The Supremes

The best that we can hope for in the Ginni Thomas story is that both parties agree that judges shouldn't have a lifetime appointment. Both sides understand that the lifetime appointment helps and hurts their party so why not give the parties more control by either creating an age and/or term limitation.

I've always thought a 18 year term is sufficient.  This would give us a new justice every 2 years. And the term is tied to the seat not the individual.  A justice dies/resigns with 5 years remaining, the replacement is there for 5 years only.

The one flaw in this plan is that the Senate isn't a fair representation of America given that CA and WY have the same votes. It's not hard to see potential of the GOP to hold a Senate majority even if they have much fewer than 50% of the public vote.

18 years is a long enough term and takes the guessing out of when a justice will step down. No judge should be appointed for life.

ill go one step further. Divide the Us into 11 regions by population, every region gets one spot on the court

Are y'all seriously discussing term limits for justices?  While we're at it, why don't we talk about ranked choice voting and banning gerrymandering.  Yeah, that's the ticket!  The only way any of these things happen is if the republican party is utterly destroyed and shunned from society.  That shit ain't happening.

I hate to say this but the Democratic Party leadership goes out of their way to accommodate Republicans and it’s a huge part of the problem. (Legacy media does this too.) Are they enablers, complicit, or incompetent? Doesn’t really matter because the consequences will be the same. SAD!

Term limits for old people? No way! Congress only ever agrees on two things recess and a raise. The SC runs off of clerks mostly. What I fear the most are the midterms bc even though I grew up Republican I am scared shitless of that party right now and I fear what will happen in November. I can’t be the only person that grew up this way that absolutely is afraid of that party right now in its current form.

I am deeply troubled by the questioning of this nominee and it’s absolutely sickening to me to see someone as accomplished being subjected to this bullshit. For one, you are replacing a like for a similar like. For two, she is absolutely the best possible replacement. For three, it just further solidifies to me why the Republican Party is a dumpster fire.

Scalia sailed through Senate approval with a 98-0 vote.  Some Democrats didn't want to oppose him because he was Italian-American.

You could call that "political", I suppose, but there's a difference between not opposing a nominee because of their race and opposing them because of their race.

literally (40 years ago) a different political time and age.

Welcome to the CR librul cabal, your sorosbucks are in the mail

I’m not a liberal man. Does no one remember that SNL skit with Mathew Modine about liberals and he was running around like a fugitive? I can’t be associated with any group. Lol. Even though I suck at life and acknowledge this I am still an original.

Thank you. I’m not hanging out down here because I am trolling. I’m deeply concerned about the Republican Party. I haven’t gone so far as to cut off family members but I have a strict no politics rule with certain people now. I’ve admitted I do not like Biden. I don’t like Kamala but I also see the fucking alternative and it’s scary to me. I don’t like socialism. I do not want or like some of what’s being floated about right now policy wise. But I will take those and then some if it means some kind of Contract with America type bullshit that Newt was trying to pull in 1994. I have zero hope in the Republican Party such as it is and am frankly embarrassed by them. I am embarrassed that people I know and care about worship at the bullshit “altar” of Trump. This fucking guy couldn’t give two shits about them unless he can make money off of them..:they are just whores to me at this point.

Bork's confirmation was the exception because he had been such a political animal in his career. Since then, the Right has decided to attack as many Dem nominees as payback.

Bork did not support federal anti-segregation laws and didn’t believe women were protected by the 14th Amendment. The right turning him to a martyr whitewashes how shitty of a person Bork was

Hell, it sure is. But especially when it's because you ran him over instead of due to natural causes like illness and old age....

And don't get me wrong, I 1000% believe that if the GOP had the votes and one of the liberal judges were in the hospital or sick, GOP folks would be giddy and about that person dying so they could replace him as well. Heck, that's exactly what happened with RBG-- wouldn't be surprised there were ad-hoc bbq and cocktail parties thrown in backyards all across Kingwood and Plano and Georgetown the night she passed.

I guess we've always treated a politician's life as conceptually expendable, depending on the team.

Ginni Thomas could have beliefs different from her husband. And he doesn’t have to explain or condemn his wife. But that being said, we shouldn’t have a Justice that has a high probability of wanting to overthrow the rule of law. He should be expected to make a statement affirming his believe that the 2020 election is settled.

That’s complete horseshit.

If you think that didn't happen, then I envy your blissful ignorance. I really wish I didn't know, and understand, what's happening in today's world. It's soul crushing for someone who wants to see the best in everyone. It's just not the reality we live in.

I can't imagine what sorts of horrible shit Sam Alito is planning right now. That is not a man who is just going to sit by and let Ginni fucking Thomas's lunacy and her husband's desire to cover it up steal his crown as shittiest SCOTUS justice. He's cooking up something diabolical, something that would shock Satan himself to his core.
