They fired his fat ass when his offense wasn't good enough. His FIL (Boren) isn't president anymore. He ain't going back there.

This.

From bathing in aggy, Buckeye, and Sooner misery, to reading reports that the defensive coordinator who holds your team together is a potential top target to replace Riley

They basically ran Venables out of town as a scapegoat -- doubt he's forgotten that. Besides, does he even want to be a HC?

Disagree. You can’t “become” a blue blood. You can be the next best thing, which is LSU, Oregon, UF, UGA. That’s pretty good company. Sorry if that hurts any Gator fans feelings, but it’s a fact.

Why would a Gator care about a Pokes fan’s take on college football hierarchy?

Kinda like Don Knott’s giving advice on being a better male porn star to John Holmes and the Hedgehog.

If Charlie had gone 10-2 his years here with 2 or 3 playoff appearances, 4 conference titles and a respectable ownage of OU during his time here, he would probably still be here.

Here's to hoping OU finds their charlie and their Herman also...  A decade or two in the desert would do that program wonders!

Man, losing to Gundy really did a number on Lincoln.

I wonder how much the move to the SEC scared him? USC is going to be infinitely easier to win at consistently than being in the SEC. It's a fabulous move for USC.

It was somewhat known he opposed the move to the SEC. I thought he would appreciate the challenge, but I guess tucking tail to the Pac 12 is more appealing.

This is the exact issue. Texas fans are viewing this from the perspective of how shitty our program has been. Lots of our fanbase would absolutely agree with letting Riley go if we were in their position. He's a very good coach but he is not a $12M/yr coach. Step out of the Texas fan perspective for a minute.

OU has gotten worse every year under him, they scored zero second half points against OSU last night to blow a conference title. In their games against decent defenses this season they scored

23 against Nebraska (2 ST points - PAT return)
16 against West Virginia
14 against Baylor
28 against Iowa State (7 defensive points)
33 against Oklahoma State (9 defensive/ST points and zero offensive points in the second half)

So in games against decent defenses their offense scored 21, 16, 14, 21, 24

Now imagine the offensive genius who put that out there was asking you to double his salary. We'd say "see ya" just like OU did.

Larry Coker was 35-3 with three conference championships and a national title in his first 3 years. To make it even in his first 5 seasons he was 53-9 with 3 conference titles, a national title, and another national title game appearance.

Riley is much better than Coker but he is below the elite tier and in a mix with several other coaches.

This second tweet is exactly what I've been saying. They've been getting steadily worse. He is not an elite championship coach, but he is certainly a very good one. Oklahoma could do worse, certainly, but they could also do better. Oklahoma has been getting steadily worse under him even while the other supposed-to-be elite program has been total crap.

First, I view you as a really good poster who I enjoy reading. If you're associated with the advancedstats.com, thank you. I enjoy that site. However, I find your opinion about Riley's head coaching tenure at OU devoid of context.

Tagging Riley for losses in 2017-2019, ignores the fact that OU averaged 37 pts in their six losses over those three years. Riley was saddled with Mike Stoops for 1.5 years. After the clownshow that was the OU defense in 2017, it was surprising to see Stoop get a second year, and I feel it's reasonable to blame him for the bad defense in all of 2018.

In 2020-2021, OU's offense has suffered from worse QB play AND much worse OL play. OU's OL recruiting based on star talent has been good (not great), but development of the unit has been poor. I'd be surprised if Riley takes Bedenbaugh with him to SC despite their long relationship (back to Texas Tech). In addition, OU hasn't really had elite RB or WR talent in the last couple of years. The Sooners have been mock here for having RB recruits poached at the 11th hour (Bama'd). WR recruiting has had boom-bust years. Mostly, it's the OL though.

Rattler had elite tools, but a terrible attitude. Same could be said of Kyle Murray, but Murray apparently worked like a beast. Rattler didn't. Caleb Williams didn't play in an elite conference in DC and lost his senior year to Covid shutdown (not complaining). His development from the Baylor to Ok St was remarkable. I think he'd have done really well next year and beyond with Riley. Who knows? He may still.

The OL + young QB issues = OU's offensive struggles this year. I, for one, was clamoring for a change in OU's OL coach this off season. Sherrone Moore (Michigan) is an excellent recruiter who played OL at OU and who's done well with the Wolverine's OL this year. He'll be a hot name in the next few years.

OU's defensive woes were starting to get sorted out. OU's defensive success in 2020 was overvalued based on the Sooners not really facing any good throwing QBs. K-St and UT were the two best and they put up 38 and 31 vs OU. FL was great, but checked out by the bowl game. The Sooner defense got credit in the stats for shutting down an elite Gator offense that didn't have most of their best players.

This year was the first that OU's improved defensive recruiting (and teaching) was starting to really pay dividends. It would've been interesting to see what happened next with more years of this group bring in and coaching up better players.

The proof's in the pudding. This would've been a pivotal offseason for Riley had he stated at OU. Would he have cut Bedenbaugh? Would he have cut Dennis Simmons (WR coach) with consecutive subpar WR years?

We'll see how his staff at SC fills out. I have a feeling he'll have a big staff (? and player) recruiting budget.

They won't fuck up the next hire. Because they don't have a bunch of rich cunts and asshole regents thinking they're all the next great coach evaluator. They have a system in place and will find an offensive leaning HC to come in and continue what they have built. The only thing that might derail them is the SEC move. No one knows how that will go until it goes

Sounds like Leach might be the perfect fit.

Riley gutting their recruiting class could cause the next guy some problems, especially if Williams bolts and/or the new coach doesn't succeed in transfers like Riley did early on.

I think it is clear Stoops left Riley a far better stocked program than Riley is leaving whoever comes in. Riley was the Big 12's Day. Born on 3rd base and people thinking they hit a triple as Harbaugh said. We'll find out how good of a coach Riley is at USC. That place is as broken culturally as Texas is currently.

Well we know it has to be something worse than caving a woman’s face in to bother OU fans. I have a feeling you’ll find a way

I fully supported Mixon getting kicked off the team and off scholarship.

Had that happened, he would've transferred to another school, sat out a year and played two.

OU made him sit out a year, gave him a zero tolerance policy, and he played two.

Stoops had a good (not perfect), track record of giving players second chances, holding them accountable, and getting growth from the player and production on the field.

Kelly seems like a terrible person to work for.

Fuck you man. We’re just here chopping up a little CFB and you act like your so fucking high and mighty and above us. You’re a fucking Florida fan. Florida the state by itself is embarrassing enough. Trying to act like you’re in the same class as those schools is fucking pathetic. Go fuck yourself.

And the answer to your first question is because I know more than you. I’m smarter than you. I’m funnier than you. I’m older than you so you could benefit from my knowledge and experience. I can give you an unbiased view of your program, which from the delusional Florida fans I know is sorely needed. But mainly because I’m 100% correct in my opinion on where Florida ranks as a program. Any more stupid fucking questions you fucking asshole?

He’s clearly not realizing that in the same day gata makes a hire, it’s completely overshadowed and blasted over by Riley to USC. Sorry, but gata is irrelevant and it’s obvious to anyone outside Gainesville

Nothing against you, but that may be the final straw for my OU fandom. Kelly's sideline behavior portends really poor behavior behind closed doors.

Well if Mixon knocking a girl unconscious didn’t sully your OU fandom I think you’ll be able to get over the hiring of Brian Kelly.

Gibbs, Schnellenberger, Blake. They can and have fucked up. Stoops was a home run, Riley was a solid hire. If they go with some someone like Huepel, it's a crapshoot.

My gut feel tells me a year or two  of Stoops as sort of Dickeater Emeritus, and they bring in a couple of promising assistants. If they like what they see, promote to HC. If not, it buys them some time where they aren't scrambling in a crowded field. Joining the cluster fuck that is the SEC at a school that expects cfp results is a tough sell when there are currently 4 slots.
