We’ve reached the point heading into the season where Bobby and Gerry have worked each other into a handwrung fever pitch about their worries for Texas. It looks like they’ve convinced themselves of a loss to Ohio State and then a CFP appearance is fully at risk.

I view it as a good sign. I don’t buy for one second that “this is the best Ohio State OL in two decades”.

I’m glad you said this.   It’s an annual thing  here on Surly with some  to take their words to the bank. Same ladies who should be standing in line at Costco or Sam’s for their feminine products.

What’s wrong with Walmart and HEB?

I feel like we're getting a ton of pessimism mileage out of Goosby's injury. We're pretty healthy outside of that. Well, Mosley, but that shouldn't be a game changer. And if it is then that's a very bad sign.

Goosby in conjunction with Cojoe and Chatman.

Idk what he looked like on the stat sheet but Colin Simmons wrecked that fucking game last year. Unfucking blockable. I don’t see how they stay in rhythm if we make them have to drive the field. Idk where all this best OL in Ohio st history just fucking came from…. But I hope they have that shit all over the Texas locker room.

No OL dependent on a Rice transfer is the best anything, not even in Ohio.

Simmons, Moore, and Burke are gonna fuck 'em up.

I tend to lean heavier on the pessimistic side than toward optimism. The last decade or so of Longhorn football lead me down this path.

That said, if those choosing to lean pessimistic at this point, given what the Longhorns have done the past 2 years plus what's on the plate for 2025, they're hopeless. I believe there's a time for panty twisting and grinding of teeth, there is also a very acceptable time to throw on some burnt orange sun glasses, take a long sip of the Cool-aide and get excited. This is the correct time for being a Homer and happy.

We all follow this thing so closely that we nitpick our potential shortcomings to death while downplaying the fact that every other team is facing question marks too. 2022 (defense), 2023 (RB/OL/QB) and 2024 (secondary) all had different talking points preseason we were very uneasy about.

I also think some writers/fans are still needing to recalibrate what to expect out of regular seasons in this current landscape. I was listening to Paul Wadlington on a video this morning and he was talking about how 10-2 is now a very good regular season that will result in a playoff berth and maybe even hosting a first round game, which is not how people are used to being wired from the BCS/4-team playoff days. 3 of the 4 teams in the final 4 didn’t even win their conference and the other was Notre Dame. You just want to be relatively healthy and peaking at the right time, or have your wake up call right before the playoff like Ohio State last year.

I asked this question on OTF and I'll add it here. Is Nick Brooks serving an unannounced suspension for the Ohio St game? It would explain some of the reshuffling. Because he went from the backup LT in April to "We are definitely not playing him this weekend, to the extent that we're trying out fucking Neto at left tackle."

4 TOT, 2 Solo, 2 DR which is very solid numbers wise..

However, the box numbers don't tell the whole story of how disruptive he was in the game.

The Texas safety position is going unnoticed, while Downs is getting so much attention.  That's a good thing, because Texas has some players there.  There's going to be a lot of rust with both teams, and some acclimation going on.  But Texas is blazing fast, and some are going to have to learn.

It’s pretty funny that Casey fucking Thompson, throwing to freshman a pretty poor receiving outfit, has the highest deep shot percentage for any Sark QB since his return to college

That’s not really the point. We’ve focused on OT depth/injuries so much and convince ourselves it could the Achilles heel.

Meanwhile Georgia is starting Gunnar Stockton at quarterback and Notre Dame is starting CJ Carr, who by all accounts was outperformed in camp by the backup, and some people just gloss over it like it is no big deal.

Everyone has flaws. The days of these stacked Bama or Georgia teams with basically no question marks are basically over.

Long read.  I’ve been listening to podcast after podcast.  I’m fully convinced we are going to make a statement this Saturday.  The media is now shifting to picking Ohio State.  Texas has some big advantages in this game.  Ohio State is coming in with more question marks and being given the benefit of doubt.

Passing game:  Sayin, while talented is making his first start agains possibly the best defense he may see in his entire college football career.  Howard brought 5 years of experience and a dual threat ability to escape our pass rush in the semi final game.  He had two stud RBs to take the pressure off of him.  Sayin won’t have those and is going to be on a leash.  Day is not going to give the dude a green light to sling it against PK and this defense.  They will gameplan to get the ball out quick to Smith and rely on their run game.   PK is going to bracket Smith, load the box, and dare Sayin to get the ball out quick to their other WRs.

Arch is coming in being in his 3rd year and has been in pressure situations in big games.   His ability to run, his rocket arm, and his ability to read a defense is going to put Ohio State on skates.  They aren’t playing against Quinn where you could devote numbers to the run game with little to no fear of Quinn running or hitting a deep shot.  We are going to have a numbers advantage in the run game and their safeties are going to have to account for getting beat deep.  Endries should have a big fucking game with the conflict their LBs and safeties are going to be put in.

Run Game:  Texas has shut down nearly every teams run game over the last 2 years with completely different personnel at DT in both years.  This year may be the best group of run defenders from a depth perspective . Good luck to their OL going up against this front 7.   With out a mobile QB and 2 stud RBs, they are going to have to push this Dline around to make holes.  I don’t see that happening and I don’t see them surpassing 100 yards on the ground.

Texas is going to lean on the interior 3 guards and their strengths.  Ohio state is 1 deep at DT.  Tire them out and we are going to see a similar 2nd half like we saw at Michigan where we control the clock and run it right at them.   I don’t see us going deep and trying to beat their secondary in 1 on 1s.  Being on the road, we are going to see if they have enough bodies for a fist fight for 4 Quarters.

Coordinators:  new DC and new OC.  Knowles and Schumann may be the only 2 DCs I’d take over PK and I’d have to really think about it.  Well, Knowles isn’t there anymore.  You could argue Chip Kelly was the reason for their run late in the year.  He’s not there either.  Texas has a huge advantage here

Conclusion:  It took Ohio State a fluke 75 yard screen pass TD before half and a strip sack-TD to win against Texas last year.  They had the more talented team and that game was won over 2 plays.  Texas is walking in with an advantage at QB, defense, and schemes.  Unless Texas shoots itself in the foot with penalties and turnovers, I do not see how Ohio State is going to find a push in their run game to alleviate the pressure Sayin is going to put in if they are in predictable passing situations.  They also lack depth at DT against a team that is going to come in and run it right at you.  My prediction is 10-7 at half time and 24-17 final score.  The score will make it look closer but Texas is going to control this game.

Key to the Texas defense the last 2 years was being able to stop the run with even to light numbers in the box. It would be a massive deviation for PK to go into Columbus with a game plan to stack the box.

Last year Texas dared OSU to run vs light boxes and won the LOS. They didn’t employ a lot of bracket coverage. They sat mostly in a 2 high shell pre-snap and mixed coverages. The safeties were spinning around at the snap of the ball. Everything was about concealing the coverage pre-snap.

in games where the 2 teams have their strengths facing each other (our d line, their o line) the game is often decided by the question marks on the other units (our o line, their d line).....

OR it's decided by units getting less talk.....

hands and skills (running backs, receivers, secondary): push?

special teams: we better be better, obviously if we're not, big advantage jort

corches/system: advantage Texas

venue: them

noon kick: us

my feels 6 days out are that 1 or 2 of the above topics will combine for 50% of the result

the other 50% of the result will come down to these 2 topics:

linebacker

they return styles and simon, but what else do they have?

we return lefau, added spence and smith is possibly the real thing....

that would equate to a push, except we have an eraser in ant hill

advantage: Texas

quarterback

we have a manning

they don't

advantage: Texas

Texas 29

tosu 18

It feels like similar messaging you would hear from OU over the years. You just assume something is going to be good because that’s the way it has always been.

I think their interior will be solid, but I don’t see how paying up for the Rice LT in the portal and him not being able to win a job at either tackle spot is anything less than alarming.

Bobby has predicted Texas would lose every big non conference game in recent history. Ian Boyd has convinced himself our secondary is actually a liability and we will struggle to cover anyone.

It's possible that their own OL tackles developed negating the need for the Rice LT. Not saying that's what happened, but it's possible.

Possible, but I think the thought is a part time starter at Minnesota they brought in for mainly for depth might win the RT job outright.

I wouldn't call the secondary a liability, but for game 1, they are a question mark. Replacing Barron and Mukuba is not an afterthought. Guilbeau has it to prove. I feel better about Jelani McDonald's development and Taaffe's experience on the field. But they are tasked with likely their toughest assignment of the season against Ohio State's WR corps. Hopefully, the pass rush helps them out and makes Sayin's day a terrible one.

They didn’t have much returning at OT, so they overpaid for the Rice guy out of desperation. The fact he’s a JAG and worse than they thought isnt a positive for them now.

Cody Simon moved on to your Arizona Cardinals.

They undoubtedly have talent, but they lost more on defense that we did.  Collins, Broughton were 1 year starters at Texas.  Makuba a half year starter at Texas.  Sorrell may have had more starts than the others combined.

For example, their departing secondary starters logged over 6,500 plays.  Ours about 3,300.  Their 4 Dline guys that left had 7,200 snaps whereas ours were 5,200, although that didn’t include Lole and Norton, but they were only here a year.  They lost more experience at LB too.  Thats 15,000 game reps that walked out the door.  So they get younger, less experienced and a new DC.  It’ll be disappointing if they transition into the new year better than we do.

So we have more play experience returning with a massive push to fill our DT rotation to offset the losses there.  There may be an acclimation period but not sure that’s wholly different than OSU with a new DC.

At this point, Sark has demonstrated that players develop and improve every year. My confidence comes from seeing this play out every year now. I still do not understand how an Ian Boyd can sit here and still say we do not have the players to cover.
