Did they teach you the word "abortion" is in the Constitution?

Originalism, the dumbest of legal theories.

Let’s list all the other things that are not in the constitution, shall we? Or even better, let’s list things that were in the constitution, at least 3/5ths of them.

The picture that had been floating around was just the 4 ditch pigs on the left.  Please, don't anyone zoom out any further.

No one ever said that it did, and it doesn’t have to, either. You’re really bad at this.

Did the Supreme Court have an option to carve out rape, incest and medical reasons for abortion in their ruling?  Isn't that something that could have been protected at the Federal level?  Because if those were in place, and they were truly going after only elective abortions, I think the decision would have been a lot more palatable.  Do we need Congress to pass a law to protect those circumstances, and then allow the states to choose at what point the elective abortions are permitted?

Do wr really want the Supreme Court actually writing laws?

While we're at it, maybe y'all can also show me where it says an individual has a right to own a gun.

Oh their explanation for that was so pathetic it was comical.

“Well that line about the well regulated militia is a prefatory clause.”

”Really? So what other amendments have prefatory clauses?”

”Well none. It’s only in the second amendment.”

”I see, so it’s not that the well regulated militia  part was necessary to the amendment and you’re just using that as an excuse?”

”Nope! Antonin Scalia said so, so it must be true!”

I haven’t read this thread because I don’t want to overdose on rage.
But lemme tell you—we need to give the women of America a lot of credit for not going out and burning it the fuck down.

Ladies, burn it. I’ll provide the refreshments and watch the kids. Let me know when you expect to be home and I’ll have your bath drawn and dinner made.

Dude, have some respect. Those women are in a band. Haven’t you ever heard of the Menopausal Karens?

They first broke into the business with their big hit I wanna speak to the manager, which was actually the B side of You call that a latte, you lazy minimum wage-earning Hispanic barista?

But their biggest hit was, of course, I’m calling the cops because you walked your dog while black.

And who could forget the classic Speak English, bitch! That one was actually inspired by the one on bottom left going through the traumatic experience of being 3 spots in line behind an Arab millennial talking to her 90 year old grandmother at a Target in suburban Dallas. She still has not forgotten the experience of when she couldn’t figure out if she overheard the word “Allah” or “Holla.”

There isn’t a vast difference.  Unless it’s you or your partner involved, it doesn’t matter, it’s none of your business.  A woman should be able to have control over her body.  Period.

The difference being that in some cases of miscarriage or other pregnancy complications, an abortion is required to save the mother's life. Elective abortions by definition should not be required to keep the mother alive. I think that's a pretty important distinction to make and codify into federal law.

I can't believe some states will no longer have protection for at least medical reasons, but that is happening now. It seems like an easy law to pass in both the House and Senate right now, and would save many women's lives.

None of this is actually about babies being born, so no, the distinction doesn't fucking matter.

I love it when people try to advance popular twitter arguments here.  It's like being in high school and writing a "check yes or no" note to a girl because it worked so well in 5th grade.

You are missing the entire point.  This isn't about life, it is about control.  The cruelty IS the fucking point.

No. Fuck off with that.

Not every abortion is about trauma and tragedy and using that framing plays into the christofascist’s hands.

Women are humans. Humans have bodily autonomy. Ergo, women have bodily autonomy.

A women in her second year of college shouldn’t be forced to upend her life to give birth any more than a 14 year old rape victim should.

Just because one is more sympathetic than the other is nonsensical noise designed to obfuscate the issue.

My 20 year old daughter should be able to have sex and go to college and go to law school and build her life and have children when and if she so chooses. She shouldn’t have to be raped or have a life threatening pregnancy in order to decide what to do with her own body.

my god yes!! 🤬

and girl. god forbid your 20yoa daughter ever needs a choice... but if she does, remember me in CO. i wasnt kidding...as soon as i have a home i will make it available to help!

Define militia.

Should be defined in your State Constitution. Usually controlled by the Governor. A bunch of jackasses with guns who want to overturn a free and fair election, it ain’t.

I've always maintained that the people against abortions aren't so much for saving lives, but for punishing young women for having sex.  I know there's rape and other uninvited sexual aggressions out there, but by and large they are after those who are having sex when they aren't.   They relate it to the hairy legged free loving hippy chick.    They are supported by those guys like Cruz and Kavanaugh, who just didn't have it when it came to finding women to have decent sexual relationships with.   Penis size, looks or other insecurities drove them to the misogynist side.   This is a punishment to all those women they wanted and couldn't have.

Those men often devote themselves to business or politics, make a lot of money or gain power, then find young women to have sex with.  Then their wives sit at home with the pool boy, which is ok, until the sugar daddy is exposed as a philanderer.  Then the wife becomes the woman scorned, and in order to save pride, they go after the 'homewrecker' and once in a while the cheating husband too, but always the side piece is attacked.

So much porn is violent porn, nearly always against the woman.  In an odd way, this is an extension of that.

All of it has to do with punishing those engaging in sex for pleasure and curtailing it.  Starts with the churches (rhythm, abstinence) and just grows from there.  Next will be same sex relationships and then contraceptives.

I'm not saying this is the full underlying reason for this vendetta on abortions, but I'd daresay it's more this than saving lives.

And the thing is, it’s never been about “life” with them, and we need to be honest with ourselves and with people who take that position. For the most part, so-called “pro-lifers”:

-Support the death penalty
-Supported all of the death squads that the Reagan Administration supported in the 1980’s
-Are against all or most measures of gun control
-Are against nuclear weapons control
-Are against environmental protections
-Supported the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq
-Support the Israeli government’s policies in regards to the West Bank, Gaza and the Golan Heights (all under some bizarre make believe story about Armageddon, which is literally about global death)
-Oppose single payer health care and everything that’s attached to that (obstetric care)
-Oppose social safety nets that would help economically disadvantaged children
-Oppose mandated paid maternity leave (and the few who do support it do so with bare ass minimum time limits)
-Oppose birth control
-Oppose sex education
-Support punishments for LGBTQ lifestyle decisions

Yeah, “pro life” my ass. That’s a canard, and it’s the abject failure that the immoral teachings of the religious right Have.Always.Been. If you want to get a sampling of what that sentence means, consider that the states most in favor of “abstinence only education” are also the states that rank the highest in terms of teenage pregnancy, repeat teenage pregnancy, and teenage abortion. So when they tell you that they are pro life, understand that whatever conversation you’ve been having with them at that exact point has lost any purpose and you should cut them off by simply saying “you are lying.”

Would agree it's more about punishing young women for sex. Women with money will still terminate any unwanted pregnancies though. Unwanted poor kids will place stress upon society.

Most laws in this country are really about punishing people for having the audacity to be poor, so this tracks.

@immamac - what do you think about a sticky for posters who live outside of Texas and are willing / able to host anybody who needs reproductive care? @PenelopeWitherspoon (NY obviously) and @mchookem (Soon-to-be CO) have mentioned this. I'm in CA and when the news hit Friday one of the first things my wife said was trying to figure out how to help others who don't live in places were abortion or other care is possible. I image we are not the only ones.

Oh and the republicans even think so. It’s just that where as pro-choice people tend to think of it as a Red Keep (no pun intended), the republicans tend to think of it as either a Harrenhal or a Riverrun.

100%. If you listen to most pro life speakers, they blame “promiscuous” women within a sentence or two after their opening comment about protecting the unborn child.  And you definitely never hear them blame their sons for participating in the pregnancy.
