Ah yes, all those comedians with hours and hours of sets about the benefits of masks and importance of vaccinating the majority.

Their reality is what they want it to be, so no use discussing irrational narratives.  His view only gathers the credit we give it--tree falling in the woods.  But Adam's basically saying he doesn't give a shit about government sanctioned cancel culture, which makes him a nazi.

while i agree that nextstar and abc are being gutless and not calling the bluff (sinclair is honestly just a piece of shit company) and i am not absolving them from their kowtowing, the fcc chairman made multiple public threats yesterday regarding the revocation of their broadcasting licenses. it's not a "may be the case" situation. it was a clear and direct existential threat to the broadcasting network.

i certainly believe these pussies should have said "do it and we will see you at the supreme court" but their being pussies likewise does not mean you get to obfuscate and distract from the point that it was the government that set the censorship events into motion via abuse of their power. private organizations acting in the best interest of their bottom line is certainly contributing to the ethical decline of our society...but it pales in comparison with a shithead brownshirted sycophant abusing their governmental role in a moment of naked corruption.

So we got media, law, military, universities, arts, medical and scientific communities shackled, and anybody else?  We still thinking we're going to have a free and fair election coming up in midterms and for the presidency in 2028?

I thought about it for about 10 seconds and gave up. I'm sure there is some common theme between what has happened with Kimmel and the pandemic from five years ago.

I tried racking my brain for a comedian who was "cancelled" for being anti-vax or anti-mask. Then I kicked myself for wasting thought on something that Adam Corolla said.

They're only getting money off of ads if they can meter them. In a digital age where your cable company knows exactly what the fuck you're watching at any one time, the metrics show one person watching, not the other thousand people watching the stream. And if it's from OTA then they don't even have that metric.
Your phone knows if you happen to mention toasters to your wife, and shows you toaster ads for the next 2 weeks. Any ad you see or hear is being tracked.

UT in general has already started well down the path of appeasing the authoritarian right. Plus, of course, it's a state institution so it's unavoidable in many respects.

The real problem is that the FTC has become the real enforcer for Trump over the business world. So many large corporations need FTC approval for one of their continual M&A activity. Everyone saw that Trump was able to make CBS bend to their will to approve their sale.

I'm not naive that pressure has never been applied in past administrations but to the extent that the President greenmails organizations is beyond past behavior. And this is just what we know. These organizations could very well be hiring firms quietly tied to the Trump Org in order to get federal approvals.

Here’s something every media conglomerate can (should) do but won’t:

Boycott the admin entirely. No press conferences. No press pools. No backgrounders. No running quotes or seeking quotes. Nothing at all, let them try to use only social and Fox.

Report on what they do: “Today POTUS signed an executive order order that does X.” “Today POTUS met with world leader Y to discuss X.”

Run quotes from independent analysts and others, but absolutely zero platforming of the admin at all levels.

“We have an obligation to report the news openly and truthfully. Accordingly, we will not carry quotes or give space to officials that habitually tell untruths and seek to silence critical coverage. We will continue to report and analyze the actions of this administration but we will not allow ourselves to be a venue for public manipulation.”

until we get real numbers on the number of cancels the last 48 hours the following is just speculation......

- cruz is a muppet - he was told to say what he said

- what cruz said - this ends badly for conservatives - means it's bad for very rich people

- found on reddit: Baseline: Disney+ has ~150–155M subscribers worldwide. • Normal variance: They expect seasonal swings of ~1M up or down each quarter from pricing changes, bundles, or market shifts. • Boycott signal: Losses exceeding that normal “noise” (2–3M+ net drop in a quarter) would break the pattern and trigger executive concern, investor questions, and media coverage.

- let's use 10% as a number for various things - the % of the country that's sentient, awake, aware and pissed off - the % of disney+ subs that are mad as hell and not going to take it any more

- a daily or hourly run rate that signals a 10% drop in subs over the next week or before the end of the month is a 10% drop for their current fiscal year which ends in 11 days

- at $120/year a loss of 15 million subs is a $1.8 billion hit, but last year's revenue was $91.3 billion, so about a 2% haircut, no big deal, right?

- welp, all of the merger calculations are based on 1/2/3/5/10-year net present value calculations with expected (priced-in) overall growth rates in subs, either # of subs or increased sub fees

- this blows up the m&a documents currently in play - it also creates a compensation war at the top - who gets their $10m bonus from the merger - and who does not

- the US is a consumer-driven economy - the vast majority of consumers are too stupid to vote at the ballot box - but they are on autopilot with their wallets

- 70% of us GDP is from sales to consumers.......   so an ellison gives zero fucks.... but anyone selling to consumers, you could potentially have a 10%? 15%? drop in revenue overnight if the next maga catastrophe is in YOUR industry

- no one knows what this vile, reprehensible, vulgar, disgusting shambling mound is going to fuck up next

- for the executives sitting on top of that 70% of us gdp, leading thousands of companies.......  the last 48 hours has given ......  pause ...........

- those executives are the conservatives this doesn't end well for......  shareholders give zero fucks where you lost 10% of your revenue......  siberia for you bitch!

.......

add all this up, and i don't think the cancellation site is crashing.......

it goes in a loop from page to page to nowhere, like a rube goldberg device

they turned it off because they are in a panic

Kimmel Staffer “Can’t Imagine a Scenario” in Which ABC Late-Night Show Returns

"If you’re in Hollywood and don’t want to say anything in support publicly … well, f*** you,” says the ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ staffer.

It sounds like the vibes among the suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! staff are not especially optimistic.

Rick Ellis, a veteran journalist who publishes the “Too Much TV” Substack, spoke with an unidentified staffer at the ABC late-night series, which is currently on an indefinite hiatus.

“I’m in the middle of one of those moments that really defines the type of person you are,” the staffer said, explaining his or her motivations for speaking up.

Though the experience on the show over the past few years “has been great,” the person said that “everything around it has sucked.”

“It was becoming increasingly clear in recent weeks that Sir Iger and the ABC executives would cut us loose in a second if they thought something we did might hurt attendance at Disney World or cost anyone their annual bonus,” said the staffer who participated in the interview on the condition of anonymity.

They further said they were not “shocked” by ABC’s decision to suspend the show, but “surprised” by the timing. “But you could see it coming,” the person said. “Every time some MAGA asshat would spout off about the show, the knot in my stomach just got tighter.”

Kimmel and ABC have been holding talks about the show’s future, though it remains uncertain whether the late-night host, who has mused about retirement before, would want to return. Though giving his staff a runway to future employment may be a reason that he opts to do so.

“There are a lot of people working on the show who can’t afford to be out of work. They have jobs that won’t pay them if they don’t work. And they likely don’t have much money saved up,” the staffer told Ellis. “If you’re in Hollywood and don’t want to say anything in support publicly … well, fuck you. But one thing you can do is find a job for one of the staffers who need it right now. Even if it means digging into your own pocket. Spending a little of your own money is the least you can do. Honestly, it is the least you can do.”

All that said, when asked, the staffer said he “can’t imagine a scenario” in which the show returns. “Even if Jimmy was willing to publicly apologize and donate money to whatever ghoulish conservative group that is demanding it … MAGA people will never be happy. It will never be enough. And Disney will look at the situation and decide it’s cheaper to buy out the rest of his contract and replace the show with reruns of Modern Family and Judge Judy.”

ABC made the call to pull Kimmel’s show after receiving blowback from network affiliates, sponsors and viewers.

Disney TV chief Dana Walden delivered the news to Kimmel but did not ask him to apologize, a source says, who described Wednesday as “a very heavy, very hard day” inside the walls of Disney and ABC.

Disney bosses keen to get 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' back on air — but are scrambling to convince host to 'de-escalate'

Ariel Zilber
6–7 minutes

Disney bosses are scrambling to convince Jimmy Kimmel to tone down his rhetoric before putting his show back on the air as the company scrambles to manage fallout from his fiery monologue about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

The House of Mouse is said to be keen on resuming the airing of Kimmel’s one-hour talk show, and top bosses were scheduled to meet late Thursday with the longtime host of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in a bid to de-escalate the situation, which has led to death threats and doxxing of staffers, according to reports.

The earliest the show could return is this Monday, though it is unclear if Disney can come to a resolution with Kimmel before then, it was reported by Bloomberg News.

Kimmel was seen leaving his Los Angeles home on Thursday and driving to his attorney’s office.

The suspended host was spotted in his sleek black Audi S8 wearing sunglasses and smirking as he arrived at a Century City complex that houses several law firms.

ABC yanked “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” off the air Wednesday after Kimmel used his Monday show to blast Republicans for “trying to score political points” off Kirk’s death.

Kimmel incorrectly insinuated that Kirk’s alleged killer, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson of Utah, was a MAGA follower.

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr quickly warned the agency could review ABC’s broadcast licenses, while affiliates Sinclair and Nexstar threatened to stop carrying the show altogether.

Disney executives, including CEO Bob Iger and entertainment co-chair Dana Walden, convened with Kimmel after his suspension, weighing whether the program could return by Sept. 22, people familiar with the talks told Bloomberg.

But insiders said the company is equally focused on security, after employees began receiving death threats and saw their personal information leaked online, according to several reports.

Before the taping of Kimmel’s show on Wednesday, the host planned to blast MAGA and Trump officials for purposely distorting his words.

He reportedly shared his intentions with Walden.

Walden told colleagues she feared Kimmel’s plan to address the controversy on-air Wednesday would worsen the situation, the Wall Street Journal reported.

After huddling with Iger, she informed Kimmel the show would be pulled indefinitely.

The decision sparked outrage in Hollywood. Former late-night host David Letterman blasted Disney at an Atlantic event, saying, “You can’t go around firing somebody because you’re fearful or trying to suck up to an authoritarian criminal administration in the Oval Office.”

Walden, Disney Entertainment co-chair, warned Kimmel’s planned remarks could escalate tensions.

“Lost” co-creator Damon Lindelof posted that he wouldn’t want to work for a company that benched Kimmel.

Unions for actors and producers also criticized the suspension, calling it a chilling move that could push other comedians to self-censor.

Kimmel, 57, has hosted the ABC show since 2003 and was in the middle of planning a live Brooklyn broadcast this month.

The program, which loses money but draws loyal viewers, is one of Disney’s last footholds in late-night after CBS announced Stephen Colbert’s show will end in 2026.

President Trump, who has long sparred with Kimmel, seized on the turmoil.

“Bad ratings, lack of talent,” he said Thursday aboard Air Force One when asked why the host was sidelined. On Truth Social, he suggested NBC cancel Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers next.

Here’s the latest on Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension after Charlie Kirk comments

Carr, who praised Sinclair and Nexstar for dropping the show, said local stations have an “obligation to serve the public interest.”

Both broadcasters face pending FCC business, including Nexstar’s $6.2 billion bid for Tegna, which requires agency approval.

The host used Monday’s show to accuse Republicans of exploiting Charlie Kirk’s death for political gain.

The suspension has rattled ABC advertisers, some of which told the Journal they may shift commercial buys or demand refunds for the canceled shows.

Inside Disney, executives stressed to Kimmel that they want to de-escalate, sources told Bloomberg. They have not asked him to apologize, and he has no plans to.

Meanwhile, staffers remain on edge. John Wolk, a standards and practices employee on the show, posted on Facebook: “We live in very unnerving and surreal times which is all I’ll say now on the matter.”

The El Capitan Entertainment Centre in Hollywood, where Kimmel tapes his show, has ramped up security in recent days.

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr warned ABC’s licenses could be reviewed after Kimmel’s remarks.

Former President Barack Obama accused Trump of embracing “his own version of cancel culture.” A Democratic senator called the suspension political censorship.

Legal experts warned that networks are likely to cave under regulatory pressure. “Whenever the cudgel has been pretty significant, sooner or later the network caved,” media lawyer Lee Levine told the Journal.

ABC is still holding commercial spots for “Kimmel Live!” in case the program returns next week. But as of Friday, no decision has been made on when — or if — Kimmel will be back on the air.

The Post has sought comment from Disney and ABC.

To each their own, but I'm struggling to appreciate the nexus between Texas One Fund/Burnt Ends and Texas Football and MAGA.  I appreciate that Texas is a public institution with Abbot largely dictating policy.  But like the rest of the country, the players themselves are largely diverse in every aspect including political beliefs.

If people are letting politics impact their sports fandom, then what's the fucking point?  I would probably just leave the country at that point.   Sports is the best release from all this shit IMO.   Politics/Trump BS are the absolute last thing on my mind every college football Saturday and very thankful for that.

I liked what Dan Lanning had to say last week:
