She didn't have anything to do with the initial play of the ball at that point. Dunn kept the English player on the left onside and by the time the ball was played toward the middle that girl was back onside. You don't have to completely abstain from play until possession changes if you're in an offside position, just until you're back onside.

I love how she routinely anticipates herself to an outside position, which requires her to anticipate at full speed to catch up to opposing forwards who are open solely because of Dunn’s anticipatory poor positioning and fundamentals.  Amazing!

She’s a striker playing left back

I know, I know.  My point is: at defense, she is not a strength of this team.  Frankly, she sucks at D.  All the fawning press after the France game for her “excellent defense” is driving me bonkers.  She’s our worst defender, and it’s not close.

Unless you are the US Men's National Team on the road in Central America.

I don't even like soccer and I've been swept up in to this.  Seems like the last two matches the US just gutted it out at the end.

Actually, we are becoming the women's version of the mannschaft (the German's men's team).

The ball is round, the pitch is rectangular, the clock is 90 minutes, and the US women win.

Also, England continuing their nation's horrid terminal 40-year problem with spot kicks.

That's all folks.

One of the guys on the Kick Around, which is the Ticket's soccer show, said the US women better win this World Cup because things are going to be drastically different in 4 years.  All the Euro countries are now starting to pour money into women's soccer, including and especially Spain, England, Italy, France, and the Netherlands.  The world is already starting to catch up to us, and there's no telling what things will look like in 4 years.  The European women's domestic leagues are gonna flourish.  This should be the last time in a while where we are the clear and prohibitive favorite.

Maybe our gals can go and play in those euro leagues and get even better, instead of whatever pro league is here.

Clear and prohibitive favorites?  We were co-favorites with France, with Germany a step behind and a host of others given a chance to win.  The new Euro money isn't going to impact 2023.  The elite players for 2023 have already been identified and placed in elite training.  Most have been in elite training for years and are currently on their national team.  The real threat will come when and if participation numbers in Europe increase dramatically and the money gets spread out among more clubs.

Girls and boys soccer in the US are not directly comparable despite the lazy punditry applying the same analysis to girls soccer that they apply in diagnosing the problems afflicting the USMNT.  Soccer attracts a much higher percentage of elite girl athletes in the US compared to boys soccer and the NWSL is much closer to the pro Euro leagues than the MLS is.  Girls soccer development in the US is light years ahead of where it was a decade ago and will continue to improve.

28 year old Rose Lavelle might be able to win a World Cup by herself.

My life is pretty much run by girls soccer at this point.  Just from what I know (maybe not much) I'm betting we're gonna be just fine.

Isn’t this offsides? The England player up top is the one who drew the penalty.

....

Here is a better view of that play closer to when the pass is played.

image.png

The ball is played to Stokes on the left who is clearly onside (Don't blame Dunn on this, it Sauerbrunn playing her on). Yes White is in an offside position here, but not part of this play. When the pass is eventually played to her, she is back in an onside position for Stoke's pass. The play was correctly onside.

And who cares? They missed the penalty, We win, they lose.

Meh. Sadly, women's sports are never going to be huge moneymakers.  While Europe and others will catch up to us when it comes to women's soccer and participation in women's sports generally, it's still going to be a level enough playing field that our population will keep us at or near the top.

Taking a 10 year old and making him property of Man U works for men because of the massive amount of fan money pouring in when that kid grows up. For women, that won't be the case and few countries come close to our amateur sports apparatus for low revenue sports.

Furthermore, men's basketball is popular in Europe, they use the soccer style club team method rather than high school and college sports.  They are still largely non-competitive with us even though we don't throw much money into development pre-college.

It seems like the black athlete is currently a little bit underrepresented in US women's soccer (just based on the eyeball test). I think that, similar to tennis, as soccer continues to gain popularity and draws athletes from the "non-suburbs", the US may benefit. It would help to have a Mia Hamm level popularity black women's player to get all those little girls on the pitch.
