Weird College Roommate

I had one who played Stratomatic football and baseball ALL the time.  He had a lucky cowboys polo he wore to every test he took, and seldom washed it.  Left Austin every weekend to go home to see his girlfriend.  Never went to a football game or campus event at all.   Always amazed me how he treated the place like some sort of commuter college.

My first roommate in an apartment had a weird diet.  He only ate three things.   1)Frozen mixed vegetables (that would be the whole meal, a huge plate).   2)Frozen french fries fried in a fry daddy and 3) Safeway thin sliced ham on white bread with mayo.   He took those to campus every single day for lunch.   Odd thing was an architecture major.  You would think his tastes would be a little more varied.  Oh yeah, only thing he drank was that red Hawaiian punch you made from a powder concentrate.  His breakfast was cheerios and milk.   We did not speak to each other the last 2 months of our lease.  Would leave messages about bills and such on the fridge.   He was not a bad guy, he just was a lot different than I was.

I lived in a weird house off South Lamar with 6 guys and whatever collection of girlfriends and jabronis who were hanging around.  One of the guys was a friend of several of ours from high school who had just gotten back from his Mormon mission trip (so, we were all juniors and he was I think starting at ACC to try and transfer to Texas).  It's hard to say what precisely was weird, other than we were a bunch of relatively normal college kids who... are musicians, drink a fair amount, hang out with artsy kids and hipsters, and this guy just got back from knocking on doors in Mexico for 2 years to try and convert people to Mormonism.  One particular weird moment was when his dad came up to help him move some stuff in or bring some clothes or something.  It's just some innocuous time of day on a weekend and I walk into the kitchen just... clothed and not drunk or anything to top off a bowl of cereal, I see the guy's dad and say "Hey! Nice to meet you!", and he looks at his son and says "BIRDS OF A FEATHER, DANE.  BIRDS OF A FEATHER.

We had a sorority sister take over the lease for one summer.

She wasn’t in our close friend group but she seemed nice enough and we were happy to have her move in for the summer since our other roommate had an internship in Atlanta and she would have been in a tight spot paying for two places.

Well, you never really know someone till you live with them.

She had a creepy ass boyfriend who was there all the time and they were either fucking or fighting. And they did both loudly.

She didn’t tell us she was bringing a little yappy dog - that wasn’t housebroken.

And she cooked and ate the grossest food. She loved to cook stinky turnips and rutebega. She ate pickled penrose sausage straight out of the can. And she ate tomatoes like apples and she salted every bite.

Bitch was from Brundidge and a transfer from Auburn. I should have known.

Man, y'all are tame...

My luck of the draw freshman roommate at Jester thought he was a vampire. He and his weird friends would stay out all night running around the UT campus playing some stupid vampire role playing game. Then he would skip class all day and sleep. Repeat next day.

He was also on LSD and would tell me about vivid hallucinations involving werewolves and such.

He was a heavy smoker... Yet never washed his sheets once in the whole semester. His original white pillowcase was brown 3 months later. Because he couldn't smoke in the room he would smoke in the showers thinking somehow it was undetectable. Nope, just smelled like wet smoke.

I honestly don't recall him going to class a single time the first semester. Shockingly he flunked out and was gone by January.

That dude was weird to the extreme.

My first semester roommate at Jester was fucking weird. Totally anti-social. Back then (mid-90s) we had dialup internet. If you were connected to the internet and somebody tried to call you, the internet connection would fall out or something. Anyway, one time my fucking weird roommate is on the internet, and a friend of mine tries to call me, so his connection gets messed up and he answers and says “could you please never call here again?”. He would never mingle with anybody on the floor. And the most ridiculous thing about that stupid fucking dude was...are you sitting down for this...he was a nursing student. I cannot conceive of a more ill-suited career for that fucking asshole than nursing.

Had one that collected all the empty beer cans from everyone on our hall.

His plan was to build a beer can couch.  We had multiple trash bags full of cans in our suite after two weeks.  The stale beer smell and gnats were unbearable.

We fought about it daily but he was adamant.

He went home for a family event the 3rd weekend of 1st semester and we took all the cans to a recycle shop, got a few bucks for them, and bought more beer.

Another guy in that suite built a shrine to his girlfriend back home.  He put dried up boutonnières from their homecomings / proms, movie ticket stubs, and notes she had written him all around a framed picture of her on his desk. He'd also taken snapshots of her and got some photo shop to make them into posters....he had them all over his side of the room and on the ceiling.  She wasn't bad looking but not poster worthy...much less multiple posters.  I'm guessing he either ended up killing and eating her or they got married and raised 9 kids in a trailer park in FL.

At fall break we had two other guys down the hall from our pledge class who hated their pot-luck situations as well, so we moved our two goofballs out and moved the other guys in - When they got back after break all their shit was set up perfectly like they had left it...just in another suite down the hall.  They never bitched, at least to us, so they probably hated us as much as we hated them and were glad it happened.

Not my roommate story but friend got matched up with a highly dysfunctional homeschooled kid. Masturbated openly, woukd wake up to find him hovering over him, shit in the ckoset, never washed his clothes. The University was so embarrassed they moved him out and gave him a suite to himself.

First semester freshman year roommate was a chronic masturbater.  His activity would sometimes wake me up in the middle of the night.  I would yell at him and throw a shoe at him to get him to knock it off.

Spent most nights at girlfriend dormroom, which was great but stressful because she kept getting threatened about getting kicked out of dorm by the RA.  Her roommate was gone alot, I can’t remember why.  Good times.

lived alone in west campus my freshman year but moved in with a friend i made in French class sophomore year.

she was a liberal goth chick from ohio, a virgin, didn't party, and had never had a close female friend before. she had a chemical imbalance and was obsessed with Disney. like, she wanted to decorate the apartment with Disney shit. pretty much the exact opposite of me and where i came from (think Houston burbs in the 80s). i think i thought she was interesting and it would be neat to live with someone so different.

9 month lease off far west...at about month 5 i started coming home and locking myself in my room regularly. just too many differences, got to where i couldn't stand her.

plus, she had a COMPLETELY psycho cat that would attack unprovoked. she had to have his front and back claws removed, and then he'd still try to climb your leg just using his teeth! she had those filed down as well finally. he'd bat at my bedroom door and make that crazy angry cat sound. she finally had to have him put down.

i eventually moved out and got another roommate that was great and i shared a bedroom with for 4 years.

her feelings were hurt and i kind of felt bad for a few years, she really didn't know how to have 'girl friends'.

but, 20 years later we're both still in austin and still friends, hang out occasionally. everybody chills with age :)

My first roomie was an ultra rich Mexican kid from the valley who was all into punk rock. He dressed like shit and would hang out with drag rats and do heroin in my room with them multi times a week.

Then he disappeared. At the end of the year he pops up out of no where to get his shit and his laptop That i used the entire year out of our room with his dad like nothing.

My luck of the draw first college roommate was tall and thin and pasty. He'd drink a weird brew of some cleansing tea every night. It stunk up the room. When he spoke on the phone with his mom you could sometimes hear the anger seething in his voice. He was very quiet, wasn't interested in either sports, music or girls, had zero friends and I got a strange vibe from the guy though I can't recall many specific details about it and maybe there were none, I just don't recall. I hated spending time in my room; when he'd go away for a weekend it was like a huge dark cloud was lifted. I went to the dean of housing, told him about how uncomfortable I was with this guy and asking to be moved. The dean's attitude was, "You want me to go to the trouble of assigning you a different room because he makes a strange smelling tea?" I said, it's just very difficult to explain, he makes me uncomfortable and I am pretty sure he's gay. I don't know why I said that...I think it must have been my fall back in case the other reasons didn't work. Anyway, the school moved him to a single room within a couple days and I ended up with a nice, nerdy roommate.

Spoiler

After the first summer break, I returned for my soph year and one of my friends asked if I had heard about what happened to that first roommate. I hadn't. It was shocking. To make this less sickening to type, I'll just use the scientific terms to tell you what he did. Matricide. Necrophilia (with his mom). Then he turned himself in to the police. I learned later his older brother had committed suicide before he (my old roommate) went to college and he apparently blamed his mom.

Senior year at KU I moved into a big house with my close friend I worked with, her boyfriend who worked on the road most weeks and was rarely there, and one of her best friends from high school. The best friend seemed okay at first and she worked for the cable company so we every channel and free on demand porn before online porn was as prevalent. Well, they started doing coke on the weekends at the house with this shady drug dealer dude. Not the biggest deal just partying. I'm not into it but whatever. Well, Honey, yea that's her stupid name, decided to go from coke to meth and got fucking addicted to it as well as starting to date her meth dealer. She became really volatile as one does who already has a shitty personality on meth and started going kind of nuts as we were obviously distancing ourselves from her. Miraculously the land lord decided to sell the house so we took the opportunity and moved the fuck out of there like a month or two before we had to be out leaving Honey's methhead ass behind. She decided to try and sue us for it but because I never got served the case was thrown out. She then tried to get us to appear on Judge Mathis with her insane ass.

Oh, and before that I had a roommate who was premed and actually ended up going to U of Minnesota for a joint PhD/MD program. Well he never left his room, kept a pile of recycling for months before taking to the recycling plant, and his alarm went off anytime day or night so he had the most insane sleep schedule ever. Kind of like Kramer's on Seinfeld when he's trying to be like Da Vinci. My friend from the Marines who came and stayed a weekend called him BTK lol. I remember walking back from campus and he just stared straight ahead rather than saying hi or even acknowledging that his roommate was passing by him.

Yeah, Chopper walks away with the prize, we are all just playing for second.

Had a feral Bangladeshi roommate who was living a shadow life pretending to be a student, but who was actually majoring in Dear God Don't Send Me Back To Bangladesh. He'd work enough odd jobs to buy loads of rice and chicken, which he would boil up into this pungent sticky yellow stew that you'd eat with your fingers. Wasn't bad, but it was all he'd cook, and the house reeked of it. Door knobs would be all sticky with it.

Then for a change, he bought a grill and wanted to cook with it inside the kitchen, lighter fluid and charcoal fumes everywhere.

Dude was true to his upbringing. I was driving him somewhere when he flew off on a rant of "That is why everybody HATES the JOOS!", I'm like "No we don't," dude looked like I'd told him I was a member of the Purple Squid Race from Planet Squidtron. He was backwoods. Another time, I invited him to come see my band, the bar paid us in food and beer. He's swilling a pitcher of Shiner like a devout muslim, and tick tock decides to start screaming about gay people. "We Do Not Have Gay People in Bangladesh, If We See Gay People We KILL Them!" Then he seized up and got all quiet.

Me and the drummer had each laid a hand on one of his thighs. Crazy little fucker probably got a hard-on.

Last I saw him, he'd managed to get a real visa and no longer had to play his student act. He stood a lot taller, hopefully wasn't wound quite as tight. No idea if he made a life for himself, or ended up in Guantanamo.

I don't know. After my post I was thinking more about saying that to the Dean. Somehow a friend figured that would get the Dean to move him or me...so it became my last ditch effort, considering nothing I said before that had caused the Dean the slightest bit of concern. It's laughable to me because I was trying to tell the Dean about the guy's shitty personality. I was too dumb to understand he was a severe sociopath and I obviously did a shitty job explaining his defects. But the contrived, "he's gay" got the Dean to act with blinding speed.

Ok, not my story but one of my good friends:

This was in late 90’s freshman year at jester a friend of mine met a gay dude in one of her classes. She was a huge faghag, so they clicked, bonded and quickly became attached at the hip.

This guy was a life of the party type. Funny, quick wit, engaging, cheerful and just all around nice guy without seeming like he’s trying. After Freshman yr, the two of them moved into a apt where we had many parties, then the year after they moved into a cool house with a friend and her boyfriend. They would always meet at the union for lunch or I would wave to them while they were sitting in the 6pack sometimes between classes. As the years passed, they both got part time jobs at County Line waiting tables, had lots of the same friends and life was good/normal.

Then, the management at the County Line got a call from an irate customer. They had had a business dinner there and were billed the wrong amount. After finding the ticket and some back and forth they realized that the coustomer had tipped $8, but were charged a tip of $28. Gay friend, as he later admitted in court, had changed the tip. Not only that but he had been doing it for years and with other servers ticket too including my friend (not sure how but he was collecting that money too). County line fired everyone who had a ticket with a changed tip.

But this was just the beginning. Naturally, Gay Friend had been blowing smoke about the County Line situation and My friend was totally on his side: ‘Of course they’re wrong, this is bullshit’. But when she got fired, she called her manager and he filled her in on the real situation. To say she was shocked would be an understatement. She said she felt like she had vertigo, was dizzy and nauseous. It wasn’t the stealing so much, it was how adamant he was in his lie to her and that he had used her to steal. That was the one fact that made her think it was bullshit to the end.

Well, now Gay Friend had pissed of an Italian woman, so My Friend goes crazy girlfriend. She acts like nothing is wrong and when Gay Friend goes to class she and her other roommates go into his room and search it. At first it was going to be a “plain view” sort of search but turned into them ripping his room apart.

So, here what they found: Turns out Gay Friend wasn’t Gay Friend, he was someone else who had a long criminal history of fraud, theft and violence. Gay Friend was never a student at UT, he dressed as a student and hung around campus for 4 years, actually regularly attending some large 301 classes and their labs where he met My Friend. This wasn’t to get a free education or to meet people, it was so he could visit professors in their office hours. Once he was familiar around the office he would steal money, cc, IDs and job pay info so he could steal the identity of as many people in the office he could. He had stolen key cards to Jester and would go hang out on My Friends floor like he lived there. Just, one ever went to his room. If he needed to sleep he slept on the Jester lobby couches or in the PCL with books out like he had fallen asleep studying. He had also stolen all of My Friends, a few of her friends and both his roommates info and had opened credit cards on all of them.

But then it got weird. In a couple of spiral notebooks they found were packed names and writing. As they just flipped through it My Friend caught a glimpse of her name and turned to that section. In the notebook was everything deeply personal, secret or horribly embarrassing thing that she had ever told him meticulously recorded. Same for her friends and roommates. They had found his Blackmail book. When the time came, he would slowly threaten to tell their secrets about being raped, cheating, doing drugs, STDs- whatever.

Later when they were clearing/throwing out his shit, they came across a collection of extremely disturbing porn. Very young girls and boys, 70’s snuff, videos of sex with women after they had been beaten to convulsions, genital mutilation- shit like that. They are so shocked and want no more to do with Gay Friend so, even tho they later regretted it,  just threw it all out.

When Gay Friend returned from ‘class’ the police were there and he was taken into custody. He had no money and now no friends so he sat there until his trial. Iirc he plead guilty and got something like 12yrs.

Had a friend who’s “best friend”/roommate turned out to be a psycho violent con-artist thief that assumed someone else’s identity and pretended to be a student as a cover to steal other identities of administrators and friends he made for over 4 years. He also planned to blackmail them later with all the info he obtained pretending to be their friend over the years. After he was arrested they found seriously fucked up p0rn too.

Im pretty sure he pled and got something like 12yrs

It was before the internets but there's still a fair bit of info out there because the family was very wealthy and the father was Reagan's attorney. http://articles.latimes.com/1994-09-08/news/cb-35920_1_palos-verdes-estates

According to the article linked, the son was not charged for raping the mother, "because police could not determine if the rape had occurred before the murder." So I learned something new. If you find something about what happened to the perp please let me know. When I checked in the CA Dept of Corrections database about a year ago he was not listed. So I don't know if he died or somehow got released. He was found criminally insane and involuntarily committed after trial. This happened before it got a lot harder to prove yourself insane as a criminal defense.

hmm...so many stories.

dorm roommate #1 was from deep in the valley and apparently had never been to a major city before. didn't shower the entire semester. wore the same two outfits that he'd rotate every other day. washed those two outfits about once a month in the sink with only water. none of my friends would ever step into the room because the smell was indescribable. he was a really nice guy that had only one chunky lesbian friend that would tell us how cool it was to ride the campus loop (40 acres shuttle?) round and round because she had a clit piercing. i think he was the valedictorian in a school of 20 or so students...but he didn't last to become a sophomore. most likely homesick.
