Beto's jumping into the race is probably the best thing Abbott could have hoped for...

Democrats in Texas need to get their shit together and have an actual plan / candidate before things are ever going to change.

It's just like the California Newson recall... lots of people are on board until they find out who their other choice is.

Beto may and likely will lose, but he's the best organizer Texas has for turnout and registration not named "Donald Trump" in the past decade.  No one else comes close or has even tried.

If his being on the ballot at least helps downballot, that's a win.

100% true. And to me that's the only benefit of a run against Abbott- Beto's people would have the opportunity to build an actual statewide party org.

This is true, but there is a risky way to combat that. The problem with the counter strategy is that it's simultaneously the only way to win but also the best way to lose 80-20. Basically once the Republicans start those ads respond with an ad campaign of his own showing images reminiscent of school shootings, dead schoolchildren, guns killing kids, etc. Then close with a well crafted line saying something like "They're right, Beto O'Rourke doesn't want this to happen anymore. Why don't they agree?" Something like that.

It's an extremely difficult thing to do right (I couldn't for sure). But if it hits just right it takes that issue away. If it hits wrong then everyone in the state hates him and he's done. So in the end you're right, he won't win.

Show Beto dove hunting first, blasting a few doves out of the sky while his good-looking dog chases them down.  Then turn to the El Paso imagery.

Beto will never win an election in Texas for the forseeable future after the gun thing. That is just wasted time. The GQP will run endless commercials on loop with him yelling about taking guns, then some generic statement about "errmahgurd socialism/communism" and that will be enough. We have too many simpletons in this state that are single issues voters and can't look at the bigger picture of where this state is headed.

And if it wasn’t guns, they’d run his speech defending Colin Kapernick or his statements about universal healthcare or climate change or his statements on immigration and say the same shit.

Again, anyone who is ripe for those bullshit messages are NEVER VOTING FOR BETO ANYWAY.

Again, polls show Texans are closer to Beto’s position than Abbott’s.

Shit, TRP won’t have to even say boo about the guns thing because bed wetting Democrats will do the job for them by concern trolling about it.

This.

Change the subject - keep making Abbott answer for COVID, usurping local leadership to appease the rural crowds when it comes to COVID, and the abortion law.

Shit I wouldn’t even bring up abortion. Say you will let the Supreme Court make its ruling.  Democrats need as much of the Catholic vote as possible.  But add fixing the power grid to the list.

This is wrong. Plenty of Texas who love guns also hate Abbott’s response to covid and his assault on women’s rights.     Including many young professionals in my social circle (many are registered Democrats).

Beto really fucked himself and the state with those comments.

just gotta hope, they realize Beto can’t really do anything about guns, but he can do a lot to protect the rights of women / BIPoCs

I hope Beto runs but I hope he makes some changes from his senatorial race.  I'm all for positivity but he also needs to be more of a sniper.  For example after one the the Cruz debates the moderator asked both of them to say something nice about the other.  Beto said something nice about Cruz and Cruz went low.

I want Beto to say nothing nice about Abbott at all.  I want him to hit him with Covid and abortion and the ice storm and everything else.  If he calls him Governor Hot Wheels he can take all my money.

Public opinion favors masking, vaccines, and is against the draconian abortion bill. If I were Beto, I’d be trying to make the election about Covid and the bounty system bullshit. Throw in failure to protect the electric grid for good measure. There’s a winning message out there for Dems in TX, but companies like Apple need to start speaking out about the women’s rights issues. If people think Abbott’s social policies may negatively impact the economy, it’s got a better shot of resonating with more voters.

it’s still probably too steep a hill to climb. I bet Abbott wins with something like 57% of the vote.

Wouldn’t hurt.  Just a good ol boy with 9 figure in-laws and an Ivy League education, out here enjoying this Texas holiday. I’m sure no one will see thru more of his bullshit.

You basically described a shit ton of Republicans in Texas who decry the ivy school elites and have degrees from Harvard, Yale, etc. and post shitty brisket pictures while posing in front of their pickup trucks that would never grace their driveways in River Oaks.

And I'd bet money that's the Texas Democratic party take on it. It's a loser mentality. Abbott has made Texas free for the taking from the top down.  Get someone who has a chance and let Beto support them and campaign for them. Down ballot is great, but flipping the Governor seat changes the narrative completely for years to come. If they can't formulate a strategy to beat Abbott given all the ammunition they have been given by Abbott himself how are they ever going to get over the hump??

I know.  It's stupid.  The difference is most of them (even if they don't gaf about the 2nd) don't proclaim they are an ally, then in a whimsical emotion fueled twist, change their mind during an election.  I'm sorry the 50 school shootings wasn't enough to dissuade his opinion earlier, but I only he can answer to that.

It's worth a call back and re-reading the article that was the beginning of the end of Beto O'Rourke's political career: "I was born to be in it". Vanity Fair should be credited with the kill, but it will likely go to Abbott. Much like pneumonia gets the COD for a lot of deaths that wre really something else.

IF the best outcome from Beto running is getting Collier or Jaworski into office, then I would be pretty happy with that.

If Wooderson runs, he can probably just rip off some Jordan Peterson speeches, and that will be enough to win.  Taking specific stands on abortion and gun control are poison to getting elected.  Speaking in platitudes that sound like common sense, being famous, and making people feel good are goldmines for getting elected.   Good luck with your school shooting advertisements.

Governor Wooderson and Lt Gov Collier/Jaworski would be a 1,000% improvement over the current situation. Even if MM does nothing for 4 years but cut ribbons at strip mall openings, at least he wouldn't be actively trying to get people killed.

Which was mostly what the Texas Governor was supposed to be - a weak office.  Perry really changed that, mostly due to tenure and ensuring basically everyone appointed to jobs owed allegiance to him, and then Abbott ratcheted it up to 11 acting like a dictator with emergency powers and the Governor was actually Emperor.

Ted Cruz seems like the type of guy who holds a spinning rod with the reel on top and has to get someone else to bait his hook.

When this pic was first circulated, I remember commenting that there is 0.0000% chance he casted that.  I'm assuming he just pushed the button, let it fall to bottom, and some poor guide had to unfuck that bird's nest.

With Trump doing a little campaigning for him, he won with less than 56% in 2018 against no-name Lupe Valdez from Dallas.

A lot has changed since then, and a competent Democrat should be able to narrow that substantially, especially given that Abbott abandoned moderates and independents to chase after MAGA.

Beto and democrats can't be afraid. they need to be aggressive and go after Abbott. Be genuine and honest. Beto's values and morals and views align more closely with more Texans than Abbott's. But he needs to go out there and show that, not hide or run from it. LFG!!!!!!

All of this.  Abbott went extremely hard right, with nary a thought about how moderates and independents would feel about Abbott turning Texas into the Republic of Gilead.

Abbott opened the door by chasing after the Huffines crowd.  There is a question of whether he is doing this for the primary, and is simply trying to bury Huffines to keep him from making a dent with the MAGA crowd (and/or running third party) and will come back to center for the general, or whether this is for 2024.

Whether it's about the primary or 2024 doesn't really matter though, other than how long he sticks to the far right - there's blood in the water, and the Democrats need to stop acting like chum and start acting like sharks.    They need to be willing to put the GOP in Texas on trial, even those Republicans like Cruz who aren't up, they need to make sure people are reminded about all of the bullshit Republicans in Texas are pulling.

I feel like if Beto just backs off the gun thing (maybe pose with a couple uzis dressed like chuck Norris from 90s) the he’ll be good.  Seriously he can say something like “my gun policy will focus on safet and education “ the. Always change the subject to health care and  education.
He needs to take up quail hunting...

The "more tweets" section when I click on that is just bonkers.  Right in the middle is a tweet from Boebert:  WE'RE BEING INVADED!!!

The problem with Huffines is that somebody obviously fed him after midnight.

We just need to make sure and not get him wet, and if Abbott were smart, he'd ask Huffines for a debate in the middle of the day, in an open air forum, when the forecast is for clear skies.  Huffines will try and avoid it for safety reasons and ask that it be indoors.

Is Ted fishing in my leather-weave belt from freshmen year of high school?  nothing says sportsmen like being outfitted by "The Gap:  Angler Edition"

I'm betting the campaign maximum donation amount that it's looped over itself up front in early 90's style.

You native Texan gun-owning badasses must be so proud of your fellow Alpha-male tough guy.  Seriously, you guys ever get sick of being so weak?
