I think we are beyond the point of wishing this as it seems like Russia is fucked. I'm honestly hoping for them to withdraw with as few casualties and lives ruined as possible. The quicker they just withdraw across the border the less lives are ruined. Russian society is being held hostage right now, and while they aren't blameless I hope that this is the start of a change for them. While they undergo that change we should exclude them from everything economically except food and basic necessities though. Make your bed and lay in it.

I'm starting to think Putin should just withdraw all troops overnight, and then show up at the next UN Security Council meeting and be all like "what? are you guys still mad about that? I thought we each got one oopsie invasion thing? Is that not the case?"

My guess is you never see Putin or Lavrov outside of Russian borders again....

Maybe whomever throws the coup on old Vlady will just tie him up and drive over Kyiv and just drop him in the middle of the town square and drive off and just the Ukrainians do as they please.

Some despot will be ready to welcome them with open arms

Sure, but it better be a despot in a country with extremely good security and control over its borders...

So all these weapons are pouring into Ukraine from disparate sources in the West, but who is training the Ukrainian troops to use them? Do M777s come with an instruction manual written in Ukrainian?

They're paid actresses. This was the trash after the parade. If they were really family members do you think they'd trash their relative's pictures like this?

Jack Nicholson Yes GIF by The Taboo Group

Those kids are going to wind up in uniform in Ukraine, but  would like to see a lot more civil disobedience *and* the state media publicly calling them out on it, letting everybody across the country know that there is resistance to the war.

I mean, I'm no master strategist, but if I was Russia......maybe I'd stay the fuck away from Snake Island for a little while?

(Ignore the aholes above.)  We are bringing officers and NCO's to Germany, Poland, etc., and training them.  Said trainees go back to Ukraine and train everyone else.  I am told if you are proficient on the com bloc artillery, learning the western machines is not real hard.

The Black Sea fleet maintenance program is in need of a major overhaul.  They can't seem to stop having accidents.

I would like to point out this ahole above literally provided the same information you did in your post. Way to not read the thread either, ahole.

Nobody has gotten everything right but Michael Kofman has been more right than most.  He doesn’t tweet a lot but he’s always worth checking in on.

Thread: Russia’s options besides general mobilization which is unlikely.

The interesting bit, and I've read this elsewhere, is how shitty even just their basic/intro training is, and how much of a drain their advanced training is on their permanent units, because a lot of the advanced training is done within the units that are currently in Ukraine.

Basically, Putin needed to mobilize last fall.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has been on a wartime footing from the start (and even was mostly there before the invasion).  Of course, they have had 8 years to get ready.

I hope he is sick, and I hope it hurts.

Wonder if it ties into this - he normally plays in this hockey game and has only missed it once, and this time he gave a video address from the same resort where the game is being held.

The status of Russian President Vladimir Putin's health is again under speculation after he missed an ice hockey game that he typically plays in.

Rumors surrounding Putin's health have grown since the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February in part due to videos that have emerged showing him seemingly appearing shaky or sick. Several media outlets have recently suggested he may have Parkinson's disease, though such rumors are not confirmed.

Quote

More questions arose after Putin did not appear at the Gala game at the Night Hockey League National Festival in Sochi on Tuesday night, even though he was "expected" to play. The president had previously taken part in the ice hockey league that was established in 2011.

In early May, Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin press secretary, announced the Russian president would not be attending the game. Instead, Putin gave a video address to the participants and guests at the festival, reportedly from the Black Sea resort where the match was taking place.

Quote

The New York Post reported that Putin appeared to have dark blotches on his face in the video address to attendees at the match, adding to the concerns for the Russian president's health.

More in the series “translating Russian diplomatic threats.”
https://www.politico.eu/article/russia-threaten-military-technical-retaliation-finland-nato-bid/amp/

Quote

Finland’s accession to NATO will cause serious damage to bilateral Russian-Finnish relations,” the Russian foreign ministry wrote in a statement. The warning came in response to Finland’s leaders on Thursday officially endorsing the idea of their country joining NATO, a historic move that sets the stage for a membership application in the coming days.

“Russia will be forced to take retaliatory steps, both of a military-technical and other nature, in order to stop the threats to its national security that arise in this regard,” the Russian foreign ministry said.

“Military-technical steps” is as ambiguous in Russian as it is in English and is absolutely everywhere in Russian angry statements on every issue. It is clearly in an interagency style guide in Moscow.

The Ukraine invasion was “military-technical steps” before it became an actual “special military operation.” But asshole fighter pilots buzzing naval vessels and Facebook trolls are also military-technical steps. So is turning off gas and so are cyber-attacks.

In Finland’s case, these steps will almost certainly include announcing that the Iskander missiles we know are already in Kaliningrad armed with nukes, are actually in Kaliningrad and nuclear. And some cyber attacks and Facebook trolls. That’s the spectrum we are on as opposed to “invade with 200,000 people and then die.”
