This.  Texas is in play now.  And maybe, people will finally give a shit and campaign here.  Fuck shitty states like Ohio, Iowa, PA, and FL getting all the attention and the time of the candidates.

If nothing else, a bunch more people registered as voters that can and likely will participate more in the future.

This right here is bullshit.

Beto is a tall, good-looking guy. Other than that... what?

He didn't start with big name recognition. He didn't have some kind of record of leadership. He didn't have a history as a policy genius. He didn't even have specific and firm policy initiatives. He almost won a Senate seat in Texas with a charming smile, nice personality, and some progressive platitudes.

He was a really good candidate, but nothing irreplaceable.

Dems looking at this and thinking, "OH GOD THAT WAS OUR ONE CHANCE!" are pants-wetting morons. Take the ball and run forward with it to 2020 and beyond.

But what I think failed to take him over the edge was the hesitancy to go for the throat. Kudos for him for being principled and running the campaign he wanted, but as a wise internet poster who quotes @dill all the time once said, "When they go low.....we (democrats) go away and don't do anything and lose"

Just shows you how formidable an opponent he was and how much fear he conjured. He was a heck of a political candidate and as we all know, it won't be the last we see or hear of him on his rise to political wunderkind JFK-cum-Obama fame.

The "college educated" kids are dumb.  They thought the skateboard was cool.

This is accurate. O'Rourke was not a perfect candidate. It's true that he faced an absolutely terrible opponent in Cruz, but O'Rourke was nothing special. He simply worked hard and tried to connect with a shit-ton of people.

Texas is currently somewhere between the Cruz and Abbott victory margins. Valdez was even worse than Cruz as a candidate.

Beto raised a shit load of money that cranked out massive turnout which helped down ballot candidates. What an idiot wasting all that money!

Yep.

It could be argued that Beto did more to help the Democrats win the House than any other person.

This is correct.  I had three friends who all became American Citizens in the last year or so, and all of them voted Beto.  All of them are more on the conservative spectrum of economics, but as they are all immigrants (legal), they detest the current GOP stance on immigration.  That is their hot button issue.

I don’t think this is unique to either party. Beto’s most redeeming quality is that he wasn’t Cruz.

People got interested in him when he spoke, his energy and the fact that he traveled all over the state to meet voters.  He's a pretty articulate individual. His speeches and tweets made the rounds on the inter webs.  Nobody was posting Cruz speeches even here on Surly.

It’s funny how the horrible candidate Cruz was able to outlast Jeb’s arsenal and media darlings like Rubio, Kasich, etc., in the GOP pres primary. He’s an utterly dispicable human being, but their base likes him.  They came out to vote for him in droves this year.

Lost the battle, but the war is in full tilt.

What a wonderful country we live in.  Where politics is war and you HAVE to pick a side.  Soon we'll be lined up shooting at each other and the ideologues will be screaming us all on to die for the party.  Sounds grand.

No, we created infrastructure. We created a rolodex and relationships. The  process has been learned....it has been figured out. Texas will turn purple and then blue very soon. You are obsolete, but that is okay. Just take care of your ranch land and protect it and I'll call it even.

He doesn't have ranchland. The O'Connors have that in South Texas. He's getting none of that.

Why wouldn’t Cornyn be easier to beat?  Cruz is hated by libs but the base likes him for just that reason. No one likes or gives a shit about Cornyn. He’s a non-entity. He’s also a hell of a lot dumber than Cruz.

I believe an incumbent Texas Republican US Senator has never lost a reelection bid.  If you include Democrats, very few have ever lost.  It is very difficult to beat a US Senator running for reelection.  Most retire, freeing up the seat for an election ... then whoever is elected holds the seat until they move on to something else or retire.

Beto has the same things going for him that Obama did- young, cool, energetic and, most importantly, a great and charismatic speaker that can give good sound bites. Definitely underselling him when saying he “was nothing special”. Totally agree that his success is going to be hard to reproduce in the next election.

They came out to vote for the R behind his name, not him.

Beto is a once in a generation Candidate. Nearly pulled off the perfect race.

I hold no illusions that the Democrats will come remotely close to taking Cornyn's seat in 2020.

The Governor's race is more indicative as to where Texas is. Abbott won by 14 points. (and that was with Beto's coattails)

Image result for Debbie Downer

I think the Senate and Governor's races represent the extremes of possible outcomes in 2018. Interesting political experiement, honestly. Now, the trend is clear so that range will continue to move in a direction favorable to Ds to the point where a best-case scenario ala Beto can actually win in the next 4-6 years.

I was switching back and forth between Fox News panel and NBC panel when they were on, they didn’t  even try to hide bias tonight one bit lolz.    The guy on the left on nbc with the goatee wins the award for worst out of all of them by far....   He says we and they, gets visible upset and excited when results come in, its all pretty funny to watch.

Where have I heard this story before? I think we had a president like this once...

Back in March he said priority number one was jobs.....in this economy. Even Bill Maher looked at Beto like he was out of his element. He smartly quieted down on the real issues as most of Texas disagreed with his positions.
