Inside Texas projects Texas' defensive depth chart for Ohio State, with notes on each position

Spoiler

In his time at Texas, head coach Steve Sarkisian hasn’t been all that enthusiastic to share his opening day depth chart. After the first game, opponents have plenty of tape to document their own UT depth chart so Sark saves them a little time and releases his own.

As always, IT has you covered. While this isn’t the official Texas depth chart, it’s pretty dang close.

We’re using a similar template to what the school used last year.

Jack: Ethan Burke, Connor Vasek, Lance Jackson

Buck: Colin Simmons, Zina Umeozulu, Brad Spence, Smith Orogbo

Notes: Talent, depth, etc. Vasek can play Buck and ZU can play Jack. Spence has been coming on. It’s important to note Burke is at DT when the defense is in its main pass rush package.

DT: Hero Kanu, Alex January, Justus Terry, Myron Charles

DT: Cole Brevard, Maraad Watson, Melvin Hills

NT: Travis Shaw, Lavon Johnson, Josiah Sharma

Notes: Again, we’re using the team’s template from last year, hence the DT, DT, and NT designation. But here’s the news, recently Brevard has been with the ones with Kanu. That’s new. Reports on Kanu have been positive for a while. Only the first five will play this weekend and that’s Kanu, Brevard, Shaw, January, and Watson.

Mike: Anthony Hill, Trey Moore OR Elijah Barnes

Will: Liona Lefau, Ty’Anthony Smith

Sam: Trey Moore, Ty’Anthony Smith

Notes: The reason for the “OR” between Moore and Barnes is who comes in for Hill depends on the situation. Lefau has been playing very well in recent practices. Smith has really good length for Sam, but he also offers coverage at the position if they’re not simply looking for another OLB to rush or play the run.

FS: Derek Williams, Xavier Filsaime

BS: Michael Taaffe, Jelani McDonald, Jordon Johnson-Rubell, Zelus Hicks

Notes: While he can play either safety spot, it sounds like McDonald is a matchup hunter. We could get to a point where he doesn’t come off the field but for now we have Taaffe and Williams at safety. Jonah Williams isn’t available for this game.

CB: Malik Muhammad, Warren Roberson, Santana Wilson, Caleb Chester

CB: Jaylon Guilbeau, Kobe Black, Kade Phillips

STAR: Graceson Littleton, Jelani McDonald, Wardell Mack

Notes: The corners don’t necessarily have field-boundary designations. Muhammad and Guilbeau play both, as an example, but Black is often in the boundary. It kind of just depends on who is out on the field together.

P: Jack Bouwmeester

K: Mason Shipley, Will Stone

KR: DeAndre Moore, Ryan Niblett, Daylan McCutcheon

PR: DeAndre Moore, Ryan Niblett, Daylan McCutcheon

Notes: We had a source say Bouwmeester is one of the 15 best players on the team. That’s not meant to terrify you. As we’ve been saying, he’s a stud. The only other listed punter on the roster is Gehrig Hall. Maybe he’s the backup, not sure—it could be a kicker.

Inside Texas projects Texas' offensive depth chart for Ohio State, with notes on each position

Spoiler

We’re using a similar template to what the school used last year.

QB: Arch Manning, Matthew Caldwell OR Trey Owens, KJ Lacey

Notes: Against Ohio State, it’s Caldwell but Sark will probably use “OR” until he’s forced to make a decision in the second game.

RB: Tre Wisner OR CJ Baxter, Christian Clark, Ryan Niblett, Jerrick Gibson, James Simon, Rickey Stewart.

Notes: The coaches love both Wisner and Baxter. IT expects Wisner to roll out with the ones but he’s going to share time with Baxter. Niblett is listed due to his time in 21 personnel. Because it’s a situational package scenario, he could be ahead of Clark as far as who sees the field first.

WR (Z): Parker Livingstone, Aaron Butler, Jaime Ffrench

WR (H): DeAndre Moore, Daylan McCutcheon, Michael Terry

WR (X): Ryan Wingo, Kaliq Lockett

Notes: Chalk. I don’t know what’s up with Emmett Mosley.

TE: Jack Endries, Spencer Shannon, Jordan Washington, Will Randle, Nick Townsend.

Notes: Emaree Winston recently returned to practice wearing a brace. Great news, but don’t expect to see him on Saturday. Washington can play in 11 or 12 personnel but Endries is ahead of him in 11 and Shannon in 12.

LT: Trevor Goosby, Jaydon Chatman, Jordan Coleman

LG: Neto Umeozulu, Nate Kibble, Devin Coleman

C: Cole Hutson, Connor Robertson, Daniel Cruz

RG: DJ Campbell, Connor Stroh

RT: Brandon Baker, Nick Brooks, Jackson Christian

Notes: I wanted to put an “OR” between Goosby and Chatman to screw with you but it’s game week and nobody has time for jokes like that. Two of the third-teamers are an educated guess based on the need for tackles.

Just watched 4 TV analyst from Ohio say that this will be the best OL they have seen at Ohio State. One said that what will surprise everyone after the game is how dominant their OL was vs the Texas D. The other said that he had not seen one this good in the 14 years he has covered the team. Based on the numbers someone gave here earlier it makes me wonder what kool-aid is being served by the coaches.

Maybe a crappy d-line the O is going against in practice

The other guy they mention moving up (Curry) would be displacing the DE transfer from UNC that’s been getting a ton of hype

I can’t say I’ve paid attention to OSU narratives all off-season but it does seem like some big shifts a week before the game

SIAP

Another nugget from yet another preview. Ryan Day is 7 - 6 versus top 5 competition at home. This is not verified, someone said it to underline they weren't making home field the X factor.

They have a three deep and we only have a two deep. Doomed.

Simmons should have at least 2 sacks this game. He will be flying, maybe too fast but you know he’s going to be coming.

I think they double the shit out of him. Of he can beat that then they're cooked.

Otherwise Moore, Spence, and Burke better be ready to eat

Good god, at least get the line right.

Cut and paste job.

I don't have that magical, create internet meme abilities you reprobates have. It was a blatant misappropriation of another's expression of art. IP theft to the highest degree.

Yea this OL propaganda coming out of nowhere and already being this widespread leads me to believe it’s nonsense.

The Buckeye media and internet fan base are the exact same as the Sooners. They all wanted to fire Ryan Day in December.

I'm pretty concerned about OL for this game.  Particularly tackle with injuries and depth.

There is a hot take that no one else has mentioned on this thread before.

I’m hoping Spence shows out and if they want to double Simmons, they will need to, which should hopefully limit Klare and make the need for a chip or double be too much to keep putting him out there. Their LT that the chiefs drafted (Simmons) has grabbed that starting position and will start week 1, he was a good one so losing that won’t be easy. If Burke or Spence, any edge not Simmons have solid games, our D should hold them to under 23. I think our secondary can hold up, just can’t let Simons get going at all. Hero, Shaw, brevard..show your worth.

It feels like they want to put the glaring spot line on our OL issues by talking up theirs as being so amazing

So both their big portal additions are running 2nd team. Lulz. Money well spent.

They would of course say that the recruited talent was just too strong for the transfers to beat out.  In reality, the Buckeye program was begging the donors who were tapped out from the 2024 investment to provide the funds needed to fill glaring holes on the roster that could torpedo the 2025 season.  Those guys clearly weren’t the solution and I think the reality is that the Buckeye OL will be solid but certainly not some all time unit and the DL will be their weakest in years.

Oh, I realized it's not a 'hot take'. But the majority of posters have us winning this game handily and I think they are smoking crack.   These are the same posters that will be wanting to fire someone if we end up losing.

A lot of this feels like the first Georgia game from last year. Arch is mobile but the reality is he's likely going to be running for his life all day thanks to pass protection breakdowns. We can only hope the running game gets untracked, but if things get out of hand fast we're going to be throwing all day trying to catch up. That's when the sacks, turnovers and three-and-outs will start to happen very quickly and at that point our defense is going to be spending a lot of time on the field and begin to tire.

I think our D-line does well against Ohio State's O-line, but our O-line is a big step down from last year's unit and is probably going to be completely overwhelmed in the Horseshoe. Part of that is just terrible luck with Cojoe and Goosby's injuries + Brooks' idiotic DUI. Part of it is poor choices in O-line recruiting from years ago finally coming home to roost. It would have been so much better for both Texas and Cam Williams if the latter had stayed one more year. Instead he fell to the sixth round of the draft and we lost out on what would probably have been his best year.

SP+ definitely is favoring OSU. Margin is pretty surprising, but early season results tend to be poor. FPI has if much close (Texas with a 53.3% chance to win).

Irish 30, Canes 29, with the Canes missing the potential game-winning FG?

I'd like to see the tv analysts that can make that call before seeing any game action

If by missing you mean accidentally letting the clock run out before they can attempt it you're probably right.

I agree, no one here can answer if the OL will look calm and collected like last year's OL. At the Michigan game last year, even after a penalty, I knew we'd be fine because the OL just didn't look rattled at all, even when the Michigan crowd was loud at the start of the game. The other thing that no one here knows is if the transfer DTs will play with the same intensity and effectiveness we've seen from guys who've been in the program a couple years and been told they're not consistent enough to get more playing time, so they improved to get their chance. These transfers are getting a chance without that message drilled into them for a couple years.

Long week ahead, folks. None of this will be known until the teams clash on the field. Anyone with real insight is either a coach or a player who's been around for two years, and they're not sharing with the public or the $9.95ers.

First off fuck Ohio State

Ya’ll remember that one time Sark and the Horns rolled into Brian Dennehy Stadium and completely dismantled the Bama program Tuscaloosa hasn’t been the same since that day.
