This isn't the Twitter feud that we need, it's the Twitter feud we deserve.

Axl's response is...I don't know what he's saying.

I take it you haven’t visited the DT thread yet this morning.

Are we still debating the 100 percent not political topic of nurses who went to New York City paying New York City taxes on wages earned while in New York City?

Pretty much.

Mnuchin's initial response to Axl had a liberian flag on it instead of the US flag.  The rest is him saying hes not responsible for 70k deaths, isnt in a position of responsibility, and didnt tell people to travel during the pandemic unlike Mnuchin.

and we haven't even seen the fallout yet from the "early-opening" red states.

Fall out, fall downs, same thing.

Trump should have this inscription on the base of his statue in front of the West Virginia shit-hole location of the “Trump Presidential Library, Casino and Freedom Gift Shop”:

‘He Ended The Suffering of Millions of The Elderly and Infirm’

The military is going to have challenges enforcing that without testing and tracing.

The document says that if the candidate doesn't clear the pre-screening process, which includes taking temp and asking questions, they can go home and come back to re-apply. But, if he/she does get lab tested with positive results, that candidate is barred. It's a weird decision-making process.

ETA: It's kind of like they're encouraging candidates to NOT get tested and traced.

So maybe antibodies don't provide immunity?  DoD simply being overly careful in light of many unknowns?

That has to be some temporary measure to reduce spread, and/or they dont understand the long term health impacts to recruits.  Otherwise, youre basically destroying the ability to recruit long term.

The original tweet has disappeared...so we might want to back off for the moment. Here's the Military Times article on the topic, which makes it sound permanent:

“During the medical history interview or examination, a history of COVID-19, confirmed by either a laboratory test or a clinician diagnosis, is permanently disqualifying ...” the memo reads.

I read that as "permanent" not as a policy but as to eligibility for service under our current understanding of the virus and its potential long-term and even possible permanent effects, but subject to revision (as a policy) as more is learned about the virus.

Looks questionable. One time stamp, no date stamps. And it's in image format rather than Twitter format. I'd bet on it being fake.

If I wanted to troll Costco's mandatory mask rule (if one exists), I'd say, "I'd be happy to wear a mask in your store. Please sell me a box of twenty."

We made a deal with the government that we'd pause our lives for a while as they got their shit together.

Now we're arguing among ourselves about whether or not to open back up, but what has the government done with these eight weeks we gave them?

An incremental increase in testing. That appears to be it. So virtually nothing.

Instead of arguing amongst ourselves, everyone should be mad at everyone in elected offices. It shouldn't be a political issue, but we're all fucking morons.

And by politicizing the issue, elected officials can continue to hide from their duty to serve us.

One side is doing a better job than the other, but there is zero fucking doubt both are playing politics and it's infuriating.

Thank you for posting this.  Unfortunately I have some family members that are being swept up in all of this BS and I can't figure out what to do about it.  It's such a tough thing to deal with due to this very dynamic you mention - they completely shut out any information that is not from one of the kooks like Judy Mikovits.  It's f'n hard on me man, I wish I was better equipped to combat this.  I'd completely ignore it if I didn't think it could put my parents in harms way.

Most people aren't trained to question new information.  They seek "facts" that reinforce their gut instincts.  Some would say this has gotten worse over time, and that may be true.  I tend to believe it's always been part of human nature, but we're not only hearing more of it because of social media, it may be getting amplified because of the echo chamber effect that social media provides.

My first response to that video was "is she legit?"  My first response to criticisms debunking her work was "are these criticisms coming from someone with an agenda?"  I believe that's the way everything should be judged.  Ultimately, I dug in a bit and found enough info about her sketchy past (among other things) to conclude that the criticism of her work is sound.  I didn't just jump to that conclusion because it aligns with my political beliefs.  I am comfortable with that conclusion because my beliefs are constantly being evaluated when new information comes to light, and I consider them pretty damn battle tested.

This is exactly the problem and why so many of us on The Ledge or The Lanai ended up there.  I don't know of a way to make these people see what they believe in is simply wrong.  It's a religion.  It's a cult.

By "worse" I meant "the numbers are growing".  I'm not sure that's true -- I can't state with certainty we didn't have a 42% moron ratio prior to the millenium.  I do know for sure I didn't have to hear their bullshit.

I feel like I quote George Carlin about once a week these days:  half the people in the world have an IQ below 100.  Have you ever met someone with an IQ of 100?  They're fucking idiots.

Look at the people in your life pushing these conspiracy theories. I’d bet they fall in a certain stratum of IQ or academic record that is just above-average enough to breed confidence but not quite enough to convey competence. That’s what I’m seeing, at least.

We’re seeing the consequences of societal liberality and run amok humanism breaking down the old order of things. Stupid people always existed in the same numbers. But they weren’t empowered the way pop culture does now. What was considered crude and undesirable has often become points of cultural pride.

We stopped shaming morons. It should come as no surprise to us that they act and think shamelessly.

Was the old way of creating social outcasts problematic? Absolutely. We just haven’t figured out a way to keep the benefits while fixing things for he less fortunate and those who make an occasional mistake.

I think that's probably right, at leas towards the upper end.  Plenty of college grads, but typically not in disciplines that demand critical thought.  (This is not to say that all those with such degrees cannot think critically, but rather that it's quite possible to get through a bachelor's degree in certain majors without actually demonstrating any significant mental acuity relative to the average Joe.)

And, a bunch of them are just kinda dim.  They gain confidence because the echo chamber reinforces their beliefs.  They literally fall in the 1st and 4th quadrants (control theory).

I'd maybe concede that nationally, though I don't know what Democrats are supposed to do nationally with just the House. I don't really put a ton of blame on Senate Republicans either. POTUS has an enormous amount of power and responsibility in this situation. It's kind of what the executive branch is for.

State leadership isn't close. I know you've mentioned that you felt Democrats have been gun-shy in IL, and I definitely agree with you at least in regards to healthcare, but that pales in comparison to what's going on down here in SECSECSEC dumbfuckistan.

Democrats spent their entire first year in control of the House passing messaging bills they knew wouldn't make it through the Senate or get signed by Trump. They could keep doing that.  Pass a bill that provides unlimited financial support to workers and actual small businesses, that conditions any support to large business and banks on things like no executive bonuses, no buybacks, etc., testing and tracing, more funding for PPE and other emergency supplies, support for strained state budgets, etc. And then hammer the GOP for preferring to sacrifice the lives of thousands of ordinary Americans to protect their donors' pocketbooks and hammer Trump for being too fucking lazy to bother with doing the bare goddamn minimum that every other country is doing. It may end up only being marginally effective, but the margins matter and it'd certainly be better than literally doing nothing.

Fair...it's clear the biggest fucking problem, by a country mile, is the dumbest fuck in all of politics...who just happens to be President.  You have to ask  yourself, is it a coincidence the absolute worst human being in the country became President?  If you want to comfort yourself, say yes.   If you want to stare at the nasty truth, the answer is hell no.  He was destined to lead today's Republican party.  I say today's because whether or not anyone here wants to admit it, a lot of good people have left that party.

this administration.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8296923/HHS-Secretary-Alex-Azar-says-meat-workers-home-social-conditions-caused-spread-corona.html

Quote

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar dismissed concerns about the spread of the coronavirus at meat packing plants, saying workers were more likely to catch the deadly disease at home or in social situations.

Azar's remarks were made on a phone call with Democratic and Republican lawmakers and came after President Donald Trump invoked the Defense Production Act to keep meat plants open amid fears of a food shortage.

But the plants have also had high outbreaks of the coronavirus among workers - more than 10,000 have tested positive nationwide with at least 45 deaths.

Some of the lawmakers on the April 28 call with Azar told Politico he said it was the 'home and social' aspects of workers' lives rather than the conditions inside the facilities that led to people catching the disease.

Azar, a member of the White House's Coronavirus Task Force, noted many workers live in group housing, which contributed to the spread, and suggested one solution would be to send in more law enforcement officials to enforce social distancing rules.

Several people on the call interpreted his remarks as blaming the workers.

'He was essentially turning it around, blaming the victim and implying that their lifestyle was the problem,' Democratic Rep. Ann Kuster of New Hampshire told Politico. 'Their theory of the case is that they are not becoming infected in the meat processing plant, they're becoming infected because of the way they live in their home.'

An HHS spokesperson told the news website it doesn't comment on Azar's conversations with lawmakers but called it 'an inaccurate representation of Secretary's Azar's comments during the discussion.'

At least 10,000 meat industry workers have tested positive since the pandemic began, according to an analysis by USA Today and the Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting.

At least 170 plants in 29 states have had one or more workers test positive for the coronavirus. Some of those workers also have infected others, which is included in the count.

Most meat packing workers are Latino and many are illegal immigrants.

About 44 percent of meatpackers are Latino, according to the Center for Economic and Policy Research and 80 percent are undocumented or refugees, according to an analysis from The League of United Latin American Citizens.

Yeah, this is fair. Make them say no, make them explain it. That has to be at least as effective as the political calculation they're making now - basically letting Trump stumblefuck all over himself. That's mostly unavoidable, but at least show you've got the plan and the tools to lead. Then you can at least truthfully say you did your job, the senate/executive didn't come through.
