Why I voted the way I did

He was right though. Voting because of a tax cut for rich people is greedy.

You may disagree, which is fine, but it was a tax cut for everyone not just the rich. So yea, I like money, and I’d like others to have money too. And I’d especially like it if the government stopped taking it from people at increasing rates to spend it on stupid shit or to give handouts.

If that makes me greedy, ok.

Trump and cornyn cost Texans millions hoping that people wouldn’t notice because it’s only a calculation buried in your tax forms as opposed to a number on every paycheck.

Careful now, you’re starting to sound a bit greedy and selfish.

I thought I might not vote for Trump and had vaguely, sort of wishy-washily built up some mental justifications and a case for not doing so over the past few weeks in anticipation of it being crisis of self, but when it came down to the actual ballot and myself staring down that barrel, I reverted back to what was comfortable and easier for me to do (both socially/culturally and politically) and I voted for Trump again.

I don't know if I have kept my integrity or if I am a coward. Probably equal parts both, ammirite?

I'll give you credit for admitting this ridiculous rationalization.  I'm not sure coward is the right word...could be but you're definitely morally-challenged.  trump is an abomination; a disgusting characterization of all that is ugly about America.  You knew  voting for him was wrong and but did it anyway; pretty pathetic.

It’s understandable if you don’t like either Biden or trump. That’s fair. But realize that voting L (or any 3rd party) in Texas is actually voting for Trump. It’s not a protest vote or that you think Jo Jorgensen should be president. It’s you helping Trump win Texas. 100%.
Think of who can help America the most? Or who will help you personally the most. Then vote either Biden or Trump.

I don’t claim to be an expert and you may very well be right. Honestly I’m not as informed as most of you on here so it’s tough to decipher. Do you have any tangible evidence that my L vote in Texas is a Trump one? My R friends/family tell me my R vote is a D vote. And vice versa for my D friends/family.

Nothing against you, but I’m skeptical of the majority of the info I’m fed (mainly the media on both sides). It’s so hard to find unbiased info that I’ve become cynical of many “facts”.

I care more about America than my own interests & I haven’t noticed my life being a whole lot different no matter who is in office (I’m 38). Only thing is I think it’s more complicated than Biden will help America the most and Trump will help me the most.

Any links or info you can provide is appreciated.

If you vote 3rd party, you ultimately help whoever wins your state, I assume Texas. That’s the fact. It’s the same as not voting.

It’s fair to vote for someone that you think helps you the most. Personally I think that helping America ultimately helps everyone. There is a reason that the stock markets always grow under democrat presidents and not republicans. Republicans administration definitely help to pump up the market but it’s not sustainable which leads to a crash. 2008-09 was all on the republican party.

No doubt there are exceptions, but on average, the effective tax rate when down for each income group for 2019 with 95% of returns in.

I'm assuming you're in Texas - I voted for Gary Johnson in 2016 knowing that I was essentially throwing my vote away, but it didn't matter because Trump was winning Texas anyway. However, in 2020, if you think Biden is the lesser of two evils and Texas is in play, how do you vote Libertarian this year?

Agreed, my comment predicating this was specific to the politics forum and not in general. It seems anything on the forum even slightly to the right is immediately pounced upon and attacked throwing out insults, far right topics and black and white party affiliation and beliefs as if everyone on the right is all in on the far right ideology.

Apparently that's just me thinking this though so I'll move along...

Or maybe he spends too much time on this board ... The hate towards anything non left is off the charts. Find me some examples going in the other direction on this board please.

Well, the right currently isn't able to articulate much of anything that is objectively supportable.  Most of the things they do attempt to articulate, like fiscal conservatism, they don't actually do.

As a person with a conservative bent that is entirely disgusted with the GOP, I occasionally come out in support of what conservatism is supposed to be and don't get hate.  I usually get discussion.

Most of the people who come on here and espouse "non-left" things and get hate are spewing talking points that have little basis in reality or are just an effort to "pwn the libs."

The irony is that the same group, in this thread one page back no less, claiming how right of center they are, and how they truly do listen to others, follow that up by saying those that have different views are greedy, selfish, bigoted, misinformed and idiots. Truly remarkable.  Sorry for my part in derailing the thread by posting my opinions and why i voted the way i did in the "Why I voted the way I did" thread.

I'm not mad about my taxes per se.  I am, however, furious that my taxes went up while government revenue went down.

What's funny about that, is that 99.9% of those who just admit they're selfish and use that as their justification will get fucked by Trump policies.  They're just too stupid to know it.

Hitler, really? So when are we invading Poland?

Also, you voting for Biden is a way bigger problem. He’s only been part of the system for 47 years. The same system you think he is going to fix.

Am I missing a few pages in history? I could've sworn Hitler gained office by playing to the masses' fear of losing their country to particular demographics, and then talking about Eugenics and racehorse theory. Sound familiar?

Also, Obama said it best when he stated that the US is like an ocean liner. It takes a long time to change course. You and I, as Black Americans, have far more ability to freely move around in this country than we did 47 years ago. So do Women. So do Gays. So do Hispanics. As a father, I like the idea that my daughter will be able to buy a house without a signature from her husband, or get her own credit cards, or has rule over her own body. All of those things, IN MY EYES, are called progress. A good politician SHOULD keep his ear to the ground, and play to the wants and desires of the people. You see 47 years of non action. I see 47 years of slow progress. Do I wish we could course correct quicker? Yes, but that's not how oceanliners work.

Yeah. I don't really fault guys like Enchubben who vote purely on taxes. I think it's a bit wrongheaded, because when you break down the numbers like I did on another thread, Biden's socialist tax hikes equate to about $1 per paycheck. And I disagree with the weight given to priorities; I'm willing to pay higher taxes if it means helping out society. Rising tide lifts all boats and all that. But everyone's situations and families and priorities are different, so even though I disagree, that kind of vote is not going to get a lot of ire out of me.

I also understand that being able to be nonchalant about it speaks to my privilege and comfort in life. If I were a woman or a person of color or LBGTQ or really anyone but a white male, I probably wouldn't feel that way. Ethical conundrum for me that I haven't quite reconciled within my moral compass. Supporting Trump, regardless of your reason, is at the very least turning a blind eye to bigotry and racism. At the same time, I don't think it makes sense to assume everyone who votes for Trump is a shitbag or a racist.

I still don't have that one quite figured out.

Yeah, my father in law paid cash for his last 4 homes. One of those was a 6000 sq ft home near Tahoe. So he is voting for his money, and being a white dude the country was built for him, so his concern for the rest of the bullshit is nil. That's a tough spot for me, because my daughter, his grandaughter, is not only Black but a type 1 diabetic at 12 years old. On one hand I get a little irritated he can be so apathetic towards social issues. On the other hand I also know my daughter stands to inherit a solid bit of money between the two of us. So I try my best to understand his thinking.

For me personally I cannot turn my back on my people simply because I made it. While I dislike the construct of our current welfare system, I will still gladly pay a higher tax rate to make sure people get what they need.

Hitler started out very unpopular and remained so for a very long time. He took a very small minority and gained power by intimidation and violence. The resistance ignored him and thought him too crazy to gain real power until it was too late.

That’s the comparison we’re drawing. No, it’s not exactly the same, don’t get hung up on that. It’s the resistance to democracy that’s concerning.

The resistance didn't ignore him, they fought nazis in the streets and yelled about the danger they posted. But they supported things like a minimum wage, so the moderates and non-fascist conservatives saw them as the real dangerous radicals and accepted the nazis as preferable to the socialists. Then the nazis killed the communists, the socialists, the Jews, the homosexuals, the disabled, and a lot of the moderates. Because the moderates were so stupid they saw people who wanted working Germans to earn a higher wage as the real danger.

He hates that the Dems support protests against police violence and supports a President that has explicitly encouraged terrorism against his political opponents.
I think we can draw some conclusions about this guy.

Explicitly supports terrorism? Huh?

I hate that the left side encourages massive protests and riots while at the same time encouraging everyone else to stay in small groups and/or not go out. All while screaming “science” like it’s some black and white thing.

At some point we have to realize almost nothing is black and white, it’s all gray. Anyways. I sort of regret my vote with each passing day

One candidate is a decent human being. One candidate is a walking, talking piece of human garbage who is a liar, a coward and a bigot.  Most election decisions aren't black and white, but this one should be for those reasons alone.  Unlike Enchubben my taxes will actually go up if Biden wins, and it will be worth every fucking penny to know that piece of shit is out of office.

There are too many reasons to count. The complete absence of reason from the incumbent President and his supporters suggests to me that simply having reason is enough to support Biden.

But I'll list them anyway.

  1. Biden is saying all the right things about uniting America. He is right dead in the center.
  2. He's not going to be a left-wing loony and he is not a socialist.
  3. He's going to listen to what the scientists say on COVID and lives will be saved as a result.
  4. He is not going to separate families at the border or throw them into concentration camps. He is not going to randomly deport people who have families here.
  5. He is going to pursue sensible foreign policy, strong against the terrorists and enemies of the state and friendly with allies we can benefit from -- the exact opposite of what Trump has done.
  6. He respects the institutions of democracy, that our families and ancestors fought and died to institute and protect.
  7. He also respects where those institutions have completely and utterly failed black Americans and how they need to change.
  8. He respects our military and, unlike Trump, understands what they fought and died for.
  9. He is not a laughingstock for our enemies.
  10. He will not tear America down the way Trump has.

All of the above apply to Kamala as well.
