It is bad for him. The GOP *IS* the Trump party. He’s losing 1/3-1/4 of GOP voters in what should be a coronation of a primary and especially bleeding support in the suburbs and college towns. Those are voters who have been shifting left the last 8 years, quickly.

No he's not. Vast majority of those Haley voters will vote for him in the general.

I, too, would morbidly like to be around 100 years from now to see how we are described as a nation.  I talk to my oldest girl about it every now and again to try to impart the modicum of wisdom I have on the subject.  But then my wife cuts me off.  Wife doesn't like Trump but is apologetic for him sometimes because most of her family is devout MAGA and she is close to the few MAGA members I have on my side of the family as well.  But they are both whip-smart and my wife knows what I say and what she won't admit.  It wasn't a grand conspiracy.  It wasn't radiation or lead-paint or the ChiComs or eating styrofoam.  She's apologetic because she knows what Trump gave to people like her relatives, and some of mine, and 35% of our adult population.  He gave them what they craved and wandered for.  Validation.  You matter.  What you believe.  What you think.  What your issues are.  It's all perfectly well and good.  What you've been denied access to all these years, it's not your fault.  And simply give me your money and support, and I will get it back for you, and then some.  He comes as your  friend, at a time when you're most vulnerable.  History, to your point, has proven this out time and time again.  It happened because it works.

I think it's hilarious how you talk about your wife being very devout and religious, but she's fully aware that "he comes as your friend" and she's apologetic for The Devil.

Maybe you should lecture her on her behavior and it's implications for her faith as opposed to whining about all the democrats that didn't vote in the Republican primary, particularly those like myself who had a Kim Ogg to GTFO.

I was informed by a Canadian immigration law firm that I was a prime candidate for Saskatchewan acceptance. (SINP) And you know what rhymes with Regina...

I also have some extended family in Australia so will try and cultivate that as well. Is there a flourishing liberal democracy anywhere?

Don’t forget the fattie and friends phenomenon. Too embarrassed to admit in mixed company that they support him but will gleefully pull the lever for him in November. Also that Haley voters are still republicans and will fall for wedge issues by November. Remember, she couldn’t even admit that the civil war was about slavery, people who vote for her are still way closer to Trump than the true centrist Biden. And the double standard that they live by, “I’m not a fan of trumps style but did you see Biden stutter a bit in that one clip?” These are dumb hateful people we’re dealing with, they’ll be foaming at the mouth by November to vote against the socialist libtard Biden.

"Lecture her on her behavior".  Do you even wife, bro?  I'd like to keep my eyeballs, thank you very much.

But it's funny you mention that paradigm.  Right at the start of Lent, my mom and cousins were over (they're like sisters to  me).  And they were all, along with my wife, chatting about the Devil and casting him out of our lives and all that as is I guess the spirit of Lenten Season.  And one of my cousins is fucking batshit pro-MAGA, even got mixed up in Qanon for awhile before she came back from that insanity for other madness.  And they're going on and on about how it's important to keep him out of your soul and be a person of values.  And it was all I could do sober to not crack up and laugh.

So I told my cousin's husband who I'm close with about the novel "The Master and Margarita."  How the Devil goes through the ages manipulating people, toppling empires, and turning us to sin.  But he never actually convinces us he doesn't exist, he convinces us he is present, friendly, and an ally.  And I'm trying to explain the book, but not doing a good job (shocker).  So I tell my cousin-in-law, it's actually the basis of the Rolling Stones song, "Sympathy for the Devil" and he kinda gets it.  And then I tell him something this older guy I do volunteer work with at church told me once.  "The Devil has the greatest PR team in history.  He's only mentioned in the bible about 30 or 40 times and he still comes out as the main takeaway for most people."  And I didn't realize that until he said, but it's basically true.  But it's a convenient Fall Guy, pun intended.  When we need validation, empowerment, and justification.  We will turn to almost anything.  Or anyone with a hint of a smile.  Hence, Donald Trump.  Hope you guessed his name.

Biden could cancel all their debt, solve the Gaza crisis, the Ukrainians win against Russia, and the narrative will be:

Why did it take so long? We need leaders that can get things done faster.

And others blame Biden for the Afghanistan withdrawal but all he was doing was enacting Trump's 2020 treaty and plan with the Taliban. Important to always remember that we only had 2,500 troops in Afghanistan when Biden became President. The withdrawal was effectively down to Bagram Airfield at that point.

True grace is when you act like it never happened and hold no ill will against that person.

One trillion upvotes this morning for variations on “these guys both suck”. Not one single top post calling out the false equivalency.

I think I’m done with this thread and this election cycle. Quickly losing my will to give a fuck. If a majority of voters think there’s any comparison at all between these two guys, we deserve every last shit sandwich headed our way.

Actually one last parting shot before I’m out. Anyone posting stuff like “Trump is only winning 70% and that is very bad for him” needs to shut the fuck up. That is a terrible take. Nikki Haley is a big name, was a governor and UN ambassador, and had a lot of money behind her. If someone like, say, Pete Buttigeig was running against Biden, he’d be siphoning off 35% too.

i gave up the politics board for 1 year as a new years resolution last year.  great for my belief in man.  thinking about reupping.

Yep.  The world is going all-in on "maybe we should give this whole fascist thing a try again.....we just need some tweaks to how we did it in the 30s-40s, we'll get it right this time!"  So, here we go.   The collective "we" is going to give authoritarian, nativist fascism a try, globally.

It's going to go EXACTLY as anyone with common sense would expect, but we just gotta touch that hot stove to see if it really is hot - I don't think it's actually hot, I think it's warm, and will warm us all up, the Deep State is lying, they just want you to believe it will burn you, why are they trying so hard to keep us from touching the stove?  They are HIDING the truth from you!  Touching the stove will SAVE US!  Do the research, sheeple!

The pendulum is swinging right because of inflation, immigration and cost of living crisis.

Because right wing governments are sooooooooooooooo good at managing the economy and ensuring fairness in who benefits from tax cuts, housing, etc.

But Buttigeig isn't in the field because Biden is sufficiently strong that he cleared the field of any challengers.

George H.W. Bush wasn't weak because Pat Buchanan got 35% in New Hampshire in 1992.  The fact that Pat Buchanan was in the race to begin with reflected Bush's underlying weakness.  And it's a weakness that Trump shares but Biden does not.

This.  A former President who lost a close election was still challenged by multiple people - 2 sitting governors, some former governors, a former Ambassador to the UN / former governor of South Carolina.  Not to mention a current US Senator and the former President's VP.  I said it earlier, it should have been a coronation for Trump - not a primary with multiple sitting elected officials and 2 former members of his administration.

And in his race, he is losing 25-35% of the vote.

Who opted to actually challenge Biden?  Marianne Williamson and a former U.S. Rep.  That's it.

Don't I know it. They pretty much had a whites-only immigration policy until about 73'. A hundred years ago it wasn't clear whether it was illegal to kill an Aborigine.

I don't know where to look for a progressive democracy. Maybe become a Kiwi?

I think there will be a large contingent of folks who traditionally identify as Republican but in 2024 don't like Trump and don't like Biden, and so will just abstain and not vote, which is actually great for Biden.

The way I see it is, Biden will GOTV for everyone in the big tent whether they love him or not in a combination of voting for him plus voting against DJT, while the segment of Republicans who are non-MAGA are apathetic and fatigued by it all, so the only GOTV proactive energy is from MAGATS, which are dwindling especially in the swing states where Biden has done a good job of staying relevant (e.g. Unions, speeches, face-in-the-place, etc.)

Besides, most non-extreme/MAGAT Republicans find Biden to be palatable compared to what could be from the D party and most I know can admit (even if sometimes rather begrudgingly) of some of the good things he's done. I think non-MAGAT republicans are waiting for the Trump era to die, when Trump dies, and another round of Biden is fine as a stop gap.

To quote Mike Yanigita, "Yah, if you are an engineer American, you can do a lot worse."

Until most Americans acknowledge that we’re living in unprecedented times, then the danger that portends our future as a Democracy cannot be overstated. What we witnessed last night was not normal. It was not normal for a presidential primary. That Trump is within 15 points of Biden in even the most flawed polls is scary. Bad info hygiene, years of disinformation, fear and ignorance infecting the electorate can destroy us.

That said, Biden will win and it won’t be all that close. We must remain vigilant.

I would love to see how this era is studied and described in 100 years. They’ll surely figure it out. Either microplastics, or lead water pipes, or cell phone signals, something has broken the brains of half this country and it’s spreading around the world. Societies don’t generally go backwards, they progress towards more freedoms and broader opportunities. The opposite is happening. There has to be a cause. Maybe it really is Idiocracy going way faster than anyone could anticipate. Something has broken the human mind and any of the forgoing explanations might make sense, although it’s more likely something we haven’t even considered yet.

The corporate media are so lacking in self awareness as to be a pitiful shame. I can recall at this point in the run up to the general in 2016, , they were laser focused on Hillary’s emails and the threat they posed to our national security. Matt Lauer went ape shit on Hillary in an interview about them. Now, they work around Trump’s 91 charges without dilemma.

We need to go back to the days when news organizations were cost centers.

Ok.  But let me just say for a minute that I didn't like how Hilary dealt with her emails.  Anyone who has spent any time in public service understand that those documents belong to the government and are public information.  And I don't like how Biden handled some of the material in his custody.  That was just flat negligent.

But elections are binary choices.  And in that binary choice, there is no equivalency.

Yeah, I'm closer to the world not ending if Trump wins again side of things. I'd prefer it didn't happen, but I think the United States would get through it.
