"As I asked in my Ifs List, however, what if Manning is merely very good? What if he flashes epic upside -- like he did against UTSA, completing passes of 75, 51 and 36 yards and ripping off a 67-yard touchdown run in less than 30 snaps -- but also gets fooled at times, like he did against Louisiana-Monroe (and in cameos against Georgia and Florida)? What if he needs an unproven receiving corps to bail him out and an unproven offensive line to protect him more?"

Fair write up. Arch will struggle but if he can scramble for first / touch downs look out.

Maybe the season comes down largely to this: Do we get a full, healthy season out of Arch? If not, how long is he out, and against whom? Baxter's health is the next question, but at RB we've shown we can get it done by committee if need be. Doesn't work that way at QB.

I have a similar suspicion with kicking. We brought in Shipley hoping he'd resurrect our kicking game, but so far all we've heard is that he's in a "battle" with our fucking kickoff specialist Will Stone for the job.

I suspect FG kicking will be substandard and unreliable again this season.

Oh, ffs.

And those hang times from the punter have me drooling. Is that for real???

I am a sicko for this stuff too, but drooling over a day 1 insider report of punter hang times (that he personally recorded on his iPhone) may be a bridge too far.

Gerry is at practice and says that Baxter did not go through the team snaps and doesn’t look close to ready.

RB room is now looking like a real weak spot.

Wisner is a known quantity - great vision and patience, but slow and undersized. He only made hay when our O-line dominated the opposing D-line, and we've lost a lot of experience there. Gibson needs to stop fumbling and develop some vision. And everyone else is unproven and inexperienced.

Blue couldn't stop fumbling but he was also the only RB who could do anything when our O-line was getting dominated (see Georgia and Ohio State). He scored 14 of the RB room's combined 24 TDs and led all our backs in YPC. And now we have no one who can replace him. We needed a back with top-end speed who can be a threat running routes out of the backfield.

Dude, context. Punting last year was terrible. I'm excited about the possibility of punting not being a liability. That's all.

“Not terrible” is a large step up from last year’s punting. Even average would have been fine

I know, just giving you shit

Although I’m not certain just how much we can glean from those stopwatch times without any other context

Bobby has a said a few times he's good enough that he will get a shot at the NFL.  It's safe to assume that he will do a hell of a lot better punting. than last year.

I had already forgotten that Lavon Johnson was even on our team.

Any Gaskamp candidates this year? That seems like a thing of the past. If Hutson has a really good year does that count?

Our line fucking sucked at run blocking last year and we could only run OZ concepts because of that. This years line will be able to move people in the run game because we don't have two guys who can't move anyone.

Why?  I can’t imagine that we are going to punt more than 1 time each game.   You need to follow all the reports.

Are you a Futureman sock? First off, I love how you just assume Gibson hasn’t improved his skill set and ball control in his second year. The odds are it’s the opposite, but you’ll mark it as a guaranteed negative because you’re trying to be South Asian 6th Street.

Jaydon Blue was the only RB who could do anything when our line sucked? Did you watch these games, Hindu Helobius? The back you’re describing is Wisner. Jaydon Blue never met a shoestring he didn’t let tackle him.

Burton cites how it seems all the backs can catch out of the backfield, that our 2 injured backs are looking great on they way back, and the one of the rookies looks the part, and your take is “we’re fucked.”

I’m starting to think you’re a white frat daddy who went to aTm and has been playing the Indian card for years as cover. Are you Liucci?

He's right. We'll be lucky just to get in field goal range.

Who’s the Golden this year? I dont think there is one. That’s the ceiling on the offense.

I think Arch’s legs will solve most of our redzone issues.

The defense doesn’t have a ceiling in my opinion.

Running in the RedZone with Arch should be a last resort

Ohio State mostly saved Howard’s legs last year for high leverage moments. Would make sense for us to do the same

Real weak spot relative to what? It’s not Bijan and Roschon or the 2001 hurricanes, but it’s probably good enough if everything else clicks

I'm not terribly concerend about any unit on the team, but if I had to rank the areas that I'm the most hesitant about going into the season, I think I would rank them:

1. Offensive Line - they are certainly talented, but it's hard for me to believe that we'll just replace 4 starters (call it 3.5 if you want to give Goosby credit for starting some of the most important games last year and playing well in those starts) without some sort of issues.

2. Secondary - again, I like the talent we have back there but it's hard for me to believe that we can lose Jahdae and Mukuba and just keep churning along without any issues.  This is offset by the fact that I expect the front 7 to be spectacular and not allow opposing QB's much time to operate.

3. Running Backs - not super concerned, but i think the ceiling for the room overall depends upon the health of CJ Baxter.

4. Defensive Tackles - really not concerend at all.  Every year we worry about the DT's we have to replace and every year it feels like the the DT's perform just as well as the guys they are replacing.  And again any worries about DT's is immediately offset by how deep and explosive the other positions in the front 7 will be.

This is going to be a very stacked team that doesn't have many warts.  We are officially at the point where we are a true football factory and should just keep churing out great players to replace departing great players each year.

We’re replacing a lot of snaps on the OL, but it’s worth pointing out that a lot of those snaps were also flawed; Conner fucked up most run plays he was involved in, Majors had issues getting displacement inside and anchoring against high end DTs and was good for a procedure penalty a game, and Cam was raw early in the season and a walking dead body late in the season

They were also an odd mix of guys who were good in some run schemes while sucking in others that didn’t quite mesh, which made it tough to have an identity in the run game

Banks obviously wasn’t an issue (he’s the best OL we’ve had since?), but Goosby potentially adequately replaces him

It’s not out of the question that we can just run duo against lite boxes for five-six yards a pop against most defenses while they sit back in coverage with four man sim pressures hoping we just fuck up our pick-ups. When sark has a consistent run game he’ll dig deep into his bag and rip you a new bunghole

While missing blocks can kill a run game for sure, it helps that our over the top game will be scary, and Arch can run it. I agree with the overall level of concern, it is our least experienced unit. So there is volatility. However, 50/50 we could end up being better by the end of the year.  I mean, the O-line got unceremoniously roasted both times against Georgia. All we need is average against out strongest opponents.

looking forward to ctj/carton response to this

Between arch's run threat, the more physical interior oline and Chad Scott+Neal Brown (and what they did at wvu), it seems extremely likely our run game will be much improved.

My response is that I generally agree. Conner was a constant joke his entire time on campus when it comes to the run game and I wrote that for 3+ seasons. Glad he got drafted, but the Cardinals are proven idiots. Majors wasn’t the starter at C for 4 years because he could run block.

If Neto gets the LG role, he’s allegedly a force in the run game. Can he protect worth a shit? Clearly, Flood and Sarkisian value pass pro over run blocking, so hopefully he has his shit together. Hutson is objectively a better blocker overall than Majors was. Can he handle the calls and help with the pickups? That’s obviously critical to both run success and not getting Manning killed. Campbell is in a contract year and Goosby looked great when he played. Whether it’s Baker or Cojoe or Brooks that wins the RT role, it’s a Darwinian battle between very talented guys. Williams was a shadow of himself in the end, so give me any of the three choices as an even exchange, at worst, and with elevated depth.

I think people underestimate the threat of a mobile QB. He doesn’t have to be running all over the field. He just needs to be accounted for and that changes a defenses approach. That, a healthy RB room, and the ability to actually complete deep passes on the regular take a good deal of pressure off of the OL early.

Sharma was the biggest and quickest in that clip.  He’s too big and fast to keep on the bench.  He’ll be getting quality snaps by the end of the year pushing for the starting job.

You have to give this to Satya.  On the occasion when one of his negative takes hits during the season, he doesn’t come back to the board with a “I tried to tell you guys” post.

Probably because he’s already 15 deep in more negative takes to remember them all.

Offensive coordinators in the SEC may want to consider putting their teams on birth control. Teams we play this year are most definitely going home pregnant.
They are going to find out real quick, this D fucks!
