Oh I agree.  But I think Traylor has always seen himself as someone who was destined for one of the big 3 in Texas - if aggy opens up, he will try for it, but unlikely to get it.  Baylor or TCU is a good bet for him.

Is it a big three? Tech is closer to Baylor or TCU than Texas and aggy imo.

Spinning back down to the second tier open jobs— some noise surrounding Franklin to VaTech.

Assuming the PSU thing hasn’t just wrecked him I think that might be the hire of the cycle.  Same recruiting field, less pressure to win it all, and an ACC that is pretty wide open. I think he’d turn them into a regular playoff contender and that place can cook pretty well when the team is good.

BO&W has nailed it again. Nothing says arrow pointing up like decreasing your win total by 2 wins per year for the last three years.

The new hot G5 guy.  Eric Morris is the new Jeff Traylor who was the new Tom Herman who was the Charlie Strong

Texas is not hiring a G5 coach if Sark left. Sark isn't leaving and he's not getting fired, so it's moot.

Here’s how I see it.  It’s harder than ever before to be successful at an also ran program.  If you have any good to great players they get promoted next year to the big leagues.  Eric Morris has now built two programs successfully and if he can whip some ass with scrubs then I can only imagine what he could do with superior athletes.

It's kind of it's own tier.  It's a big public university with a much larger and more passionate fanbase than any private school outside of Notre Dame or USC, but it's in an isolated place and doesn't have the statewide presence of the other two.

I've always assumed they were a pretty clear #3 in Texas.  It always seemed to me that it was UT (gap) Aggy (gap) Tech (big gap) everyone else.

Last night's UTSA game against Tulane looked like Traylor realized he could be up for a new job if he started winning again.

Helping cover up rapes also costed him his career.

The fact that more than a few people wanted Traylor to be the Texas head coach is embarrassing. Take away his inherited 7th year, 25 year old QB and his record is pretty average at best.

Is Kinne still going to move up this cycle or is TXST’s struggles this season going to keep him there a while longer?

Did he all of a sudden win 10 games?  Is he even close to .500 vs teams w/ a winning record?  There's your answer.

Whats the latest with Traylor? Is he gonna make the jump during this round?

He needs to hurry up and make the move.  UTSA is going to continue to be a poor, even compared to their G5 peers.  He's taken that program as high as it's ever going to go.  History says that if he stays there, he's more likely to be fired than poached in the end.  I don't see him getting fired any time soon, but it is ignorant to ignore history.  If you watch any of his pressers, that dude seems stressed af.

Eric Morris becomes the head coach at UT and proceeds to terrorize the fuck out of the SEC with a full on warchest.

Morris came into this season with a HC record of 11-14.  This season, he is 7-1 with zero wins against FBS team with a winning record.  0-1 vs teams w/ a winning record, although they are favored against Navy.  I think Navy runs them into the ground (#1 Run O vs #120 Run D), but we'll see.  I said it previously and stand by it:  The most likely way Morris gets poached is by a P4 that also needs a QB.

Maybe in terms of fan base but Tech doesn't have a markedly better history than any of TCU, Baylor or SMU. Their current NIL is good but I'm not sure it's really a much better job than TCU or SMU especially.

I think Tech's biggest problem is there will always be kids that want nothing to do with Lubbock.

So the Bobby Boucher governor makes a disingenuous argument about buyouts & taxpayers footing the bill, then forces out Woodward who had a $6mil buyout himself and puts a previously fired DV enabler in charge.

I heard Kirk Bohls say that maybe they would hire Lincoln Riley to LSU.

Not sure that would happen but I would love to see the reaction of the land thieves if it did!

I do not see it. LR left OU to avoid the SEC

Chuckle indeed. Traylor's ceiling is probably where he's currently at. Dude was coaching HS football like 10 years ago, but OK, lets  sign him up for the texas HC gig. What could go wrong? Why wouldn't CDC make that move?

Good for Lashlee,  he has a better chance of getting back to the CFP there than at Arkansas.

While this is true, admins likely buy themselves a bit of time from impatient fans by hiring a big name instead of rolling the dice on an unknown.

These decisions are oftentimes made due to budgetary constraints, though, right?

If an AD can afford the name brand, that's what he'll do because it's "safer". Otherwise, he's gotta consider an up-and-comer with more due diligence.

But also, 4 of those were internal coordinator promotions and Elko was previously DC at aggy

Key, Lea and Sitake were all alums, as is Kirby

TCU and Baylor are closer.  You can say the peaks are higher and the valleys are lower with TCU and Baylor while Tech consistently is a plus .500 team and sometimes much better aside from the Kingsbury/Wells hiccups.

SMU is a historically sub-.500 team. Aside from Doak Walker and the Pony Express years their post-war history is pretty bleak and that was reflected in the interest conferences showed them. I think they’re doing interesting and positive things now but it’s just not true that Tech hasn’t been a much better and relevant program for the past 75 years or so.

I never understood our university and fans obsession with having a coach with prior HC experience. Go out and hire the best football coach you can find, period.

Hell, Army had a legit shot at beating them this year.

I feel this cycle is odd because being a “big name” and having a decent resume might not be enough. It’s far more important that they embrace NIL etc and work well with donors. The old CEO model is over. I think there are tons of coordinators and assistants ready for this new world whose names none of us know right now.

This. But you have highly paid AD who won’t take a chance. It’s why Hollywood only makes sequels and superhero movies now. Most people that start making a lot of money start getting really conservative. Creates a ton of opportunity for other people with big balls.

I bet Louisiana leads every state in per capita great players. Maybe by a lot. And LSU has a stranglehold on most of it. Certainly under threat in the NIL world though
