So companies should now lower prices that went up because of tariffs, right? RIGHT?! (I know they’re not)

I do think a lot of prices will go down, just not as low as they were previously. Foreign goods in a lot of markets cost more than domestic goods now, and those sellers will want their price point to be lower again.

Well here we go.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Aviation Administration announced Wednesday that it will reduce air traffic by 10% across 40 “high-volume” markets beginning Friday morning to maintain safety during the ongoing government shutdown.

The agency is confronting staffing shortages caused by air traffic controllers, who are working unpaid, with some calling out of work during the shutdown, resulting in delays across the country.

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said the agency is not going to wait for a problem to act, saying the shutdown is causing staffing pressures and “we can’t ignore it.”

Bedford and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said they will meet later Wednesday with airline leaders to figure out how to safely implement the reduction.

After last night, I'm guessing this thing gets hashed out by the end of next week? Until yesterday, I think they truly believed that Fox News et al. was successful in convincing the country that the shutdown was Democrats' fault.

40 high volume markets…  when you start combining neighboring airports into a market like dfw/dal or Houston’s two, to get down to 40th market we’re talking like Omaha or Boise type shit.

If it doesn't get done by Thanksgiving, Mike Johnson should just seppuku himself. Although that requires the ability to feel shame.

Maybe we will get lucky and this thing will extend past Thanksgiving.

If they could shutdown Houston Oceanic on routes across the Gulf to South America on the 18th...that'd be okay.

Democrats better not fucking cave.  In fact they should up their demands.  “No deal until we get Medicare for fucking all and you’re lucky we’re not demanding King Asshole remove the tariffs (but only because SCOTUS looks like it might take care of that for us.  Go ahead and abolish the filibuster, UBI will be priority #1 when we get back in power, bitch.”

I guarantee that United Airlines is not going to have to cut just a whole lot of flights.

But I have to tell you--I'm not exactly sure there's a mechanism for this under the Airline Deregulation Act.  The point of the ADA is that the government doesn't get to tell the airlines how many flights they get to operate.  There are a handful of exceptions at certain airports that have unique restrictions like slot controls, a perimeter rule, or gate limitations (LGA, DCA, and DAL, respectively).  But broadly speaking, I don't know that the DOT has legal authority to tell the airlines to cut air traffic by 10%.*

And if you're the airlines, you're telling the DOT "fuck that--tell general aviation it's grounded."  It's honestly a pretty reasonable take.  It's definitely a take that the industry group (A4A) will take up.  But it's also something real and tangible that Democrats can take up.  "The Trump Administration made you miss Thanksgiving so that Elon Musk could fly his Gulfstream to Bermuda."

That fucking sells.

* Cue @Brisketexan jumping on here to tell me that I'm "soooo adorable" for thinking that this Administration needs legal authority to do anything.

Having worked with new tech for flight tracking, this is spot on. No rich mofo is going to miss their vacation, but grandma is going to get stuck in O'Hare.

What they can do is limit overspace. Done all the time. That is run by the FAA.

I think it makes things less likely for a re-opening. They know they are going to get smashed next year so why not inflict as much pain and cruelty as possible in the meantime?

My Trump apologist uncle had a big party planned for this Saturday night, his son in NYC is bringing his very serious girlfriend in town to meet the whole family. He's had it planned for months.

He just texted us that the party is cancelled due to "travel issues", his son in NYC and another cousin of mine in LA aren't able to fly in. He was laughing about the shutdown last week saying everything was still running normally. Don't think he's laughing now!

My son is flying in from NY this weekend. No cancellation (yet).

Because as last night makes very clear, Republicans are taking a disproportionate amount of the blame for the shutdown.  Hell--even Trump has said so.  And by the way, once the president (of any party) says "we're taking the blame" for anything, the blame is placed.  There's no walking that back.

If I'm the Democrats, I hold out for everything I've ever had on my wish list.  Because why would I want to reopen the government and let Trump pass his priorities through a unified Congress?  Fuck that--leave the government shut down for the next year, and let Republicans take the blame.  They'd get fucking wiped out in the midterms.

Which is why, one way or another, there are going to be just enough Republicans who like their jobs to get through some compromise.

Yep, or start a countdown to the midterms where 75% of them would lose.  The people have spoken.  Let's see if the Democrats listen.  Sadly, I have my doubts.

Democrats are morons who would shockingly come from behind to run up a 21 point lead going into the 4th quarter, then call the other coach and say “what’s say we call it a tie?”
I hate them so much. Or at least, I hate their current leadership.

And the airlines aren’t just going to lose just 10% of their flights. Who the fuck is going to choose to fly if there is an increasingly likelihood your flights are going to get fucked? Who wants to get stuck an extra night in Des Moines? Anyone who doesn’t have to fly won’t fly. They’re going to start seeing their bookings fall sharply tomorrow.

Currently sitting on a United 737-700 with a seating capacity of 126 pax with 39 other people. I have taken this same flight once a week for the last 5 weeks and it’s never been this empty. I’m wondering if all the press about security lines at IAH over the weekend is causing people to bail on traveling.

Also got this from American earlier this evening:

Quote

To our valued customer:

Due to the prolonged government shutdown, the FAA has directed all airlines, including American, to reduce flight schedules at certain airports starting Friday, Nov. 7.

While we are awaiting additional information from the FAA to determine which flights will be impacted, we expect the vast majority of our customers’ travel will be unaffected. Still, customers are traveling for many reasons — all of them important — and disrupting plans is the last thing we want. For that, we apologize.

There is no need for customers to take any action. Any customer whose flight is impacted will be proactively notified by American Airlines. We will do our best to notify customers as early as possible. As always, we encourage all customers to check their flight status via the American Airlines mobile app or aa.com, which will provide real-time updates.

We remain grateful to the air traffic controllers, TSA officers, CBP officers and other federal employees who are working right now without pay — all to get our customers where they need to be safely — as well as our American Airlines team members who always work to take the best care of our customers.

Thank you for trusting us with your travel.

GOOD.

More pain. Maximum pain. Wreck the fucking economy. Top to bottom. Bankrupt companies, bankrupt multiple airlines. Lose hundreds of thousands of jobs. MORE.

“Pain” is the only language the American idiot speaks. So, we should want them to hear it, loud.

A few more months of this, maybe they’ll BEGIN to realize that voting for someone who promises to fuck over everyone is fucking stupid, and we shouldn’t do that any more.

But I doubt it. Either way, fuck the ownership class who voted for this so they could get tax cuts and play inside baseball with the admin. And fuck all of their workers who voted for this so they could see Mexicans and trans people treated like shit.

When you vote for an evil shitstorm, you always end up covered in shit. Always. Enjoy it, this is what you wanted.

We are getting the America we wanted, and the America we deserve. Good.
