He needs to hurry up and make the move.  UTSA is going to continue to be a poor, even compared to their G5 peers.  He's taken that program as high as it's ever going to go.  History says that if he stays there, he's more likely to be fired than poached in the end.  I don't see him getting fired any time soon, but it is ignorant to ignore history.  If you watch any of his pressers, that dude seems stressed af.

Yeah, those comments might be a last-ditch effort to negotiate more financial commitments from UTSA, so if a Baylor or Arkansas comes calling, he'll take it with a "hey, I tried to get more money into the program" line on the way out.

The model has changed.  I just don't understand these programs wanting some proven jackass like Meyer.  His methods are now obsolete.  You need to find a guy that can win at the lower levels and empower him financially so that he can get fire power for his schemes and run fuckers off the field.

100% a CYA when he leaves for a P4 program, assuming Arkansas/Baylor/Auburn comes calling this year

He's not CYA at all.  He's been saying this consistently for at least 3 years.

Exactly.  I really don't know why anyone reads into coaches comments at all as far as staying or leaving a program.  They aren't under oath nor forced to abide by what they may or may not have said.  Coaches have denied rumors and both outcomes occur, they've danced around them and both outcomes occur.  A coach denies a rumor and we post the Nick Saban quote about not leaving Miami.  Then when a coach doesn't deny we get all worked up because he didn't deny it.

I cannot figure out what he's mad about and what he thinks constitutes libel. He's mad about the likely new president, okay. He appears to be mad about Brian Kelly's firing but doesn't mention that, he mentions the AD, and something about Jimbo's buyout, but it's true that the AD was at aggy when Jimbo got his contract, so what's libelous? He sounds like a rambling old man at this point. If William and Connolly actually file a suit for him I suspect that would tell what he's actually mad about. I also assume they would represent Woodard, not sure what Carville's standing could possibly be.

Okay, so it looks like Woodard was already at LSU when Jimbo's extension was made, but his original contract with Woodard was fully guaranteed with no offset (unless google ai is wrong which it very well could be), so if that's correct, he should still take some blame since the term was already out there. Plus, I'm not sure how libel works when the facts are easy to verify, which is why the "actual malice" standard is so high for public figures. The media clarified it already. Woodard is also getting a buyout so what's the big deal? If he's really a good AD he should have no problem finding another AD job. This still sounds like the ramblings of an old man. Fine to be unhappy about the situation but lawsuit threats sound empty and strange unless there's something else going on that isn't mentioned in his rant.

It's truly a stupid game initiated by sportswriter morons. Every time a coach in question appears in public, they're asked about leaving. The coach has to think about his team at the moment and their season. Of course, he evades or even lies. If he says, "I'm only concerned about this season and this team," which is true, that doesn't stop moron parrots asking the same question over and over.

Then the moron parrots feel like they have a scoop when the coach, gasp!, actually takes a better job. "He lied!" Fuck you, moron.

I expect Arkansas to offer. Being that Traylor spent a lot of his early years in East Texas  not too far from Arkansas and he knows the small schools who have those diamond in the rough type recruits.

He's not a really good AD. But now that the Governor of the State inserted himself into the situation and said the guy whose job it is to select the head football coach will not be part of the decision to hire the next football coach, things are....... complicated. If he hadn't said shit, Woodward would be forced to take a job at Texas State or some bullshit like that. But now he can say "no one will hire me because the Governor of Louisiana - who knows nothing about running a college athletic department - talked shit and now it's impossible for me to find a job"

Carville doesn't like Landry because politics, and Woodward is a useful idiot to fuck with the Governor.

No, but the federal highway money the state receives each year does.

You think they would skip out on new bridge construction if they had a chance at getting Saban?

Judging by the state of Louisiana highways that federal highway money was grifted somewhere else long ago.

They need a new source of federal money to steal for the next coach

I keep seeing these incredulous comments from the talking heads like Herbstreit where their voice gets high and they shake their head and say "where do these schools think all these great head coaches are going to come from???".

It's not the schools, its not the ADs. The reason the carousel is crazier than ever is because the $$$ controls the programs now. The guard rails are off. The donors no longer have enhanced access and influence over the programs. They ARE the programs. Their $$$ is the oxygen the programs use to even breathe. You cant field a competitive team without them. And if they want a new coach, they just make the phone call. There's no such thing as telling them no. If they pull their money, your program implodes and you can't even put together a competitive roster anymore.

Will they invest or not? Thats the only question that matters anymore.

In their defense, if they are donating multiple millions every year, they rightfully want a say. NIL and the fierce need for money changed everything.

Of course. I think we just need to remember this is how things work now. The coaches can bitch about it all they want, but they dont have a choice anymore. You want that 5 star QB to help you beat your rival or not?

I'll be absolutely shocked if Saban comes out of retirement bc he's got nothing left to prove. He doesn't need the aggravation at this stage in his life. Why would he want to insert himself into the LSU shit-show?

His great-great-grandchildren need a bigger trust fund?

And he knows there is no way he'll sniff the same level of success. Everyone gets to cheat now, talent has flattened out, and he can't stack depth like he used to. Vanderbilt, once his free space, was a top 10 team 72 hours ago.

Yeah, NIL dramatically altered the landscape in a lot of ways. Some very positive in that former doormats like Vandy and also rans like Tech and ASU do have the capability to run with the blue clippers, to a degree. I think, broadly speaking, it's created more parity across a select group. I do think that group is bigger now for a chance to complete.

That said, on the down side the haves really have and back door deals that Saban and Alabama lived on just don't exist like they did prior. Mainly because you can stack talent 3 deeps who are college starters much less NFL caliber, particularly around the lines where Saban and Bama always dominated. Saban saw the writing on the wall and GTFO while he could.

I don't think hed come back because there's a very real chance, no matter where he went, for his legacy and mythos to be tarnished. Add to it, the additional strain and work required with PR and such for the HC, I dont think it would even interest him. A HC isn't or really shouldn't (imo) be an Xs and Os guy anymore. The consistent winners will, I firmly believe, end up being the OSU model. HC manages the program and "character" of the team, not what happens on game day. (Aside from ref shenanigans and bullshit - I'm looking at you Kirby)

I never say never, but the first question I always ask myself in these types of things is Why. Why would he.

If someone can provide a good answer to that question that isn't "money" because while all HCs like money, that was never Saban’s only motivation. As such, I can't come up with any good reason.

The theory is that a hire like him will immediately unlock booster cash and excite the portal to make an immediate run at the whole thing. And that conversely donors will not be energized by an unknown.
