for passing yards in a game at 419. Nebraska's home record in their last 75 games became 73-2.

It was a pretty bad Nebraska team.  They went 7-7.  Defense let us down a bit.  But Lord was a pretty damn good college QB, especially that season when he ran for 1500 yards.  He had a career night against us.

Offense played very well that night.  Passing game really worked.  Simms would either throw it to Roy Williams if he was open or check it down to Ivan Williams, who murdered them that night.

Texas has 6 players on the list.

#1a. Parker MF'ing Livingstone!!!

#2:  Anthony Hill

#11: Colin Simmons

#23:  Arch Manning

#62: Malik Muhammad

#64:  Michael Taaffe

#69: Tre Wisner

(Note:  All six of our players are guys Texas recruited out of high school, and developed.)

OTHER TEAMS

Clemson: 7 (#4: Klubnik, #6: Parker, #9 Woods)

Penn State: 7

Ohio State: 5 (#1: Jeremiah Smith, #3: Caleb Downs)

Bama: 5

Notre Dame: 4

Georgia: 3

Texas A&M: 3 (York, Moss & Reed-Adams)

Oklahoma: 1 (Mateer) (Teams such as Texas Tech and Georgia Tech have multiple players;  Oklahoma has one, and he's a transfer they just got.)

Curious to see how Bama does this year. A bad year, and they may be ass for the foreseeable future. I can’t imagine recruits sticking.

I believe DeBoer is an excellent coach. I'll be surprised if 'Bama has a poor year.

I would usually agree, but the warehouse might put enough of a premium on his ability to push BO&W in a locker to promote him. They just also have to auto-delete any emails he sends from his company account. Like giving the little brother a controller that isn’t plugged in.

I am not on the Alabraska train envisioned by @Wulaw Horn, simply because they are located in a region that is absolutely drenched in talent. It's why I don't see OU fully collapsing into decades of futility either. DFW and east Texas are too rich as buffer zones to allow the drift into the abyss.

That said, I also just don't see Daboer fading out at Bama in the near term, either. The guy is an excellent coach. His staff looks (mostly) really solid. They're loaded on defense, especially in the secondary. They can rock fight most opponents into 24-17 type wins if the offense doesn't click. With Grubbs there, I'm sure the offense will be fine as well. They have 2 NFL WRs, minimum, and multiple NFL prospects on the OL. I'll be surprised if they're not a playoff team and legitimate title contender.

Jesus Christ, ESPN. You can't convince me that Clemson team we beat last year, especially the defense, has 7 people in the top 100 nationally. Woods got flat run over by a mediocre run blocking interior line.

These lists always seem ridiculous.

Sort of? The hate was already there among a bunch of them. Osborne made some comments about Texas running things when the conference championship game was scheduled over Nebraska's objections, the league office was moved from Kansas City to Dallas, the SWC commissioner was named the commissioner for the Big 12, enrolling prop 48 players was disallowed and corn fed beef could no longer be served as brisket.

They did give Ricky Williams a standing ovation in 1998.

But yeah, there's full fledged hate now. You see it in volleyball a ton, too. I know volleyball is a big deal at Texas, but it's insanity level in Nebraska. Hence the attendance world record for women's sports. And they hate Texas. Coaches have been known to get divorced over it.

The real reason the B12 vagabonds hate Texas:

Texas B12 Record v. "Who the fuck cares"

Colorado       7-1 (88%)

Missouri        7-2 (78%)

Nebraska      9-1 (90%)

A&M             11-5 (69%, 5-3 in CS)

Total             34-9 (79%)

Agreed on Bama. Grubbs getting back in the fold and Milroe moving on will help get that offense cooking again. Saban’s fingerprints are still all over everything so that’s not going to just disappear overnight. They may drop into the second tier of annual contenders but I can’t see them reverting back to the Mike Shula days.

LSU has a ton of pressure on it this season imo. I think Nussmeier is widely overrated but after they whiffed on Underwood, what the hell is going to happen next season under center. Seems like they need a really successful year right the fuck now.

Daboer is a great coach. I really really like him.  Remember, Nebraska didn't fall off the face of the earth immediately.  They went down to 10-3 on the reg under solich and then fired him, then went down to like 8-5 under the next guy before they really bottomoed out. I see Daboer winning 10 games for them and losing in the first round of the playoffs and not being competitive for the SEC title for 3 years, the yokels getting agitated about it and him deciding to move on to somewhere he will be appreciated, before they settle into an 8-4 type existence for a long time.

You are right about the talent area in their area being helpful. Just like OU. But ultimately they are behind Texas, Oregon, Ohio State, (maybe Michigan- depending upon if their sugar daddy stays interested), probably Tech, aggy, Florida, Georgia, maybe the Domers and maybe a couple others in ability to pay.

Saban won a rigged game that 6 or 8 schools competed in and there is nothing fucking compelling about going to tuscalusa if the check isn't biggest and you don't have Saban running an nfl boot camp.  They are basically just Auburn now with better history.

I think there are 5 teams in the SEC that can be regular national title contenders -- Texas, LSU, Georgia, Alabama, and Florida.  I just do not see Alabama falling off unless they hire a terrible coach.  They hired a very good one post Saban.

OU, Tennessee, A&M, and Auburn are your second tier.  Ole Miss kind of is to as long as they have Lane and are willing to push their chips in on portal every few years.

What's OU's NIL story?  Are they lagging way behind?  Given the way TTech is leveraging O&G billionaire(s), you'd think OU could do the same.  They have a strong Pet Eng program, certainly in the realm of Tech's if not better.

Still can be pretty competitive but will never be top tier?  AD transition coming up as well, and they focus a lot of money in other parts of their program (ie softball).

Tech has minted more than a few billionaires and hundred millionaire types from the Midland Basin in the last 10 years.  I don't think OU has those types.

Some of the Texas Tech billionaires I know personally focus more on politics than sports.  But Sellers and Campbell certainly love their sports.

Vasher on Jammal Lord. Nebraska was already in field goal range to send it to OT too. Lord and Simms were co-1st team all-state QBs in NJ.

If I’m remembering correctly, Lord had been a godawful passer up to that point and that night seemingly couldn’t miss. I think I still have some chemical hard warmers from that trip in a drawer somewhere.

He did not have a great night passing. Hit a couple.  But he ran for like 250 yards at ten per carry.  We could not stop him.  We were lucky they decided to throw late because at a minimum, they could have tied it with a field goal.  Instead he tosses a pick to Vasher.  Typical soul crushing loss to Texas by Nebraska.  No matter which team was a lot better, I think every game save 2003 was close.  And Texas would win in some weird way.  I loved beating them.

We’ve talked all off-season about which Longhorn could be the team’s breakout star in 2025.

Arch Manning could easily fit that bill. After all, he has only started two games. But the national media already has him pegged as a Heisman front-runner.

How can I call someone who is favored to be in New York in December a “breakout” star?

So if I had to make the call today - and this is based on feedback from multiple sources across multiple parts of the program both inside and out - I’d go with Ryan Wingo.

The sophomore from St. Louis has been on fire the last three weeks.

He’s caught multiple touchdowns in a variety of ways - from absolute bombs to long catch-and-runs, to red zone contested catches.

He’s been good underneath, on the outside and deep.

When he first arrived on campus, I said he was the most talented freshman receiver I had seen at Texas since Roy Williams.

As Wingo goes into his second year, I am hearing no reason to shy from my original statement.

I think Ryan Wingo will be the team’s breakout star in 2025.

**

While I expect really big things from Wingo this year, here are a few others to watch, albeit on a slightly different level.

In other words, I think the play of the following players will pleasantly surprise you:

- Christian Clark

- Brad Spence

- Colton Vasek

- Graceson Littleton

I think Wingo has a really high statistical floor this year. There’s been a lot of talk about the deep ball this offseason and we haven’t spent as much talking about who can be our YAC-getter in the screen game (like back when we talked about who could take over for Keilan Robinson). It’s not a singular guy, but an important part of Sark’s offense. Wingo’s ability to run after the catch was his best trait last year. I’m expecting that to carry over. I bet he has 5+ catches in the first half against Ohio State with the majority being quick, short throws. He’ll also catch bombs of course. His ceiling is TBD based on how he developed in all the nuanced parts of the position over the offseason.

I’m in the contingent that is skeptical of Deandre Moore being a real high-end WR, but if he does make that leap it will be the first time that Sark has a guy that combines the gritty, JWhitt-esque elements with someone that is also a complete receiver. Opens up the possibility to really grind in 12 personnel with three skill position players that can contribute as blockers while also having 3+ guys that can create explosives without it being schemed for them.

I wouldn't be shocked if they lost two of LSU, @Louisville and @South Carolina. I get that the Clemson offense should be very good and they certainly have a lot of defensive players getting NFL buzz. The thing is their defense wasn't any good last year. The freshman Louisville tailback absolutely diced them and Sellers ran for 170 yards. I guess the theory is that Tom Allen is just that big of an upgrade on Wes Goodwin.

A few team notes from IT

Spoiler

How good can the offense be this season?

IT posed this question to a couple of sources, and they were mostly in agreement. The answer: better than last year, and it should be dominant against an average defense. That said, they also believe it could take a few games for the offense to gel.

One source noted, “New quarterback and wide receivers, the running backs are coming back from injury, and the O-line doesn’t have nearly as much time together as last year. But it isn’t a big drop-off, they just need time together.”

While the offense may need some time to cohere, another source added, “This year’s offense will ultimately be more consistent. Isaiah Bond and DeAndre Moore had their ups and downs (you could throw Ryan Wingo in there, too). They were limited at running back. Quarterback… Arch will be more consistent.”

And in encouraging news: “In the last week the offense has really picked up.” By that, the source meant there were far fewer mental errors, fewer penalties, and improved cohesion.

How dangerous is Arch with his legs?

“He’s more dangerous than Colt McCoy was. He doesn’t have the speed of VY, but he’s more than willing to put his body on the line. He’s a gritty dude. He’s not real fast, but he’s fast enough. I don’t want to say he’s Josh Allen, but he has the size, grit, and will take off to make something happen.”

Will the defense be better, and if so, why?

Both sources believe the defense will be better. One cited last year’s breakthrough and noted the unit was mostly dominant, though they did catch a break with the quarterbacks they faced. Still, expectations are incredibly high, and the defense returns plenty of carryover from last season.

The other source pointed to improvement at linebacker and edge while noting that the defensive tackles should be just as good as last year. “Anthony Hill is better in coverage. Liona Lefau is better against the run. There’s more diversity on defense. You have Ethan Burke playing DT and Edge depending on the package. That’s just one example, but there are a lot.”

What about the loss of Andrew Mukuba’s ball skills?

IT asked if Derek Williams could approximate Mukuba’s ball production. The response: “Williams isn’t like that. The guy you’re looking for is Jelani McDonald.”

If Mukuba was a 10/10 on the Mukuba scale, how would McDonald rate? “8 or 9.” That might be good enough.

Star is a point of contention among fans and one notable analyst

So far, it’s essentially been a mix of Jelani McDonald and Graceson Littleton, depending on the offensive personnel on the field.

One source noted, “I’ll just say the coaches trust Littleton a lot.”

Saturday’s mock game

The mock game is designed to make sure the entire team is on the same page when it comes to substitutions, personnel package swaps, transitioning to special teams, and more. It’s fast-paced with players shuffling in and out quickly, but they aren’t running plays or hitting.

When Young spoke candidly, everyone listened and responded. The season before, in 2004, the Longhorns trailed Oklahoma State 35-14. Brown opened the locker room doors and was about to give a halftime speech.

"'You ain't got to say s---, we know what the f--- we got to do," Griffin remembered Young saying as he cut off Brown. "It's hilarious now, but in the moment, you're like, 'Did he really just say that?'"

In the second half, Texas outscored the Cowboys 42-0.

Thanks for the link. There's some good stuff in that column, stories I had not heard before.

I dont mind him too much but when Pate is around every team is getting a reach around.

If Goosby's injury is a torn up thumb, it might cause some bigger problems, I would think.  Olineman basically grab the the jersey/inside shoulder pads of the dline/pass rusher when they are blocking.  If he can't use his thumb effectively at this point, it would limit his ability to lock-up on those guys.

Of course  this is all speculation, since we don't know exactly what the injury is to his hand. Do we?

The real reason the B12 vagabonds hate Texas:

Texas B12 Record v. "Who the fuck cares"

Colorado       7-1 (88%)

Missouri        7-2 (78%)

Nebraska      9-1 (90%)

A&M             11-5 (69%, 5-3 in CS)

Total             34-9 (79%)

Sort of.

There's a weird in state hatred of Texas in Colorado that stems from the fact so many Texans own so much of the land in their state. Honestly, Colorado football fans are a strange breed. The administration there goes hot and cold regarding giving the football program support and then pulling the rug out from under them, so the fans end up on an unpleasant teeter totter as to whether the team is going to be good or not. I don't believe Colorado fans think about Texas all that much.

Missouri doesn't think of Texas much at all. They have the KU thing going on, and they're too busy feeling rejected by all the SEC schools who don't even think they bring anything to the conference and wish they'd be kicked out.

Nebraska fans hate Texas with every fiber of their being. It's akin to Arkansas hate. It's not just about the record. It's this mythology they've created that UT is responsible for their program's demise. That's existential shit. Nebraska is one of those states that to be from there, even 2nd generation, means you're a Cornhusker football fan. It doesn't matter if you went to school there. It's like Constantine making everyone in the Roman Empire convert to Christianity. You're a Cornhusker football fan even if you don't follow football.

They'll cite different factors. Lack of population in the state. The increase in difficulty in recruiting out of state. The move to the Big 10. But given our human propensity to blame someone else for our own problems, the chief place they like to put the blame for their decline is on Texas. We came into the conference and ruined their ability to place dumb college football players on the academic rolls for a year, even though it was an 11-1 vote. The officials were bribed to let Texas win the Big 12 championship game in 2009. If they win that, they're allegedly still a prominent program. We formed the Longhorn Network which forced them to go elsewhere for conference membership, rather than sharing revenue equally. Never mind in every vote regarding revenue sharing they voted with Texas, because they were making a killing on selling pay per view for Tier III rights to the Nebraska faithful, but the amount the Big 10 was able to offer was going to dwarf any combination of revenue they'd receive from the Big 12. They still act as if their departure was UT's fault.

It doesn't matter that we haven't played them since they left the Big 12. That shit is handed down from generation to generation, just like Arkansas. Every little dirt farmer is tucked into bed with stories of the boogeyman, the Texas Longhorns, who ruined the Nebraska football program. It's accepted as fact up there. I won't go into all the dynamics in volleyball, because it will bore everyone to tears, and I've already lost a lot of people with my usual wall of text. But for the few of us on here that passionately follow that sport, the Nebraska hatred for us is immense (in volleyball I'd say it goes both ways equally in ways it does not in football, but that's neither here nor there).

And citing A&M's hate as having anything to do with 11-5, 5-3 in College Station, is an almost criminal misrepresentation. That's an institutional hate that goes way beyond football. As much as their brainwashing fish camp, their roots as an all male compulsory ROTC military college, the jizz jar bonfire pre tragedy, and all their other cult behavior, it's their shared hatred for Texas that bonds Aggies. That's not true to the same extent even for OU fans. We diminish their complete and utter obsession with us to  say it has anything to do with their record against us.

This really is one of my favorite all-time storylines of college football.

Tech has minted more than a few billionaires and hundred millionaire types from the Midland Basin in the last 10 years.  I don't think OU has those types.

Some of the Texas Tech billionaires I know personally focus more on politics than sports.  But Sellers and Campbell certainly love their sports.

Conoco and Phillips are Oklahoma home grown oil companies started in the late 1800's. Jed Clampett sold his fortune to Mr. Brewster in Tulsa, the 'Oil Capital of the World." Oklahoma is similar to Texas in that there are multiple producing formations, stacked like pancakes. There are no dry holes in Oklahoma; the only question is how much produced water you have to get rid of. West Texas Intermediate looks like the oil after a 2 year oil change. The Oklahoma Sweet oil produced around Ponca City, Conoco's home, is a golden-greenish-yellow color, and looks Quaker State 10W-40 that comes out of a can. It's the second most popular thing to come out of Ponca City, Oklahoma; Candy Loving being the first.

The smaller independent oil companies are the meat in potatoes in Oklahoma oil & gas production, many of which have had their fortunes since well before I moved there in the late 70's. Yes, there are plenty of trailer parks, just like any other place. But there is also an underlying wealth that is for them to know, and for you to find out about.

Harold Hamm was the youngest of 13 kids born to a share cropper, didn't go to college, and started his own company at 21. He is worth ~ $18.5 Billion.

Yeah, Harold didn't go to college, but I bet his kids did.

Make no mistake, there is a lot of money up there.

Well, it never ends for some folks, no doubt. I’m sure part of the daily routine at B&OW’s job at the warehouse is getting pushed into his locker by his boss, Hervé.

Is this unintentional humor? Is it a running joke about which I'm ignorant?
