Tearjerker Strong, damn.

Be fair, though... when you run into a guy who can't remember his #1 guy's name, or his own zip code, seems like you might want to start looking for a replacement, pronto.

My favorite zip code story concerns the fella who moved to Pasadena and came up with a quick mnemonic to remember his new zip code. His kid asked what it was, and he replied "Nine-one? Oh, one-one" in a pleased manner. Kid said "Fuck, dad, it's nine, ten, eleven!"

Someone needs to explain to me better why Freeman is considered a real candidate for any of these jobs.  He’s getting paid 9 million a year. He is sitting on a top 5 recruiting class. He has coached ND to the championship game and has a very good shot at the playoff this year.  He is coaching a team that’s on national TV all the time and is college football royalty.  Their alum base and boosters are, frankly, a higher class of people and easier to deal with than most other schools. Brian Kelly went off to the bad, bad SEC and a school with all the “advantages” and is running off the road.

Maybe—maybe— OSU, Texas are objectively “better” places to win big. They’re also more likely to get impatient with you faster. I cannot at all see what State College or Gainesville offers.

To be fair, Brain Kelly is a terrible coach who couldn't win at Notre Dame and now can't win at LSU. Notre Dame is thankful he's gone and are better for it. LSU is ready for him to leave and are worse off since his arrival.

Listening to The Ticket in Dallas, Bob Sturm often talks about how fanbases in this new NIL, 12 (maybe ultimately 16) team playoff, somewhat more parity world are going to have to adjust expectations around the notion that 8/9 win seasons are not fireable offenses.

I don't think anybody is listening.

Premise of OP:  Correct

Probably correct.  All everyone talks about is how the big dogs dominate NIL and maybe the portal, but there's a strange new parity now.

Bunch of coaches getting pay raises this year

I would pay them a shit ton per year.  But fuck these payouts are just wasted NIL opportunities for improving your roster.  No way coaches should still receive these payouts with NIL.

Seems like a real opportunity for teams that aren’t firing their coaches to get a comparative advantage by funneling that money into their rosters.

So the corchs buyout should become part of the equation moving forward. Pay market rate, plus’s topper (% of said corch buyout) to not get out bid.

Always has been. I struggle to think of schools who upgrade after booting coaches that regularly turn in 8-10 win seasons. I’ve posted elsewhere that it’s easier to turn 10-2 into six wins than 12 wins.  I think Nebraska tossing Solích kicked this off.

But you’re locked in this spiral even more now with NIL because you are beholden to irrational fans to fund the roster.  You can’t wait them out a couple years if they get pissed. And look— unlike pro sports, the NIL donors are not making any money. They are literally paying to win now. There’s not a case to tell them to wait.

To me it has all the markings of a bubble that’s gonna burst bigly if the market cools for an extended period.  No one except the coaches and players are really making money here. Most ADs are on a razor edge.

It's a correct view overall but it's not NIL or the playoff, it's the consolidation into superconferences that is the primary thing depressing records. When the top 20 teams were in 8 different conferences it was much much easier to be a 10-2 team.

I don't know why it makes me laugh, but we've been hearing Phil Knight is making Oregon a powerhouse since Mike Bellotti was roaming the sidelines. Will they ever get there? They feel like aggy with substantially more money and they've made the title game twice, but got absolutely throttled in their second NC game, and in the CFP last year by Ohio State. I think Lanning is good coach, but I don't think he's ever winning them a title. B1G title, yes. NC? No. Bellotti coached there from 1995-2008, and the "powerhouse" thing was started somewhere around 1996 when Nike got involved.

Bellotti was a very good coach and won a lot of games, which fueld the phrase "Oregon is building a powerhouse", but it got traction in 2007 when Bellotti hired Kelly; Kelly then becomes head coach, left for the Eagles, then Mark Helfrich began on a high note winning 12 and 11 games his first two season before winning 9 and then getting fired after winning just 4 in 2016. Then in 2017 they hired Willie Taggart, so that set them back after he left for Florida State and got his comeuppance. They decided to hire Mario Cristobal for some reason, who had one 10 win season and a 12 win season and shitty seasons in-between. Now we arrive at Dan Lanning, and the Oregon is building a powerhouse has been going strong for 18 years, so at what point do you just admit that you're lying to yourself? Oregon is a good place to play, but they aren't winning a championship anytime soon.

They couldn't do it with the OG Bellotti, not with Kelly, not with Helfrich, lol @ Willie Taggart, who seems more in line with Tyrone Willingham with his decision making skills and ineptitude. Cristobal left and has a shitty record at Miami in 4 years going 5-7, 7-6, 10-3, and currently sits at 6-1. Let's see how he finishes. Now here we are with Dan Lanning...

Now, that's not to say they can't make it, because they have two times and lost 2 times.

2010 - L 22-19 Auburn BCS

2015 - L 42-20 Ohio State First year of the Playoffs

Made the CFP and got river shit smeared on them by fOSU to the tune of 41-21 (uncanny how their first NC game ended almost the exact same way, minus 2 digits)

To me, they don't have "it". Lanning has recruited extremely well, but he's too cocky and he doesn't seem to understand humility. He started at Oregon the same year as Sark.

Recruiting (I'm using 247):

2022 - #16

2923 - #9

2024 - #4

2025 - #3

Not bad at all. Actually really good, but there just seems to be something that keeps them from winning it all. I don't know what it is. Will Stein is a tremendous OC that I'm jealous of, and Tosh Lupoi as their DC. Their defensive ranking is skewed because they have only played one team wihh a pulse, and that was Indiana, who brought the wood for the beating in Eugene. God damnit I'm mad they get Will Stein and we have....regressed every season on offense.

My point being, or question really is, does anyone really believe Oregon can win it all? I don't and I'll die on that hill.

This. Who exactly do some of these schools expect to hire that they know is going to be better? Feels like a lot of schools are going to end up with their 3rd or 4th choice and probably a great chance doing this whole thing 3-5 years from now.

But it’s all relative. 9-3 in an 16 team playoff and always getting bounced first round ain’t good enough either.

There’s no such thing as “it.” Oregon can win an NC and would have already in 2010 if not for perhaps the second best player to step on a CFB field in the past 25 years.  They are recruiting and portaling at a NC caliber level and if they keep doing that they will have a good chance to win it all. Doesn’t mean they will, but there’s no magic “it” stopping them.

OK, that's cool. A simple "yes" would have sufficed.

I believe that LSU owes him >$50M which would be more than 5% of the school's total endowment.

LSU alums have some interesting priorities in giving.

I read several years ago that they're the only college in the country whose athletic program receives more in donations than the academic side.

LSU may be the most embarrassing state flagship college in the country. I’m having a hard time coming up with a better candidate.

And some middling coaches are going to get PAID to stay put.

If I’m Auburn, I’m doing all I can to stay off this ride. Let it go another year.

You don’t need to be a blue blood to have billionaires in your alumni list.

Why is this a surprise?

Them and New Mexico were the last two states to outlaw dog fighting and cock fighting.

Old Mexico is actually better than New Mexico in many ways.  Louisiana is in a class with New Mexico.

You youngsters might not recall this but for their gubernatorial election back in the late 80’s or early 90’s, their two candidates were:

Edwin Edwards, alleged crook who bragged that he had been indicted a dozen times but never convicted (until later on, along with the DeBartolo family), and who joked that Viagra was formulated using his blood samples as a design

David Duke, neo-Nazi and former grand dragon of the KKK

That was the top two candidates in their entire state that year!

My wife is from the Midwest.  When she first moved here she was surprised how big football was, and she said it must be a southern thing and referenced the hilarity of The Water Boy.

I assured her that The Water Boy is a documentary, not a comedy.  Every aspect of Louisiana in that film is accurate.

It is NIL + super conferences.  There used to be a MASSIVE talent gap in the roster of a top 3 team vs a top 20 team vs. a top 50 team.  Now that margin is significantly slimmer top to bottom.  This is now the NFL with parity.  The SEC is a perfect example this year.  The bottom of the league is good enough to win a game against anyone if they play well and top team brings their C game (just like in the NFL).  I think fans will adjust and have more realistic expectations once playoffs are expanded.  I think it definitely needs to go to 16 because there are actually probably close to that many teams that could make a legitimate run if they got hot at the right time.
