I don't think that anyone would conclude that there was zero transmission at Memorial Day events or the protests....but being that those events were outdoors, and the protests were heavily masked, the transmission from those events seems low (see the fact that the big Lake of the Ozarks gathering didn't appear to transmit any cases), versus bars, where we have numerous examples of significant spreading in packed bars.

Large groups, close together, inside, are the biggest risk factor.  Everything else is a distant second.

Oh, I sure there were plenty of cases of gonorrhea transmitted that weekend at Lake of the Ozarks.

I now agree a college football season seems unlikely.  If it were just the social distancing keeping crowds from going to the stadium, they would still play the games for television anyway.   WWE was labeled an essential business and ran shows in completely empty buildings to keep tv contracts in place that are a lot smaller than all of the college football tv money.
But how are the teams themselves not going to be Petri dishes for Covid?  We’ve seen what happens in nursing homes, prisons, aircraft carriers, cruise ships, etc. College football teams are basically the same deal.   They’re groups of 100+ guys in close contact with each other all the time, sharing gyms, sharing locker rooms, showers, bathrooms, tackling each other and sweating, bleeding and breathing on each other a few hours a day, etc.  And then even when they’re not with the team, they live in dorms and go to classes in communal buildings with thousands of other college kids.
This seems virtually impossible to not have whole teams get Covid.  Even if they don’t preemptively shut it down (which most won’t), there are going to be so many guys quarantined that I don’t know how you keep playing.
I agree with everything except the first sentence. Money is the driving force. They're going to try to play and it's going to be a fucking mess. No one involved - players, staff, fans - will feel good about it and a bunch of money will be lost.

Thanks #BradinATX for map link. Ok, we are in for a wild ride and it is going to be 100% attributable to combo of Memorial Day & Protests.

We are fucked (these are all viewed as per day/averages)

Per Day Avg: New Cases New Hospital Admits Total Hospitalized
June 1-7 60.7 12.2 90
June 8-14 121.14 20.28 110
June 15-17 148.66 22 158

Absolutely ramping like crazy in terms of: New cases, New hospital admits & total hospital beds occupied.

The unfortunate thing is prior to Memorial Day & Protests Austin was starting to have some positive momentum in how CV was "stabilizing"

New Cases: 52/Day

New Hospital Admits: 9/day

Total Hospitalized: 92/day (and trending down towards end of month)

People need to stay home, mask up if/when they do go out and just be smart.

100% attributable?  Restaurants and retail stores have led to 0 cases?  come back with some real evidence next time of where people got sick.

you are right. Keyboard hyperbole. I think the combo of re-opening and masses of crowds for MD & Protests are major contributors.

It is just frustrating as Austin seemed to be managing this pretty well and had a handle on the hospitalizations and in the course of two weeks the fucking wheels have come off.

Just annoying as we are going to have to go backwards a bit in order to wrestle this to ground again, and I don't have any faith that people will buy in and do what is necessary.

On the Travis County dashboard at the moment:

We are updating the software on the dashboard resulting in intermittent outages throughout the day. As a result of the update, the data on the dashboard will not be updated on Thursday, June 18th and will show Wednesday’s data until Friday afternoon.

We just had the biggest new case day, a substantial jump, and they decide to update the software and skip a day of reporting. Fuck heads.

I was busy af last night and couldn't dig into things, but I know our ED had an awful lot of traffic for a Wednesday night. Hospital's full, btw. Like, one or two ICU beds for ANYTHING. At least as of this morning.

Protests are not.  And I thought for sure they would be.  https://www.wsj.com/articles/recent-protests-may-not-be-covid-19-transmission-hotspots-11592498020?mod=hp_lead_pos7

Outdoors plus masks do not give rise to mass transmission.  Inside, crowded places do.

One or two beds are open, split between the two ICUs (COVID takes up about 2/3s of the total medical ICU now, oops). There are no beds on the med/surg floors.

To be clear, I’m a Republican.

im not ignoring those things, but it’s pretty clear that this thing mostly spreads indoors. I’m basing my guess on what I see locally. There were 0 protests in Port A and almost none in Corpus. Memorial Day was 3 weeks ago. It’s not driving new case numbers. However what we have seen is the start of summer and bars/restaurants/businesses operating close to normal. Draw your own conclusion. I’m pretty confident in mine.

I'd agree opening everything early is the biggest factor.  The others are a distant second.  Chicago had crazy protests...it's been over 2 weeks and not much of any flare up.

"increased testing" has become the go to phrase for anyone who's in denial, for political reasons or otherwise, about just how bad this is getting.

Yes - but it's easy to google and show them the pace of new cases is outpacing the growth in testing.  I've shut several of these people down fast.  I will say the virus isn't as deadly in the summer.  While hospitals are filling up, those getting extremely ill is lower.  We also have gotten better about treating it - the underlying knowledge that the biggest issue is your body's own immune response helps a shitload...

Isn’t seton trying to funnel all the covid to one campus or is that a false rumor

Corpus Christi is blowing the fuck up. they have reported 66 new cases in the last 3 reporting days. Total case count is at 391, so 17% of our cases since Friday. Oof.

65 new cases today. I’ve looked, and this doesn’t seem to be related to anything like a prison or meat packing deal. The re-opening is a total clusterfuck.

It was initially supposed to be Seton Main. They changed that to Brack (without telling us) when we started seeing our first cases. Recently they've started taking COVIDs at Main, though I'm not sure if they're taking ICU-level patients.

No trauma beds open anymore, so stay chill tonight, Austin!

I do cases at one of the level one trauma centers in Dallas and we have plenty of icu and medicine beds available and elective cases are probably 90% or normal but as of this past monday all the staff has begun wearing full face shields on all the floors so I’m assuming they expect an influx

Parkland is getting most of the cases here and last I heard they are not close to capacity

In some respects this is why statewide stats about available beds are not helpful. Who cares if there is an ICU bed open in Dallas or El Paso if Houston or Austin becomes a hot spot?

Governor says public schools will be open in the fall for in person classes. this seems premature at best?

https://www.texastribune.org/2020/06/18/texas-schools-reopening-fall/

Our school district sent out a survey asking all sorts of questions on our preferences going forward and if we had the resources for online school.  Not that Hot Wheels will let something like public opinion get in his way, but I answered it any way.

Same. Here are the results they sent out this morning. It’s Eanes, btw.

Regarding return to work/school questions:

28% of parents said they would send their child(ren) to return to school provided social distancing requirements are in place
26% of parents said they would send their child(ren) to school whether or not there are social distancing requirements in place
23% said they would keep their child(ren) at home and participate in remote learning
39% of educators said they would return to work provided social distancing requirements are in place
19% of educators said they would prefer to remain at home and participate in remote learning

Sort of a mixed bag.  Glad I don’t have school aged kids anymore.  My son is a college junior but pretty sure I’m not paying $30k for another online semester.

Does it really matter as long as he still gets his degree?

Also, San Antonio is blowing up this week. That’s unfortunate but not expected. I’ve seen masks worn go from virtually everyone a couple months ago to virtually no one today.

I don’t know if it matters a whole lot, but I’d almost, and he agrees, rather he try getting some work experience in instead of cramming in a 4 year computer science degree.

said it on another page. My daughter is deferring her first semester. University insists Freshmen live in dorms. In DC. Until Thanksgiving and then go home. They may do online and if that is the case she will commence. But not attending in person. I do not have to worry about tuition or fees, just room and board so would be a win in a shitty way.

Last few errands ran out here near Lake Travis have had pretty good mask wearing.  Mayor was just doing some press conference where she said that she expects mandatory mask wearing orders to come down, enforcement responsibility falls to businesses.

No way he would go if he had to live in a dorm or similar.  He just won’t do it.  And it’s an opportunity to get some life experience in without completely dropping out.  He can live at home and still do online class. The last two days he rewired the ethernet in our house and is doing the house next door next week.  Replacing the old punch block patch panels with modern shit.

Fuck yeah. My daughter is volunteering at the food bank and working on her biochem project with a lab in Northern Virginia. The fact universities are insisting on in residence for freshman smells like a money grab. My concern is I am scheduled to start traveling again in September and if the second wave hits and they close down she is stuck there.

I could see universities having higher level students in due to ongoing research, labs, etc which have lower numbers of students. But Freshman History? Do that online.

DM me, if he can do some Microsoft stuff I might have something for him.

This is just criminal.

Jesus fuck. Abbott needs to rewind this bitch a bit. Having a bunch of fatties go to Seaworld isn't going to help.
It was blatantly obvious when Abbott originally announced the plan, which included no criteria of any kind for subsequent reopening phases or a threshold to pause, that he intended to push forward no matter what. He was never going consider data. He was never going to consider public health a priority - which is tragically ironic, because a severe outbreak is much more economically harmful than containment measures.

I said it then and I'll say it now. The only thing that would cause Abbott to change course is Donald Trump changing his tune. Well, Trump's resuming rallies in arenas. We are on our own.

wasnt Bexar the first with a mandatory order yesterday requiring businesses to require masks or else be fined $1000? and the governor said 'congratulations, you solved the puzzle!' and agreed...are people (and businesses i guess) just ignoring the order??

yeah please do. it is some simple work for someone who understands what they are doing. I just hate dealing with IT unless it is this site or porn.

And just a thought. This would be a good forum for networking our college aged kids. Experience and a bit of cash is never a bad thing.

i'm honestly really torn on this...my niece will be a freshman in the Honors College at UNT, she just did her online orientation this week and is SO stoked...

but the main issue is she has GOT to get out of the house (with my sister)...long, personal story/psych issues/parental issues that i wont go into here, but it's real shit.

suffice to say we are actually all praying that she CAN go... having to stay at home and not be able to GTFO is going to be a major psychological and emotional blow that we don't know how she will handle. she's already on edge. and that's not even considering how my sister will react...

honestly, given the statistically low risk the virus poses to her demographic, it's almost scarier if UNT decides to nix on-campus this fall and she has to stay home. that might sound fucked up, but it's the situation.  fucking family 😕

push comes to shove, we could maybe look at off-campus housing in Denton, but she got scholarships, i don't know how that would work money-wise...

gotdamn shit is fucked up 😫

I hear you. I was about to get an apartment in DC to keep her off campus but that is just not realistic. The only thing I can add is the university has told her they will not take away any of her scholarship if she defers.

Rough times brother. As a parent I am still torn about what to do. You are correct, shit is all fucked up.
