Hot take: debate is an inferior, pre-literate way to synthesize information and decide between alternatives that has been filtered through 19th century entertainment culture. Winning a debate is not the same thing as presenting the best position.

Jordan Peterson is fascinating to me. His whole schtick was telling boys how to pull their shit together and learn to function and then he very publicly crashed out in a spectacular way. I thought that would be the end of him.

Peterson is washed up. Low view counts compared to before he joined Daily Wire. But he got them to pay him while his stock was high. The grift is over.

The best part is he's such a dumbass he can't even defeat a bunch of incredibly annoying reddit atheists. His only tactic is to try his best to never be pinned down on any issue. He wouldn't even admit he was a Christian even though anyone who has even tangentially followed him at all would know that.

I think you all overestimate human critical thinking. 90% of people pre-industrial revolution believed all sorts of stupid shit. Today, we have a much higher base knowledge but 90% of people still believe all sorts of stupid shit. Go backward or forward 1000 years and there will still be a giant idiocracy.

I bet those people, at a minimum, didn't fall en masse for "they're eating the dogs" or "those vaccines that elimiated polio and small pox were actually bad for you."

Edit to point out i'm extrapolating into post industrial revolution re vaccines.

Correct. We have always had a giant moron class. It is the nature of humanity.
However, they also mostly knew that they were morons. What has changed is that we have now weaponized stupidity, and they are now convinced that their idiocy is BETTER than intelligence. The dumber shit is? Well, that’s proof of how much better they really are.
That’s what’s killing us: weaponized stupidity.

and then the one time he pinned himself down to an issue it was, “if you believe something it means you’re willing to die for it”, which of course was a battle he lost in embarrassing fashion.

people forget, but like 5-6 years ago he was nowhere near this bad. some time prior to that he even had a lot of useful shit to share with impressionable young men. his descension into this hypomanic, easily agitated idiot needs to be studied. his regression makes joe rogan’s regression look minor.

He made his bones on telling impressionable, directionless young men pretty obvious things. I have no issue with any of his self help stuff, even though it's honestly really basic stuff, it's not harmful.

He just thinks he's way smarter than he is and has incredibly thin skin. Not a great combo for someone that suddenly gets famous.

this is the perfect thread for this, because you're using Yelling With Confidence to cover up facts you don't like.

That graph tells half the story.

It's not just that they're appealing to stupid people (they are, and the stupid people are responding as expected)

It's also that these counties have driven out the people who have (or tried to get) college degrees. They're driven out because the counties have nothing going on economically: goodbye to that rural clinic and sayonara to that tiny, underfunded, private university. They're also driven out by red state policies that are openly hostile to women, to people of color, to queer people, to the irreligious, and even to people who are religious but not Protestant. You only have one life to live, so why would anyone who values education spend it in a podunk town with nothing going on?

The part of the story I'm not sure the graph fully captures is that people who have attended college probably haven't increased their affinity for the democratic party. I don't think the people have "moved further left" it's just that the existing left-of-center people have been forced to relocate to population centers where all the jobs and amenities are.

I've seen clips from a few of these over the years and this one has to be the most disturbing.  I don't know if its a commentary on the shift in mainstream views of conservatives, or if they simply selected a batch of especially insane folks this time, but these people are all proudly unhinged.  Absolutely no desire from any of them to tone down their extreme beliefs for a wide audience.

What if that is actually toned down?

You joke, but this shit happens. My son was failing 2 classes his senior year, mostly because he's lazy and likes to sleep in till 10am. The HS sent a notice to his mother (my ex) about his failing status and that he might not graduate. She dragged her attorney up to the principals office and threatened to sue the school district and him personally if he wasn't allowed to graduate. TLDR: he graduated without bringing his grades up.

There's a weird element, by some/many on the right, to attempt to win an argument by either physical intimidation (this guy) or gaslighting (example Karoline Leavitt.)

Was waiting for this loser to face consequences.

I made it about an hour into it, listening in the background throughout the day. I closed it when they started talking about Gaza genocide, I knew this idiots would have zero concept of what was happening there, and the first speaker confirmed it. It was so fucking sad how stupid those people are, and couldn't even follow the basic premise of Mehdi Hasan's basic points. And the general veneer they tried to slap over racism...just nauseating. Hasan was amazingly impressive. Just prepared, came with talking points and citations, although he obviously was emotional dealing with these idiots who can't even answer a basic point.

Country is toast.

This. It surrounds morons with an agreeable audience that amps them up. In a world where talking loud, repetitively, and fast means you "won" the argument.

Sure, smart people get to sit back and point and laugh about how fucking stupid and crazy these people are.

But these idiots--and those like them watching--get power in feeling like they just owned some intellectual, annoying lib.

What's the point?

Get them one on one and dismantle their whole belief system without other racists to back them up.

Jubilee is a uniquely, monstrously cynical and hollow media org. It's literally just trying to capture the appeal of Roman gladiatorial combat in media form except it's boring/depressing as fuck.

Oh I don't watch this crap at all. I see the screenshots or a small clip of "look what this moron is saying" and I wonder why people will actively sit to watch this shit. I don't need confirmation that we have awful people out there but I enjoy when these people get lampooned online.

1 v 20 could be a watchable content if they actually brought on reasonable people to reasonably disagree. However in today's world its all about outrage or gotchas. The more extreme they get, the more views. This thread is an example. No one would be discussing a civilized disagreement.

I could see this format devolve to a scenario where the person who wins the argument gets to slap the loser. it would be 10x the views. I'm unsure how the judging would work for both sides to agree to the slap.

They also frequently bring in paid professionals (such as professional right wing content creators or even CEOs) in whatever relevant field and present them as every day people with real concerns rather than what they actually are (people that make a living shilling whatever point of view is relevant to the video's premise). It's incredibly cynical and dishonest. Jubilee is trash.

I didn't know they brought in ringers. but it makes sense that they would bring in someone that has a point or experience in which the single person has zero background to defend or argue against. And in reverse, you bring in some complete morons or racists with the 20.

Yeah it's a little different in the 1v20 format because the 1 is always going to be someone with actual knowledge, I was more referring to their other formats where they would always have ringers on the "wrong" side of the argument, and the people on the "right" side were pretty much always like a school teacher or some other rando.
