I've recommended it before, but if y'all are ever in London, you have to go to L'Autre in Shepherd Market. It's, get this, a Polish/Mexican restaurant. Literally pierogi next to enchiladas on the menu. It's a riot.

I've got in my "recommended by surly" map.

He has the best words.  I’m not sure ‘groceries’ makes the list.  But your reasoning checks out…

I once went to a Mexican restaurant in Warsaw and they had enchiladas with a “forest mushroom cream sauce,” -3/10.

You know they’re feeding him bullshit if he actually brought this up on his own.

when my hispanic wife and I were just boy and girlfriend, in the early aughts, we went on a 3 week grand tour thanks to her dad financing two tickets to Europe for graduating college.

Anyways way too much detail.

We started in London and left from Frankfurt with many stops in between. Anyways, we made it to Nuremberg, saw the courtroom where the trial was held (surreal af), and we'd visited dachau and auschwitz on the trip and it was all a bit heavy.

Then we see a Mexican restaurant right in the middle of Nuremberg with a sign advertising margarita specials. Goddamn did we need a margarita, some enchiladas. The margaritas were fucking terrible so we had like a dozen because we fucking needed them. We were 22. Everything was terrible. But we were 22 and ate all of it.

Anyways, I had a great feeling i was going to get laid that night but we got back to the hotel, my wife bought a snickers and threw that up and passed out

I’ve a hunch Mexican food in Europe will improve in years to come. If it hasn’t already. And, bbq.

Exporting post oak wood is a growing industry. Got to be.

There's a creditable bbq joint across the street from the train station in Faro, Portugal - young Portuguese guy owns it, not an expat. It's where you change trains in the Algarve so I stop by there every once in a while. It's not even close to what you'd find in Texas/the South, but it's still pretty tasty.

Best Mexican food I’ve had in Europe is in Bratislava old town: amazing al pastor. Whole family from Veracruz, abuelo tends bar and talks about his amateur boxing glory and abuela runs the show with some bemused Slovak waitresses studying Spanish at the university.

The old man is something of a lothario, I gathered, and abuela runs the restaurant social media. A couple times she got fed up, posted long complaints about his errant ways (in Spanish) and announced the joint was closing and she was heading back to Mexico. Within a week there’d be a new post full of forgiveness and promises he’d change his ways, and assurances they’d keep dishing up amazing tacos. Better than a telenovela.

Czech has a decent BBQ scene, Texas style. Sort of reverse cultural exchange since Czechs and Germans pioneered old school meat market barbecue. I knew an expat who imported pellet smokers and sold them to the upper crust, a real luxury item. The best place in town didn’t do brisket but made more than acceptable beef cheeks, homemade sausage, and ribs. All peppery, good bark, and sauce only ok the side. At Thanskgiving they’d sell smoked turkey and fixings. And made watermelon margaritas. It’s good enough that I would eat there if it were in Texas, although not elite.
