the bigger question is do we need another tampon-in-president-form ala Biden or someone who actually tries to 180 this? I think we have plenty of the former, I'm not sure who the latter would be.

The whole party needs massive reform away from entrenched power.  I don’t see it happening and I tend to agree that any Obama-like candidate would mostly end up as fool’s gold in the end.  We’re clearly headed towards some form of a revolution regardless, but it could still be many decades down the road if the best leaders Dems can nominate are Bidens and Newsoms.

That's what we were told after the first four years and January 6, but yet here we are today.

Look IMA is right.  Trump is a great leader.  He leads by brute force and authoritarian means and has gotten 98% of the right to walk in line with whatever he desires.  Yes it's only 35% of the country, but that 35% is ride or die.  No one has ever solidified the 35% the way he has.  The first four years to the extent that he had grown ups that would reign in his bullshit, he ran those people off and now has a collection of yes man willing to do his personal bidding.

He has probably done more damage to our democratic institutions and norms this year than had likely been done to our country in the last 50 years.  Yet still the vast majority of the right will not do anything but exactly what he says.  That is leadership.  Mafia style leadership, but leadership nonetheless.

As a result, he has personally enriched himself and some select few that he wants immensely.  That is all he cares about.

I also can’t stand the mf’ers that resign their positions in protest. Thanks a lot for not fighting back, just gave up your position. And then there’s these idiots:

Dems need real leaders, not rich people that benefit either way.

Look, people follow leaders and  messaging that is clear, tangible and immediate.

They don’t understand the magic words or care about checking the boxes The Groups want checked. They don’t follow ideological abstraction and they don’t want to support politicians who run away from the language of class.

Cuomo talks about real stuff that matters using short words and definitive, meaning statements people understand.

he’s too damaged and too much of a New Yorker  to win a national race, but his messaging is good.

He's a piece of shit. Fuck him.

And fuck anyone who supports him at this point. His opponent is a far better human being and messenger than he can ever be. All he has going for him right now is name recognition, and liberals who can't see past their own noses and blame "The Groups" for everything that's wrong right now. You gave yourself away with that one.

Honest, totally serious question -- not a gotcha:

I don't have cable and haven't had it since 2009, so the only -- and I mean ONLY -- times I've ever actually heard him talk about stuff are from clips posted on Surly.

Could you provide a link to something as an example of what you're talking about? TIA

Sure thing. This is geared towards the audience he’s addressing (an important skill!) but is a very good interview.
I particularly like how he connects chaos in cities with the passage of the budget bill, and Democratic party being about stuff working.

Thanks. I appreciate the link and will check it out. But I'm now embarrassed to say I got his name confused with his fmr. CNN anchor brother. That said, I don't really follow what's going on in other states too well unless it makes headlines on the front page, especially when it's not discussed on Surly.

I don't know why it's not talked about more, but I'm so fucking sick and tired of NY politicians and the spotlight they get politically.

The Cuomos, Eric Adams, Chuck Schumer, Jeffries, TRUMP, Giuliani, Hillary, De Blasio, Bloomberg, etc. Fucking enough.

NYC is a wonderful and dynamic city. But can we please stop treating it like the face of the USA? It resembles none of the rest of America.  And they are really shitty at electing politicians.

I'm not so sure.

He didn't want to go to jail.
He did want to be president.
He wants to grift money.

Looks like he's getting what he wants to me.

What a weird conversation. Nothing Donald Trump does is by any definition "leadership." His fat ass puts on his orange makeup, goes on stage, rambles a bunch of nonsense, then eats McDonalds, plays golf, and ragetweets on the shitter. If you want to discuss the party and oligarchs behind him, that's a different conversation. They've been sowing this for decades, an electorate that gives zero shits about policy or governance, just hatred and bullshit. They found the perfect useful idiot to pull it off, and in that respect, yeah they succeeded. They stacked the supreme court, stacked governors' offices, took women down a serious peg, and got the word "diversity" turned into a bad word. They are the "leaders" in all of this and yeah they were effective. Ronald McDonald isn't the "leader" of the hamburger empire, he's just a clown for marketing purposes. Same fucking thing.

He leads a lot like this guy.

turnip is a skilled politician. It is questionable as to whether he is actually leading. The argument that others, Thiel for example, are setting the agenda carries weight with me.

I mean is setting cop cars on fire peaceful?

I’ve seen what I thought were Waymos on fire. I’ve seen a teen throwing rocks at police vehicles as they sped by him. I’ve seen a squad car with smashed windows, though cops were using their batons to make the holes larger, apparently (to give police the benefit of the doubt.)

But, like Stonekettle, I haven’t seen much to support the claim protestors are destroying shit.

What have I missed?

Edited to note that the Waymo destruction might well be ancillary to ICE, as I have read several posts from Los Angeleans making that claim.

the media is more than complicit at this point.

its coverage of the protests is the equivalent of ESPN refusing to show anything but SGA missing shots and turning the ball over.

NYC and Israel have a pretty unique connection. Jews first arrived in New York City in the 17th Century. It’s the largest Jewish population in one place outside of Israel, the home of American Zionism, and I think someone could make a strong argument that there would not be a Jewish nation state called Israel in Palestine without the Jewish diaspora community in New York.

He usually gets what he wants, nobody can deny that.

I will push back hard, however, that this makes him a good leader.

I think he’s using good in the sense of effective. And there’s not much of an argument to be made that he’s not effective. I mean that’s why we’re fucked

Again, “gets shit done” is not the same as being a leader.

If a company appoints a CEO who immediately fires all senior leadership and replaces them with sycophants, orders them to do a bunch of shit that benefits him personally - sometimes at the expense of the company, and causes half of the employees to revolt… I mean sure he did stuff, but nobody would say he was a good leader.

Trump is achieving his goals. Well many of them. And he has tens of millions of followers. That is effective leadership.

Yeah, demagoguery is a form of leadership, and often very effective.

He is having difficulty achieving most of his goals, particularly when it comes to policy.

If we somehow survived this as a species, future historians are going to have to document this time as the Age of Greed and Great Thoughtlessness (Period of AGGT), when a few of the worlds most wealthy decided to take over the planet and their following gave up their rights and personal freedoms in support of a more homogenous, anglo male dominated society.  Disease and starvation soon set in after they renounced clean air, water and medical treatment.

Where he’s going, there is no need for policy. Other than he gets what he wants. Whenever he wants. And fuck all the rest.

I come from Jews on my mom’s side of the family. I think it is time to stop listening to this group and let Israel sink or swim without us continually propping them up. Enough is enough. There is more than enough evidence over the last 80 years to show that the “Never Again” phrase apparently doesn’t apply to them committing atrocities against helpless civilians. Quit looking for sympathy if you are going to do the same things to others that were done to you.

Don't care what his goals are - can't really understand the man because I don't have his pathologies.

However what matters is what he is doing. He's one of the most successful presidents ever in terms of harming this country and breaking its peoples spirits.

NYPD has liaisons in Israel and not a  building or center. They have the same type of programs in about a dozen other countries worldwide including in the Middle East. They are in places where intell sharing can thwart terror and transnational crime.

There’s a subset here that uncritically regurgitates false/misleading information on anything Israel related.
