This is my reason for them being the most difficult game on the schedule.  Secondarily, it’s on the road and we might be apt to be less focused than for other games.

Why less focused? It’s the Swamp. And Texas will be coming off three lackluster non conference matchups and eagerly anticipating the SEC opener. I’m not worried about the team’s focus.

Trevor Goosby's injury is not exactly minor but it won't keep him out of the Ohio State game.

Dislocated finger? I won't pretend to be a doctor, but it seems like the type of injury that isn't nothing but also isn't going to keep a guy in the trenches off the field. I guess the additional worry would be ligament damage?

Not in general but in the context of it’s a long season and you don’t always bring the same juice.  I do believe OSU and UGA will get a higher intensity from us.

I understand that's the CW, but it seems like Sark does a good job of getting the team up for road games. Most of our big losses are at home.

Actually, "most" is the wrong way to put it. Since 2023, our only losses are either at home (UGA last season) or neutral sites. We haven't lost a true road game since OSU in 2022.

Sure.  We’ve also never had as many high profile road games in the same season.

But the more important part is that UF has a chance to win some battles upfront and have some success offensively.  Baugh is a bit of a load so long season, a little home crowd energy, and some offensive skill can make it a difficult matchup.

But note, I never said we’d lose.

It’s worth a reminder that Jahdae Barron’s defense of Jeremiah Smith in the semifinal is one of the most impressive performances I’ve seen from a Texas defensive back in my lifetime as a Longhorns fan.

I know that we limited him to his least productive game all year.  I thought Barron was a part of that, but I also thought that we weren't in man that much against Ohio State (or at least that was the plan).  Were we mostly in man and Barron just owned him or did we box him with safety and let Tate go crazy?

This is true. Also, their OL depth is no bueno...and the 2 games they play before Texas are at LSU and at Miami.

Yeah. He’s done some badass stuff in his life, but Man v. Wild had some exaggerated theatrics, and he caught shit for staying in hotels at some locations.

I saw one scene where he filmed himself getting out of a "crevass" that was later revealed to be about 200 feet from the highway.

I recalled that Barron played man on him for much of the game. However, I was also nonsober for much of the second half.

Sark at Texas?  No.  Any other time?  Maybe, but I don’t have an example.

We were 0-3 versus UGA and OSU last year.  One for a championship.  Another for a shot at a championship.  One we open the season with a #1 vs #2 matchup.  Both national champs in the past 5 years.  That is unique that brings a certain amount of focus on those games.

As brother Austin points out, SEC opener after some easy ones will help us be ready.

You are right about that.  That’s far better than if it were that MSU or Kentucky week.  The bye before Georgia is a nice break too.  UF is still relatively early too. So  Fine, you win.

Our depth will help us navigate the long season, but there’s likely a game or two where we are lackluster.  That shouldn’t be a problem against a Kentucky.

UF is one of the few teams offensively with the potential to hit us in the mouth.  Even with focus, that could present some problems.

We double and even triple teamed him at points in the game. Barron would have gotten cooked eventually if they left him alone all game.

That's not even a hot take, just straight up bait for engagement. The Athletic has really nosedived since the NYT bought them.

I don't really care to defend Bear Grylls, but what I remember from that whole situation was that he never claimed that he slept in the wild or actually put himself in danger. His show was about showing people how to survive in certain situations (while being entertaining TV) rather than actually surviving them. I mean, dude had a film crew with him the whole time, it's not like he was hiding the fact that stuff was staged. The other big show doing the same thing at the time, Survivor Man, was about a guy actually putting himself in danger by himself and filming it. Which, for me, was way more interesting, but it was also a lot harder on the host. I think the guy eventually had to quit the show because of the toll it took on his body.

Survivor man was the shit. That dude showed the audience how hard it was to get good shots because of having to haul camera around when he was exhausted. Like climbing a cliff edge and having to go back and do it again to pack up camera gear and do it again off camera while crazy tired.

Man, I gotta say, it's really nice to be in a position where there's a great anticipation for Longhorn's football before a season.  I know there were the last year or two as well, but being in the playoffs two years in a row means it's not a fluke.  What Sark is building is real, and going to endure for the foreseeable future.  There will be a time when we get stuck in the doldrums of success, things start to degrade and we eventually have to go through another Charlie Strong/Tom Herman rebuilding era before we find the right guy to steward the program, but man, I don't see anything but good times on the 5 year horizon.

There is nothing in recent history to suggest this is a worry.

There is nothing in recent history to say there’s a good comparison.

If you are attempting to say Michigan last year or Alabama the year prior are comparable, they really aren’t.  They likely got substantial focus from Sark and crew during the off season.  The OSU game is a better comp there.  The UF game is not a prove a point game.  Those were.  Not to mention after those two games, we could screw around and still win - Rice, Wyoming, UTSA.  This year we get OU after UF.

Now, why might UF get less focus?  Because they aren’t OSU or Georgia or OU or A&M.  Because we beat the shit out of them last year.  Even on this board, there is not tremendous anticipation about the game.

Now South Austin was absolutely correct, and that’s the best argument.  We play 3 lackluster games leading into UF with a bye.  It’s the conference opener.  We will likely be amped for that game.  And as another poster said UF has a couple of more difficult games leading up to it so they likely aren’t focusing on us solely.

Anyway, I’m on board just for different reasons.

I follow your general thinking, but I don't think 7 for 87 is "going crazy".

I'm sure Day and Hartline have spent a ton of time working on offsetting some of Texas' coverage schemes they expect on 8/30, but I'm going to be pretty surprised if Texas trots out the same general approach on defense. Try to shut down Smith and make someone else beat you, sure, but I also think they want to force Sayin to win the game. Shut down the running game with new offensive personnel almost everywhere and bracket Smith all day. If Inniss, Klare and Tate team up with Sayin for a big day, I guess we tip our hats.

I'm going to be stunned if Ohio State gets more than 250 yards of total offense, personally. I expect Sayin to finish the game with level of shellshock. OSU fans and mods aren't expecting any of that, but the majority seem to think that the Texas defense is going to be markedly worse than the one 9 months ago.

With Akina coaching the secondary, I would think we would see some pretty big differences. He likes to play more man-to-man in general, and Texas has a lot of talent at CB this year. They should defend the pass really well, but I guess because of scheme updates they could bust a few assignments too.

I certainly see risk with the UF game for reasons that you mention and for reasons like the potency of their offense, which I mentioned earlier.

That said, I don't blame folks for not really getting amped about it yet due to the distance from here and now. There are a number of problems for UF ahead of the Texas game that work in UT's favor.

1) Their defense isn't anything special and Ron Roberts is an absolute buffoon.

2) Outside of RB, the depth across the entirety of their team is paper thin. Napier runs the same kind of physical practices that Venables runs, and he does so throughout the season. Injury issues at UF under Napier are a feature, not a bug.

3) Lagway may well be made of glass. He just started working in 11's yesterday. LIU is a scrimmage, but USF, @ LSU and @ Miami ahead of the Texas game will be physical contests and it's no secret that UF goes as Lagway goes. He's going to be a target and all three of those teams are going to have their hair on fire playing Florida, each for different reasons. Yeah, there's a bye for UF before Texas, but if Lagway gets the shit beat out of him, he might just simply be out. The OL better be as good as I think it is going to be if he's to stay upright.

4) As y'all discuss, Texas has nothing after OSU until UF, including a bye week itself. I know they work on OU scheming all year, and there will certainly be OU work put in during that month between OSU and OU, but Texas can also do plenty of work prepping for UF before UF week.

5) Sun Belt Billy is a fucking imbecile. I listened to him in an interview last week and it almost sounded like a Key & Peele skit. I think "and um", "and uhhh" and "you know" comprised more than 50% of what he said. He's buffoonish with decisions during games as well. I know that's not always a strong suit of Sarkisian's either, but we're talking orders of magnitude here.

A few of the Surly posters are aware I have a second hand connection to Robertson, so occasionally I get some interesting tidbits.

In my opinion this OL is not national championship quality, even before the injuries. That does not mean they can’t win the national championship, just that it isn’t as strong as other teams and other years’ past. The line does have some decent height, which is good.

The line can be good enough to win the title, but we aren’t going to see 2005, where Vince had enough time to make some sandwiches.  Arch being more mobile will be the way they scheme for the OL limitations and I think it will be glorious after watching self-sacking Quinn.

On the topic of Cruz, him not passing Robertson yet is more Robertson than Cruz. Robertson is hanging in there, is smart, is working, and believes he can be starter quality. In my opinion, there are some physical limitations, but all those other things help a lot, especially at center, where you can deal better with physical limitations.

Rats....all you can find ok about our OL is they are tall enough?.... Doom!

I don’t blame people either, which plays more to my point than any fear of us going on the road. It is not as anticipated as some other games.  It just happens to be on the road, which will give UF some benefit particularly if they survive September.  I’m thinking we come out well versus OSU and absolutely ready.  Fans and players alike are thinking about that game.  I was considering UF potentially more similar to Arkansas or Vandy last year.  Those were not our best efforts from an intensity standpoint.  But where it falls on the schedule is ideal.  Also depending on how September goes, it could be UF that comes out flat.

If their Oline and Baugh are firing, you don’t want to wake up midway thru the 1st and realize you have a game.  I’ve been following your discussion on Lagway.  His health certainly is impactful.

No matter I’m on board for 12-0 and national championship.
